Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all religions, in the medieval West as in the East, ideas about the past, the present and the future were shaped by expectations related to the End. The volumes Cultures of Eschatology explore the many ways apocalyptic thought and visions of the end intersected with the development of pre-modern religio-political communities, with social changes and with the emergence of new intellectual and literary traditions. The two volumes present a wide variety of case studies from the early Christian communities of Antiquity, through the times of the Islamic invasion and the Crusades and up to modern receptions, from the Latin West to the Byzantine Empire, from South Yemen to the Hidden Lands of Tibetan Buddhism. Examining apocalypticism, messianism and eschatology in medieval Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist communities, the contributions paint a multi-faceted picture of End-Time scenarios and provide their readers with a broad array of source material from different historical contexts. The first volume, Empires and Scriptural Authorities, examines the formation of literary and visual apocalyptic traditions, and the role they played as vehicles for defining a community’s religious and political enemies. The second volume, Time, Death and Afterlife, focuses on key topics of eschatology: death, judgment, afterlife and the perception of time and its end. It also analyses modern readings and interpretations of eschatological concepts.

Book excerpt: Alexander's alleged Wall against Gog and Magog, often connected with the enclosure of the apocalyptic people, was a widespread theme among Syriac Christians in Mesopotamia. In the ninth century Sallam the Interpreter dictated an account of his search for the barrier to the Arab geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih. The reliability of Sallam's journey from Samarra to Western China and back (842-45), however, has always been a highly contested issue. Van Donzel and Schmidt consider the travel account as historical. This volume presents a translation of the source while at the same time it carefully looks into other Eastern Christian and Muslim traditions of the famous lore. A comprehensive survey reconstructs the political and topographical data. As so many other examples, also this story pays witness to the influence of the Syriac Christian tradition on Koran and Muslim Traditions.

Book excerpt: Jerusalem in the Qur'an made its debut at a crucial time when the morale of the Muslims was not only at its lowest... but is continually sinking... The blatant incessant Israeli incursions in the Holy Land go unabated, and Muslims are echoing the very words that their fellow brethren called out unto their Lord when they were being persecuted at the hands of the kuffar of Makkah: "When will the help of Allah come?''Shaikh Imran's insight into the events that are unfolding in the world today is a source of inspiration for Muslims for he convincingly argues from his scholarly interpretations of the Divine Writ (i.e., the Holy Qur'an) and the Ahadith of the Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu 'alaihi wa sallam) that the help of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'alah) is at hand, that the Holy Land will be liberated, and that Islam will re-emerge as the 'Ruling State' in the world. The reader will be enthralled by the author's grasp on world politics. Jerusalem in the Qur'an comes as a ray of sunshine for Muslims and is an eye-opener for the so-called 'People of the Book'. Though Jerusalem in the Qur'an is a meticulously written thesis combining religious and historical documents with recent political events and penetrating interpretations from the Qur'an and Hadith, it runs like a story. Once you begin reading it, it is hard to stop ... It is a reference that one needs to keep and re-read whenever the subject is to be researched. The book gives a detailed beautifully written exposition of these episodes with brilliant interpretations from the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah. No one would fail to appreciate his penetrative thought and his spiritual depth.

