Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give a quick and elementary, yet rigorous, presentation of the rudiments of the so-called theory of Viscosity Solutions which applies to fully nonlinear 1st and 2nd order Partial Differential Equations (PDE). For such equations, particularly for 2nd order ones, solutions generally are non-smooth and standard approaches in order to define a "weak solution" do not apply: classical, strong almost everywhere, weak, measure-valued and distributional solutions either do not exist or may not even be defined. The main reason for the latter failure is that, the standard idea of using "integration-by-parts" in order to pass derivatives to smooth test functions by duality, is not available for non-divergence structure PDE.

Book excerpt: This book concentrates on first boundary-value problems for fully nonlinear second-order uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations with discontinuous coefficients. We look for solutions in Sobolev classes, local or global, or for viscosity solutions. Most of the auxiliary results, such as Aleksandrov's elliptic and parabolic estimates, the Krylov–Safonov and the Evans–Krylov theorems, are taken from old sources, and the main results were obtained in the last few years. Presentation of these results is based on a generalization of the Fefferman–Stein theorem, on Fang-Hua Lin's like estimates, and on the so-called “ersatz” existence theorems, saying that one can slightly modify “any” equation and get a “cut-off” equation that has solutions with bounded derivatives. These theorems allow us to prove the solvability in Sobolev classes for equations that are quite far from the ones which are convex or concave with respect to the Hessians of the unknown functions. In studying viscosity solutions, these theorems also allow us to deal with classical approximating solutions, thus avoiding sometimes heavy constructions from the usual theory of viscosity solutions.

Book excerpt: The volume contains twelve papers dealing with the approximation of first and second order problems which arise in many fields of application including optimal control, image processing, geometrical optics and front propagation. Some contributions deal with new algorithms and technical issues related to their implementation. Other contributions are more theoretical, dealing with the convergence of approximation schemes. Many test problems have been examined to evaluate the performances of the algorithms. The volume can attract readers involved in the numerical approximation of differential models in the above-mentioned fields of applications, engineers, graduate students as well as researchers in numerical analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equations of Hamilton-Jacobi type arise in many areas of application, including the calculus of variations, control theory and differential games. However, nonlinear first order partial differential equations almost never have global classical solutions, and one must deal with generalized solutions. Recently M.G. Crandall and P.L. Lions introduced the class of viscosity solutions of these equations and proved uniqueness within this class. This paper discusses the existence of these solutions under assumptions closely related to the ones which guarantee the uniqueness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight publications produced by the project established a number of basic results in the theory of viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear differential equations of first and second order in finite and infinite dimensions. These equations arise in the dynamic programming theory of control and differential games (the finite dimensional theory for ode and the infinite dimensional theory for pde dynamics). Being fully nonlinear, the equations do not typically admit regular or classical solutions, and the appropriate notion is that of viscosity solutions. Two major advances in the first order infinite dimensional case consisted of determining the precise notion appropriate to a class of infinite dimensional problems with unbounded terms arising from the pde dynamics, and the examination of a limit case in which the value function is not a solution, but the maximal subsolution. Significant contributions to the second order theory include a new exposition of the finite dimensional theory based on results from previous funding, an infinite dimensional generalization of the foundational result used in this exposition, and the extension of the theory to second order equations in infinite dimensions with unbounded first order terms.

Book excerpt: We prove several comparison and existence theorems for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. One of them extends some recent uniqueness results by Jensen. Some establish the uniqueness of solutions for second-order Isaacs' equations and hence include the uniqueness results for Bellman equations by P.-L Lions. Our comparison results apply even for discontinuous solutions and so Perron's method readily yields the existence of continuous solutions. Reprints. (mjm).
