Book excerpt: What did we have in mind when in May, 1976, we (Professor de Gennes, Dr. Tourand and ourselves) thought of a Summer School in the field of liquids? First, we wanted to present and discuss the new results that have been obtained recently, in particular at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble since it became operational in 1972. In order to achieve this goal, the major part of this Summer School was devoted to an ex tensive presentation of the gen~ra1 concepts and methods of study ing this state of matter (time-dependent correlation functions, molecular dynamics, intermolecular forces, spectroscopic tech niques ••• ) and concentrated on a few specific systems which have seen significant development in the last few years, both theoret ically and experimentally. These systems are the different classes of simple liquids: metallic liquids, ionic liquids, simple molecu lar liquids and the new field of superionic conductors (solid electrolytes). Furthermore, we wanted to put some emphasis on a particular research area in the field of liquids, namely critical phenomena in fluids. This was chosen both because of our personal interest in this field and the major theoretical advances which have occurred in the last ten years. We also wished that some new powerful techniques or new theo retical approaches be presented at this School. Thus, picosecond laser techniques, theoretical calculations on dipolar fluids, and angular correlations in molecular liquids were the subject of specific seminars.

Book excerpt: The behavior of molecules in condensed phases involves complex considerations to fully describe the microscopic structure and dynamics. This is particularly interesting in complex liquids with inherent heterogeneity and in binary mixtures where the competition between the interactions between similar and dissimilar species greatly affects the microstructures of the liquid. The ubiquity of aqueous binary mixtures necessitates their study, particularly because the unique properties of water often manifests anomalously in the physical properties of binary mixtures. These changes in physical properties are the result of structural changes at the molecular level. In this thesis, the dynamical results from optical heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE) experiments are reported for a series of aqueous binary mixtures. OHD-OKE is a nonresonant pump probe technique in which the bulk orientational dynamics of a liquid are measured via the time-dependent birefringence induced in the sample by an optical pulse. The OHD-OKE setup used in this thesis has the ability to measure dynamics over seven decades of time and eight decades of signal, which is an incredible window for a single experimental technique. Ultrafast pulses, which are necessary to have sufficient resolution, are generated by a Ti:Sapphire oscillator/regenerative amplifier. Multiple techniques including heterodyne detection and phase cycling are used to improve signal to noise, particularly at long time when signals are small. The theory behind OHD-OKE and a description of the experimental setup are given here. In addition to dynamical information, microstructural changes can be extracted from OHD-OKE data using the Debye Stokes Einstein (DSE) equation. The specific structures can be elucidated using complementary techniques. The remainder of the thesis is devoted to the aqueous binary mixtures of interest and the results from OHD-OKE and complementary techniques. First, a protic ionic liquid is compared to its aprotic analogue in order to better understand the role of hydrogen bonding in ionic liquids at various hydration levels. This work is further expanded to ionic liquids of varying chain lengths and anions in order to provide a deeper understanding of hydrophilicity and water saturation in ionic liquids. Finally, the anomalous phase behavior of the nicotine/water binary system is studied in order to elucidate the dynamics and microstructures associated with the lower critical solution temperature.

Book excerpt: The unique behavior of the "liquid state", together with the richness of phenomena that are observed, render liquids particularly interesting for the scientific community. Note that the most important reactions in chemical and biological systems take place in solutions and liquid-like environments. Additionally, liquids are utilized for numerous industrial applications. It is for these reasons that the understanding of their properties at the molecular level is of foremost interest in many fields of science and engineering. What can be said with certainty is that both the experimental and theoretical studies of the liquid state have a long and rich history, so that one might suppose this to be essentially a solved problem. It should be emphasized, however, that although, for more than a century, the overall scientific effort has led to a considerable progress, our understanding of the properties of the liquid systems is still incomplete and there is still more to be explored. Basic reason for this is the "many body" character of the particle interactions in liquids and the lack of long-range order, which introduce in liquid state theory and existing simulation techniques a number of conceptual and technical problems that require specific approaches. Also, many of the elementary processes that take place in liquids, including molecular translational, rotational and vibrational motions (Trans. -Rot. -Vib. coupling), structural relaxation, energy dissipation and especially chemical changes in reactive systems occur at different and/or extremely short timescales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of liquids of both natural and technological importance are known to exhibit spatial and dynamic heterogeneity at the mesoscale due to specific non-covalent intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen-bonding, coulombic interactions, or solvophobic exclusion. However, there is little understanding as to how the organization and dynamics at the mesoscale influence the physical and chemical properties of the bulk liquids. In this dissertation, two classes of materials, ionic liquids and imidazoles, are selected as case studies and investigated by a combination of experimental techniques which provide insight into the interplay of mesoscale organization, dynamics, and physicochemical properties. The mesoscale organization in these materials originates primarily from two different types of non-covalent interactions. For ionic liquids (ILs), this interaction is the solvophobic exclusion of extended aliphatic chains substituted on the cation from regions occupied by the polar ions. Here, new experimental signatures of mesoscale solvophobic aggregate dynamics are identified in the dielectric and dynamic-mechanical spectra. Using these signatures, it is found for instance, in phosphonium-based ionic liquids, that the formation of long-lived aggregates depends not only on the volume fraction of aliphatic groups, but also on the formation of a well-defined polar phase through strong coulombic interactions of the cation and anion charge centers. Finally, the ability to tune physicochemical properties, notably the static dielectric permittivity, by composition-dependent control of mesoscale aggregate morphology and dynamics in binary IL mixtures, is demonstrated. In imidazoles, the organization is driven by intermolecular hydrogen-bonds resulting in supramolecular chains of imidazole molecules. The existence of these chains is commonly believed to promote proton conductivity by a fast intermolecular proton transfer mechanism. A detailed analysis of neat 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole and mixtures with minute amounts of levulinic acid and butyramide reveal an inverse relation between the average hydrogen-bonded chain length and conductivity with no direct correlation between the static dielectric permittivity and proton conductivity. In addition, an unusual temperature dependence of static dielectric permittivity is attributed to the formation of antiparallel alignment of neighboring hydrogen-bonded chains, a degree of previously unrecognized mesoscale organization.

Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the molecular aspects of liquids and liquid-based materials such as organic or inorganic liquids, ionic liquids, proteins, biomaterials, and soft materials including gels. The reader discovers how the molecular basics of such systems are connected with their properties, dynamics, and functions. Once the use and application of liquids and liquid-based materials are understood, the book becomes a source of the latest, detailed knowledge of their structures, dynamics, and functions emerging from molecularity. The systems discussed in the book have structural dimensions varying from nanometers to millimeters, thus the precise estimation of structures and dynamics from experimental, theoretical, and simulation methods is of crucial importance. Outlines of the practical knowledge needed in research and development are helpfully included in the book.

The first is mostly limited to solutes at low concentrations, while FST has no such issue. It is an exact theory that can be applied to any stable solution regardless of the number of components and their co
