Twelve elementary teachers in Second and Third grade were interviewed using a semi-structured interview. The interview protocol was developed to guide participants from broader concepts regarding physical activity to more focused discussions on the use of physical activity during the school day. Data presented examines the perceptions of teachers' overall view of physical activity among children during school hours, the amount of physical activity children engaged in during school hours, the impact of physical activity on children's overall wellbeing and academic performance, and ways physical activity is used as a behavior modifier. Findings suggest that the majority of teachers believed that physical activity was important to the wellbeing of children. Obstacles to increasing physical activity among children while at school included a strict focus on academic instructional requirements that do not afford time for additional activities, the perception that physical activity is not an end-of-year test requirement for children, pressure on teachers to increase standardized test scores as a measure of their performance evaluation, and the perception that physical activity is met simply through time allocated to PE and recess. Perceptions of social and mental benefits of physical activity, as well as, perceived benefits of physical activity for increasing academic performance are discussed.

Physical Education has the potential to impact students on a spiritual level although the degree to which this occurs is difficult to determine. This study also showed that the way Physical Education is timetabled and taught can have an impact on the way students and teachers perceive this curriculum area.

Book excerpt: A recent influx of Federal, State and Local agencies have developed agendas which focus on improving the status of teaching in America's schools. Much of the thrust of the agendas has focused on developing professional development programs for educators. Teachers' stages of development literature indicate that individual's professional development needs change over time and across contexts. In this light, one model of professional development will not meet the needs of all educators. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to describe the professional development opportunities of four experienced elementary physical educators and the extent to which these experiences informed the teaching-learning process. The secondary purpose of the study was to attain the experienced teachers' perspectives on the impact of individual professional development on student learning and thirdly to identify the constraints and supports for professional development opportunities. The qualitative data collection methods included: teacher interviews, observation of teaching, collected documents, and e-mail communication with the four participants. The quantitative data included participants' responses on the Teachers' Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993) and on the Perceived Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1995). Data analysis procedures included questionnaire mean scores, constant comparative methods, and document analysis. Findings indicated that individual experiences and life cycles may have an effect on the concerns of teachers as well as the types of professional development pursue. Further, the school context and district support impacts the types of opportunities teachers explore. Specifically there is a lack of alignment between state and local professional development policies and the professional development needs of elementary physical educators. Many of the professional development "best practices" such as accommodating for individual differences, conducting development over a sustained period of time, and implementation of follow-up activities were not implemented in practice. Further, the topics of school building level professional development sessions were not relevant for the participants. Thus, mandated attendance at opportunities provided within the district did not meet the professional development needs of the participants. Few instances were found in which knowledge gained through professional development informed teaching practice. The participants described the development of a network of physical education peers who assisted with providing support and decreasing isolation.

Book excerpt: Age-related psychosocial research indicates that adults, adolescents, and children generally prefer features of younger looking faces over those of older, often having negative perceptions and connotations of aging/abilities of older people. Limited research has investigated the influence appearance on physical education teachers' effectiveness. The present studies examined the impact of a physical education teacher's apparent age on American students' learning and perceptions of the teacher. Participants were students from two elementary schools (4th-5th grade, N = 188), two middle schools (6th-8th grade, N = 273); and two high schools (9th-12th grade, N = 114). Students were randomly assigned to view one of two virtually identical films of swimming lessons taught by the same teacher. In the young-appearance lesson (YAL), the teacher was relatively youthful appearing. In the middle-aged lesson (MAL), he had been aged by a theatrical makeup artist to appear much older. Immediately following the viewing of their assigned lesson, students completed a lesson content examination and a questionnaire about their perceptions of the teacher. Inferential statistical tests for Study One indicated that elementary students who watched the YAL scored significantly higher on the content examination and perceived the teacher to be significantly more likeable, competent, and a better role model than did the students who viewed the MAL, potentially supporting either a sociological or psychological/developmental explanation for how and why students of different ages respond to and learn from differently aged physical education teachers. Inferential statistical tests for Study Two revealed that middle school students who watched the YAL learned more from the teacher and perceived the teacher more favorably (more likeable and a better role model), providing further support for a sociological explanation of how and why students of different ages respond to and learn from physical education teachers of different ages. Inferential statistical tests for Study Three indicated that high school students who watched the MAL perceived the teacher more favorably (more positive role model). Performance on the content examination was similar for both groups, supporting a psychological/developmental explanation of how and why students respond to and learn from physical education teachers of different ages.
