Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The illicit trade in art and other cultural objects now constitutes one of the most prevalent categories of international crime. Law-enforcement agencies have long recognized that documentation is critical to the protection and recovery of these objects. Standards were needed that would make it possible for information on stolen objects to move easily across electronic networks and, at the same time, that would be intelligible to law enforcement and art communities alike. Developed through the collaboration of museums, police and customs agencies, the art trade, the insurance industry, and appraisers of art and antiques, Object ID is an international standard that defines the minimal information needed to identify art, antiques, and antiquities. Introduction to Object ID summarizes the evolution of Object ID, explains its nine categories, and offers guidelines for using them. The book provides suggestions for writing descriptions of objects and includes a brief discussion of five additional categories that some institutions opt to employ. The second part of the book sets out guidelines for choosing viewpoints, selecting backgrounds, and positioning lighting when documenting cultural objects with photography. The Introduction to series acquaints professionals and students with the complex issues and technologies in the production, management, and dissemination of cultural heritage information resources.

Book excerpt: From the weekly shopping list to the Ten Commandments, our lives are shaped by lists. Whether dashed off as a quick reminder, or carefully constructed as an inventory, this humble form of documentation provides insight into its maker's personal habits and decision-making processes. This is especially true for artists, whose day-to-day acts of living and art-making overlap and inform each other. Artists' lists shed uncover a host of unbeknownst motivations, attitudes, and opinions about their work and the work of others. Lists presents almost seventy artifacts, including "to do" lists, membership lists, lists of paintings sold, lists of books to read, lists of appointments made and met, lists of supplies to get, lists of places to see, and lists of people who are "in." At times introspective, humorous, and resolute, but always revealing and engaging, Lists is a unique firsthand account of American cultural history that augments the personal biographies of some of the most celebrated and revered artists of thelast two centuries. Many of the lists are historically important, throwing a flood of light on a moment, movement, or event; others are private, providing an intimate view of an artist's personal life: Pablo Picasso itemized his recommendations for the Armory Show in 1912; architect Eero Saarinen enumerated the good qualities of the then New York Times art editor and critic Aline Bernstein, his second wife; sculptor Alexander Calder's address book reveals the whos who of the Parisian avant-garde in the early twentieth century. In the hands of their creators, these artifacts become works of art in and of themselves. Lists includes rarely seen specimens by Vito Acconci, Leo Castelli, Joseph Cornell, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, H. L. Mencken, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Richard Pousette-Dart, Robert Rauschenberg, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Andrew Wyeth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georges Seurat (1859–1891) created just six major figure paintings during his lifetime, one of which, the alluring Circus Sideshow (Parade de cirque), has remained the most challenging to interpret since it first intrigued viewers at the 1888 Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Unlike Seurat’s earlier sunlit scenes, Circus Sideshow presents a nighttime tableau depicting a parade—a street show enticing passersby to purchase tickets. With its geometrically precise composition, muted colors, and elements of abstraction, the painting stands apart as a masterpiece of Neo-Impressionism and heralds Seurat’s subsequent depictions of popular entertainments. This book, the first comprehensive study of Circus Sideshow, situates the painting in the context of nineteenth-century Paris and of the many social changes France was undergoing. Renowned art historian Richard Thomson illuminates the roles of caricature, naturalist and avant-garde painting, and circus advertising; examines Seurat’s use of contemporary aesthetic theory; and discusses how artists ranging from Rouault to Picasso mined the sideshow theme into the twentieth century. Illustrated with Seurat’s related drawings, works by other artists, and period posters and broadsides, Seurat’s Circus Sideshow delves into the history of traveling circuses and seasonal fairs in France, exploring the ongoing appeal of this traditional form of popular entertainment through the fin de siècle. Two additional essays describe the painting’s enthusiastic reception in New York upon its 1929 debut and present the results of a fresh technical examination of the canvas, making this volume the definitive resource on one of Seurat’s most captivating works.

Book excerpt: Tracing the impacts of militarism on the American landscape, through the lens of art, environmental studies, and politics Devour the Land considers how contemporary photographers have responded to the US military's impact on the domestic environment since the 1970s, a dynamic period for environmental activism as well as for photography. This catalogue presents a lively range of voices at the intersection of art, environmentalism, militarism, photography, and politics. Alongside interviews with prominent contemporary artists working in the landscape photography tradition, the images speak to photographers' varied motivations, personal experiences, and artistic approaches. The result is a surprising picture of the ways violence and warfare surround us. Although most modern combat has taken place abroad, the US domestic landscape bears the footprint of armed conflict--much of the environmental damage we live with today was caused by our own military and the expansive network of industries supporting its work. Designed to evoke a field book and to nod toward ephemera produced by earlier artists and activists, the catalogue features works by dozens of photographers, including Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Dorothy Marder, Alex Webb, Terry Evans, and many more.

Book excerpt: "Severin Roesen was a prolific painter whose impact on the American still-life tradition of the mid-to-late 1800s was far-reaching. His work is representative of the European tenets brought to the United States by himself and other German painters who fled to this country at mid-century. The quality of Roesen's work has caused him to be represented in virtually every discussion of American still-life painting, and his works are in numerous prestigious collections, both public and private." "This book outlines the known biographical information on an elusive, somewhat itinerant artist who was active in this country from 1848, when he arrived in New York City, until 1872, when he disappeared without a trace from the city of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he had been living since 1860." "Roesen's exact birthdate is unknown, but the year of his birth has been established as 1815 or 1816 through United States census records, which document his age as forty-four in 1860 while he was living in Huntington, Pennsylvania. It is likely that he is the same Severin Roesen listed as having exhibited a floral piece in Cologne in 1847." "Records of the American Art Union in New York give evidence of Roesen's participation in exhibitions and sales from 1848 until 1852, when the Union closed. City directories list his address until 1858. His wife, Wilhelmena, and three children continued to be listed in subsequent directories after the artist left." "Roesen visited a number of communities in Pennsylvania before settling in Williamsport in 1860, where he worked for twelve years--the longest period that he would work in any American city. He had many patrons in this booming lumber town, often living by the barter system. He also held classes and had both young and old students. Roesen is not listed in the 1871-72 Williamsport city directory, and the last-dated extant painting was completed in 1872. No record of his death has come to light in that community or any other where oral tradition claims he may have gone. Thus, it is only through the quality and quantity of his works that we can truly recall this artist." "Roesen's paintings of lush floral and fruit still-lifes can be analyzed in the context of the Dutch tradition, with regard to the tastes of Victorian America, and in the light of the writings of John Ruskin. His early training in Germany may have been in the decorative arts as a painter on porcelain. Evidence of this in his American works on canvas and board include his pristine rendering of detail, heightened palette, repetition of motifs, and exclusive use of still-life themes as subject matter. His ebullient and lavish compositions parallel the sentiments expressed by the grand landscapes of the concurrent Hudson River School artists, which celebrate the splendor of America's natural resources as a source of national pride." "As a teacher, both directly and indirectly, Roesen had an impact on American painters who turned to the still-life tradition in significant numbers late in the century. Of special note is the itinerant portraitist John Francis, who also worked in rural Pennsylvania and is now better known for his still lifes. A comparison of Roesen's artistic relationship to other immigrant artists such as Charles Baum and Paul Lacroix also relates to the impact of the European school on American artists." "Although this volume cannot be considered a catalogue raisonne, a checklist of more than two hundred and fifty known works by the artist is included as an invaluable reference tool."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