Book excerpt: GOG MAGOG: This is the English version of of my urdu book Yajuj Majuj (Fitna). I have written three books in Urdu (1) Yajuj Majuj (Fitna) (2) Yajuj Majuj (Yalghaar) (3) Qayamat (Mazhab Or Science). In Judaism, Christianity and Islam, there is a mention of a mysterious race of human beings called "Gog and Magog" (Yajuj and Majuj in Arabic). Several predictions have been made about which group of people this can be, however till date our understanding is far from being complete. I was told about the stories of Gog and Magog during my childhood by my mother and some other people. Since then, I have always been curious about their existence, their powers and why they have been specifically called out in.Gog and Magog are two nomadic and fierce nations or tribes who will attack on civilized nations near Qayyamat. From centuries Jews, Christians and Muslims are expecting Gog and Magog's (Yajuj Majuj) attack on civilized nations near the Qayamat (Doomsday). They are strange, mysterious and fierce nations who will attack on civilized nations before Qayamat (Doomsday). Their appearance and their location is mentioned in Torait (Torah), Bible and Holy Quran. I have described their location and appearance with the help of maps and pictures. For this topic help have been taken from Bible, Holy Quran and Ahadees e Nabvi (sayings of Holy prophet) and some other books and articles. In this book I have explained who are Gog Magog and what their location is. Who is Dhul Qarnayn? There is a mix opinion about Dhul Qarnayn, Some Muslim scholars thought that Dhul-Qarnayn may be Cyrus the Great instead of Alexander the Great. Some Muslim and other commentators have identified Dhul Qarnayn with Alexander the Great and some think that he was some other person. There are four persons in history who were thought to be Dhul Qarnayn. Alexander the great and Cyrus the great both have travelled in the direction of the east and the west to conquer different countries. They both have reached far east at that time and nearly the same stories and incidents are narrated about both of them that's why scholars are confused about them. Cyrus was the first person to conquer the vast land in the past and it appears that Alexander was impressed by Cyrus the great and he copied him. Alexander, which no doubt these same accounts existed in his time, himself consciously mimicked Dhul Qarnain, likewise traveling from the east to the west on a famous Journey, but he never reached the west coast of Africa and didn't go past India to the east. Cyrus was also mentioned in old Testament: "This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor." (Isaiah, 45:1)Location of The Wall:That wall was built between Derbent and Daryal, two cities of Dagistan in the Caucasus, the land that lies between the Black Sea and the Caspian. There are high mountains between the Black Sea and Daryal having deep gorges which cannot allow large armies to pass through them. Between Derbent and Dar'yal, however, there are no such mountains and the passes also are wide and passable. In ancient times savage hordes from the north invaded and ravaged southern lands through these passes and the Persian rulers who were scared of them had to build a strong wall, 50 miles long, 29 feet high and 10 feet wide, for fortification purposes, ruins of which can still be seen.Who are Gog and Magog?Muslim geographers identified them at first with Turkic tribes from Central Asia and later with the Mongols. Historically speaking, Magog was a grandson of Noah (Genesis 10:2). The descendants of Magog settled to the far north of Israel, likely in Europe and northern Asia (Ezekiel 38:2). Magog seems to be used to refer to "northern barbarians" in general, but likely also has a connection to Magog the person. The people of Magog are described as skilled warriors (Ezekiel 38:15; 39:3-9). Gog is described as "....

Book excerpt: In consequence of a mysterious decision taken by Mustafa Kamal's secular Republic of Turkey to not only change the city's name, but to also take steps that eventually ensured that the name, Constantinople, would no longer be used, this writer had to retrieve the name "Constantinople" from the museums of history in order for this book to be written. Why did the secular Turkish leader change the name of the city? Why did the name "Constantinople" have to suffer that mysterious fate? This book brings clarity to that subject. This writer is convinced that the mysterious disappearance of the name "Constantinople" from the modern-day vocabulary and discourse is directly linked to the status and role of the city in both Islamic and Christian eschatology.

Book excerpt: Praise be to Allah Most High through Whose Kindness Sūrah alKahf and the Modern Age is now published. May He bless this humblework to reach Muslims in many parts of the world. May it assist themto grow closer to the Qur'ān and to this Sūrah - especially every dayof Jum'ah when the Sūrah is to be recited for protection from theFitnah of Dajjāl. May it refresh their memory of the meaning of theSūrah and, more importantly, constantly deepen their understanding ofthe Sūrah. Amīn!As war on Islam intensifies and the time approaches when theimposter Euro-Jewish State of Israel makes its bid to become theruling State in the world, and Dajjāl the false Messiah would rule theworld from Jerusalem and declare that he is the true Messiah, I fearthat there would be many who would ban books on the Qur'ān. Itherefore pray most humbly, and ask my gentle readers to also kindlyjoin in the prayer, that Allah Most High might protect books (such asthis humble quartet of books on Sūrah al-Kahf) that employ theblessed Qur'ān to expose those in the godless modern age who arewaging unjust war on Islam and Muslims. Āmīn.A mysterious Euro-world-order with a Jewish-Christian alliancewages war on Islam on behalf of the Euro-Jewish State of Israel. Ifthere is any merit at all in this book it can, perhaps, be located in itsrole as a very humble pioneering work that might possibly inspireothers, more competent than this writer, to a more comprehensiveeffort in using this Sūrah of the Qur'ān to explain that world today.

Yet, their pervasive impact on Muslim communities and on the lives of individual Muslims remains largely unknown and rather surprising to Westerners. This book addresses this gap in understanding with a fascinating and diverse account, taking readers from premodern Islam to the present day. Dreams and visions are shown to have been, and to be, significant in a range of social, educational, and cultural roles. The book includes a wealth of examples detailing the Sufi experience. Contributors use Arabic, Persian, Indian, Central Asian, and Ottoman sources and employ approaches grounded in history, sociology, psychology, anthropology, religious studies, and literary analysis. This is an illuminating work, showing how ordinary Muslims, Muslim notables, Sufis, legal scholars, and rulers have perceived both themselves and the world around them through the prism of dreams and visions.
