Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment is messy. Day-to-day, in-the-moment assessments not only reveal information that drives future instruction but also offer a comprehensive picture of students’ abilities and dispositions toward learning. As teachers, we might know what this looks and feels like, yet it can be hard to put into action—hence the messiness. Say hello to digital student portfolios—dynamic, digital collections of authentic information from different media, in many forms, and with multiple purposes. Using digital portfolios to capture student thinking and progress allows us to better see our students as readers, writers, and learners—and help students see themselves in the same way! Matt Renwick’s Digital Portfolios in the Classroom is a guide to help teachers sort through, capture, and make sense of the messiness associated with assessment. By shining a spotlight on three types of student portfolios—performance, process, and progress—and how they can be used to assess student work, Renwick helps educators navigate the maze of digital tools and implement the results to drive instruction.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a useful resource for educators who would like to begin using portfolios in the classroom. The three major types of portfolios are working portfolios (collections of work in progress), display portfolios (also called showcase or best works), and assessment portfolios. These types are distinct in theory, but tend to overlap in practice. Once the purpose of the portfolio has been determined, the steps in the portfolio development process are: (1) collection; (2) selection; (3) reflection; and (4) projection. Projection, in the portfolio process, means looking ahead and setting goals for the future. Portfolios are best used in the classroom when they are used as a stimulus for students to produce imaginative and creative work, and when students are encouraged to analyze their own progress and to produce answers to open-ended questions. There are many logistical challenges to the use of portfolios, and it is essential not to undermine their instructional benefits by using them prematurely for high-stakes assessment. Many of the assessment tasks of portfolios can be achieved through well-designed performance tasks. It is the collection and reflection aspects of portfolios that make them such a valuable assessment tool. Some practical suggestions are offered for portfolio management. Book excerpt: If you've ever sat down to confer with a child and felt at a loss for what to say or how to help move him or her forward as a writer, this book is for you. If you are a strong teacher of writing but are not seeing results from your students, this book is for you. Authors Kristin Ackerman and Jennifer McDonough have been teaching writing for several years and know that conferring can be a murky and messy process--perhaps the hardest component of all. Written from the lessons they've learned through hard-won classroom experience--their mistakes and challenges--Conferring with Young Writers is based on what Kristin and Jen call the "three Fs" frequency, focus, and follow-up. They've created a classroom management system that offers routine and structure for giving the most effective feedback in a writing conference. This book will help writing teachers--and students--learn to break down and utilize the qualities that enable good writing: elaboration, voice, structure, conventions, and focus. The authors also provide the knowledge and skills it takes to confer well, which will help you improve as a writing teacher and give your students the confidence to think of themselves as writers.

Book excerpt: "Spinning off from The Power of Protocols, David Allen, Alan Dichter, Tina Blythe, and Terra Lynch seek to bring discussion protocols to the classroom for teachers to use with their high school students. Protocols in the Classroom will use the same dependable ideas that the authors developed during more than two decades of work for multiple editions of The Power of Protocols, which has provided an invaluable resource to teachers, administrators, and teacher educators to support their professional learning and development. The authors' proposed book extends beyond professional development for educators by bringing discussion protocols into the classroom while using vignettes and facilitation tips to further explain how educators can use protocols with students effectively. Protocols in the Classroom will feature descriptions of protocols that are familiar from the earlier books (e.g., the Last Word, the Tuning Protocols, the Consultancy) and new ones. Like the earlier books, it also includes guidelines for teachers in using the protocols effectively, as well as discussion of important considerations in using protocols with students, including the role of the teacher and students' preparation for participating in discussion protocols" --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an approach for using portfolios with elementary level students and shows how the portfolio process can serve as a powerful motivational tool by encouraging students to assess their own work, set goals, and take responsibility for future learning. Throughout the book, there are stories that illuminate the lessons learned by students, teachers, and the principal at a school in Winnetka, Illinois, that has used portfolios for more than a decade. The 11 lessons provide vignettes of school life: (1) "Children Can Assess Their Own Learning"; (2) "Children Learn All the Time"; (3) "Teachers Learn All the Time, Too"; (4) "Getting Clear on Portfolio Purpose, Ownership, and Content"; (5) "Portfolios Encourage Children to Think about Their Learning"; (6) "Portfolios Respond to the Individual Needs of Students"; (7) "Designating a Space and Place for Gathering Memories"; (8) "A Celebration Connects Child, Portfolio, and Audience"; (9) "Teaching Parents How to Be Part of the Portfolio Conference"; (10) "Listening for Children's Meaning"; and (11) "Creating a Language for Portfolios." An appendix presents the philosophy of the Winnetka, Illinois, public schools. (Contains 68 references.) (SM)
