A trading strategy of investing in assets based on their price-earnings ratio is back-tested, thus also testing the efficient market hypothesis. Market data over the past twenty-five years (1989-2014) was gathered, cleaned, and modeled to test for unexplained return to five portfolios ranked by PE ratio. The data was tested using the single-factor Capital Asset Pricing Model and the Fama-French three-factor model. The dataset was then decomposed by price and similarly modeled to test whether the effectiveness of using PE as a leading indicator is limited by the price level of an asset. I conclude that investing in a portfolio comprised of the lowest PE ratio assets yields the highest unexplained returns over the period examined. I also find that this strategy is primarily driven by low and mid-priced stocks, and does not hold at high price levels. In this analysis, the efficient market hypothesis does not hold.

Stock Investing For Canadians For Dummies, Third Edition includes information on stock investing in both bear and bull markets; unique investment segments; stock investing for different types of situations; and examples straight from the real world of stock investing as they have occurred in the past three years. With up-to-date references and resources, this book is the most reliable resource for the new stock market investor. New in this edition: Investigating how governments affect markets: The authors present an unbiased look at how government intervention can and has shaped the markets, so that investors know what to watch for and can respond appropriately to protect their investments—or even benefit Explaining economics: As governments around the world intervene in the markets, media coverage of the economic theory behind these moves (and the economic theories that deplore them) has expanded greatly—and most of it's muddled; new content in the book explains what investors need to know about economics Exploring stock trading: For readers that want to move stocks quickly rather than invest for the long run, the authors offer a crash course in the fundamentals of trading, and some critical do's and don'ts This edition also offers a brand-new part of tens focused on how investors can protect their money and spot warning signs when a good stock is about to go bad Trading For Canadians For Dummies stresses the practice of position trading, conducting technical analysis on a company and its performance, and research methods that enable the trader to strategically select both an entry and exit point before a stock is even purchased. Adapted for Canadian readers, this edition discusses the Toronto Stock Exchange, brokerage options in Canada, and how Canadians can become certified traders. With Canadian examples and resources, this is the only guide to trading tailor-made for Canadians.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of market prices is a fascinating subject for researchers. Opinions vary substantially. from the view that prices accurately and quickly reflect relevant information to the other extreme that prices are not rationally determined and are hence to some degree predictable. This diversity of belief about the efficiency of markets is reflected in these proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "A reappraisal of the efficiency of financial markets". The thirty-one workshop papers cover stock. currency and commodity markets. We are pleased to have contributions on markets in eleven NATO countries: Belgium. Canada. Denmark. France. Germany. Greece. Italy. the Netherlands. Portugal. the United Kingdom and the United States. The workshop papers thus provide a wide-ranging account of contemporary research into financial markets worldwide. The workshop was held at the Hotel do Mar. Sesimbra. Portugal from April 11 th to April 15th. 1988. We record our gratitude to Jose Cabral for ensuring the smooth progress of the workshop. The generous financial assistance of NATO was supplemented by contributions from: The Chicago Board of Trade. Alianca Seguradora. Banco Comercial Portugues. Fundacao Luso-Americana Para 0 Desenvolvimento. Junta Nacional de Investigacao Cientifica e Tecnologica. We speak for all the workshop participants in expressing our thanks to all our sponsors. Rui M. Campos Guimaraes. University of Porto.
