Book Synopsis Molecular Biology and Physiology of Insulin and Insulin-Like Growth Factors by : Derek LeRoith

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses a fundamental puzzle in biology and medicine, namely, how does tissue develop, repair and replace itself. The answer appears to lie in growth factors and their regulation. To thrive and survive we need growth factors and this book concentrates on two factors that are related to growth hormone. Growth hormone does not act directly on all tissues, but mediates many of its actions through the release of insulin-like growth factors from the liver. The growth factors were originally called somatomedins by McConaghey and Sledge (1), who discovered that they mediated growth-like effects of growth hormone. However, the factors were purified on the basis of their insulinomimetic actions on fat and muscle and it is their relationship to the insulin family of pep tides that now gives them their name (2,3) of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). They mediate the actions of. growth hormone on the proteoglycan synthesis of cartilage and produce mitogenic effects in fibroblast cultures.
Book Synopsis Human Growth Hormone Pharmacology by : Kathleen T. Shiverick
Download or read book Human Growth Hormone Pharmacology written by Kathleen T. Shiverick and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-03-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a wide range of basic and clinical issues in the physiology and pharmacology of growth hormone. The volume is organized like a textbook. It begins with factors contributing to GH gene expression, the functional relationships of the GH receptor, molecular biological analysis of the GH-GH receptor complex and proceeds to describe the insulin-like growth factor axis. Transgenic models are discussed for analysis of discrete effects. These discussions provide a bridge to clinically oriented discussions of growth abnormalities in GH deficient children, GH insensitivity due to deficiency of the GH receptor, and the concept of aging as a GH/IGF-I deficiency state. Discussions also include the immune system as a source and a responder to GH, GHRH, IGF-I and the effects of GH excess.
Book Synopsis Growth and Lactogenic Hormones by : L. Matera
Download or read book Growth and Lactogenic Hormones written by L. Matera and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than seventy years evidence has accumulated documenting the existence of a bi-directional communication network between growth hormone and the immune system. In the past twenty years there has been a tremendous proliferation of information detailing the workings of the growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor axis. A multitude of growth factors and binding proteins have been identified. More and more evidence supporting the important role of the growth hormone IGF network in the well functioning of the normal immune system has been documented. Clearly the challenge today is not to prove, but to understand, the neuroimmune regulatory role of GLH in its entire complexity. The ultimate goal of this volume and of all the other volumes of this series is to promote the understanding of the science and to ease human suffering.

Book Synopsis Growth Hormone II by : Barry B. Bercu
Download or read book Growth Hormone II written by Barry B. Bercu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compendium of proceedings from the Symposium on Growth Hormone II: Basic and Clinical Aspects. The intent of the sym posium was to review current aspects of the rapidly expanding science of growth hormone (GH) neuroendocrinology, especially those develop ments that occurred since our last meeting in 1985. The meeting was timely since there have been many new and exciting developments in basic research on the GH axis, and several new clinical applications for GH other than growth have been identified. For example, significant strides have been made into use of the bioengineered hormone as an anabolic in debilitated states and as an immunorestorative agent. Both these areas have received most attention as they relate to geriatric popu lations. Furthermore, recent focus on a novel family of GH secretagogues that complement the action of GHRH has shown that in animal models, these compounds have the potential to restore GH secretion in deficient or insufficient states, including growth retardation, obesity, and aging. Accordingly, these xenobiotics may have significant potential as drug products to stimulate physiological GH secretion and, thus, resist or reverse some of the maladaptive changes in form and function resulting from GH insufficiency. The importance of these agents as drug candidates is underscored by the diversity of molecules that have been studied by various pharmaceutical companies and the recent discovery that non peptide analogs with high oral bioavailability can be synthesized.
