Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of air-powder polishing on shear bond strength in vitro for two metal bracket adhesive systems currently in use for direct orthodontic bonding procedures. Ninety-six third molar teeth with flattened enamel surfaces were randomly assigned to be bonded with metal brackets using either a two paste or a no-mix orthodontic adhesive resin. Thwelve samples in each treatment group were air-powder polished for 0, 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Each bracket adhesive bond was then tested for shear strength using the Instron Universal Testing Device. Scanning electron microscopy determined the fracture pattern of representative samples from each treatment group. Mean shear bond strength values for each treatment group were calculated and expressed in magapascals (MPa). Values from baseline to 60 seconds varied from 22.9 ± 1.9 MPa to 18.2 ± 4.1 MPa for the two paste system and from 15.5 ± 2.1 MPa to 14.6 ± 1.9 MPa for the no-mix adhesive. Differences between the adhesive systems at all air-powder polishing times were statistically significant (p d".05). Statistical analysis by a two-way ANOVA in combination with the Newman-Keuls Multiple Range Test for pairwise mean comparisons determined a differential effect of air-powder polishing on the bond strength of the two adhesive systems. After 60 seconds of air-powder polishing, results showed a significant decrease (p d".05) in the mean bond strength of the two paste adhesive resin when compared to baseline, 15, and 30 second treatments. No significant time effect of air-powder polishing was found for the no-mix adhesive system. SEM analysis of the bond failure sites showed tooth-adhesive, within adhesive and bracket-adhesive fracture patterns for the viewed samples of each adhesive type and air-powder polishing treatment time. Fractures within tooth structure were also noted for the two paste system, indicating strong enamel-adhesive-bracket bonds. Differences in the fracture pattern of the two paste 60 second air-powder polishing group may account for the differential effect of treatment. Although in vitro results showed decreased bond strength for the two paste system, use of air-powder polishing for the routine maintenance of the orthodontic patient should not affect clinical performance of this adhesive.

Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty-five Enamel specimens are prepared from disinfected bovine mandibular incisors are divided into five groups. Group I: brackets are attached on the enamel surface with the standard adhesive technique (etch + primer +bond). Group II: the brackets are attached with the Standard Orthodontic adhesive technique without etching. Group III: the enamel surface is conditioned with pure Argon Cold atmospheric plasma before the application of the primer without using an acid etchant. Group IV: the enamel surface is conditioned with the admixture of Argon Cold atmospheric plasma with 0.5 % Oxygen before the application of the primer without using acid etchant Group V: after the application of Argon Cold atmospheric plasma with 0.5 % Oxygen the surface is rewetted by deionized water before the application of the primer and adhesive. After that, the samples are exposed to thermal cycling. The shear bond strength of the samples is tested by the universal testing machine which measured the maximum force at which the brackets are deboned from the tooth surface at a speed of 1mm/minute is measured. Whether laser conditioning improves the retention of composite resins to the same degree as conventional acid-etching techniques has been the subject of several investigations.

Book excerpt: This study examined the methods of preparing the enamel surface for orthodontic bracket adhesion in overcoming pellicle and possible fluid contamination from prebonding cleaning techniques and the effect of these treatments on the enamel surface and resultant bond strength. Shear bond strength testing, Raman linear mapping, and scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate shear bond strength, depth of resin interface, and surface and cross-sectional characteristics respectively. Based on an analysis of variance (a=.05), there was a significant effect of pretreatment enamel conditioning prior to self-etching primer application on shear bond strength. This difference was found to exist solely between the pumice prophylaxis group and the 34% phosphoric acid etch group. No difference was found to exist across all groups with regards to depth of resin penetration. Scanning electron microscopy showed no significant differences in enamel surface or resin/enamel interface characteristics. Results suggest that enamel cleaning techniques prior to SEP application are unnecessary and even deleterious to bond strength and resin penetration.

Current literature on the effects of thermocycling on bond strength is equivocal. This is largely due to a lack of a universally accepted standardized technique to examine the effects of thermocycling on orthodontic bond strength. As a result, differences in testing methodology between laboratories and investigators within the same laboratory make it difficult to directly compare data from thermocycling studies. The aims of this study were (1) to show that the testing method developed at the University of Toronto is independent of the investigator; (2) to determine the effect of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to bovine enamel; (3) to determine the effect of long term storage on the mean shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to bovine enamel; (4) to examine the bond failure interface in order to determine if a relationship exists between thermocycling and the location of the cement after debonding; (5) to examine the bond failure interface in order to determine if a relationship exists between long term storage and the location of the cement after debonding.
