Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory of Groups of Finite Order The theory of Group-characteristics seemed to be too advanced for an introductory treatise, but I have devoted one short chapter to the subject to assist the reader in understanding Frobenius' and Burnside's recent contributions to group-theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Character theory is a powerful tool for understanding finite groups. In particular, the theory has been a key ingredient in the classification of finite simple groups. Characters are also of interest in their own right, and their properties are closely related to properties of the structure of the underlying group. The book begins by developing the module theory of complex group algebras. After the module-theoretic foundations are laid in the first chapter, the focus is primarily on characters. This enhances the accessibility of the material for students, which was a major consideration in the writing. Also with students in mind, a large number of problems are included, many of them quite challenging. In addition to the development of the basic theory (using a cleaner notation than previously), a number of more specialized topics are covered with accessible presentations. These include projective representations, the basics of the Schur index, irreducible character degrees and group structure, complex linear groups, exceptional characters, and a fairly extensive introduction to blocks and Brauer characters. This is a corrected reprint of the original 1976 version, later reprinted by Dover. Since 1976 it has become the standard reference for character theory, appearing in the bibliography of almost every research paper in the subject. It is largely self-contained, requiring of the reader only the most basic facts of linear algebra, group theory, Galois theory and ring and module theory.
Book Synopsis Finite Collineation Groups by : H. F. Blichfeldt
Download or read book Finite Collineation Groups written by H. F. Blichfeldt and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finite Collineation Groups: With an Introduction to the Theory of Groups of Operators and Substitution Groups The theory of finite collineation groups (or linear groups) as developed at present is to be found mainly in scattered articles in mathematical journals, in addition to a few texts on group theory. The author has endeavored in the present volume to give an outline of the different principles contained in these publications, and has at the same time made an effort to depend upon a minimum of abstract group theory. In this and many other respects the present volume differs from Part II of the last book cited in 24; in particular, the present volume contains more of the theory of linear groups, though the student is referred to that Part II for lists of the invariants of the binary and ternary groups. No previous knowledge of the technique of group theory is required for the reading of the opening chapter, which develops the fundamental properties of linear transformations and linear groups. For the greater convenience of the student, an introduction to the theory of groups of operators and substitution groups is given in the second chapter; moreover, certain theorems and definitions from the more advanced parts of algebra needed throughout the book arc stated in explicit form in an Appendix. The groups in two variables are determined in chap. iii by a modified form of a process due to Klein, which depends largely upon geometrical intuition. Book Synopsis The Theory of Groups by : Marshall Hall
Download or read book The Theory of Groups written by Marshall Hall and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the first truly famous book devoted primarily to finite groups was Burnside's book. From the time of its second edition in 1911 until the appearance of Hall's book, there were few books of similar stature. Hall's book is still considered to be a classic source for fundamental results on the representation theory for finite groups, the Burnside problem, extensions and cohomology of groups, p-groups and much more. For the student who has already had an introduction to group theory, there is much treasure to be found in Hall's Theory of Groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Group Theory provides a comprehensive account of the basic theory of groups. Both classic and unique topics in the field are covered, such as an historical look at how Galois viewed groups, a discussion of commutator and Sylow subgroups, and a presentation of Birkhoff’s theorem. Written in a clear and accessible style, the work presents a solid introduction for students wishing to learn more about this widely applicable subject area. This book will be suitable for graduate courses in group theory and abstract algebra, and will also have appeal to advanced undergraduates. In addition it will serve as a valuable resource for those pursuing independent study. Group Theory is a timely and fundamental addition to literature in the study of groups.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " A group is defined by means of the laws of combinations of its symbols," according to a celebrated dictum of Cayley. And this is probably still as good a one-line explanation as any. The concept of a group is surely one of the central ideas of mathematics. Certainly there are a few branches of that science in which groups are not employed implicitly or explicitly. Nor is the use of groups confined to pure mathematics. Quantum theory, molecular and atomic structure, and crystallography are just a few of the areas of science in which the idea of a group as a measure of symmetry has played an important part. The theory of groups is the oldest branch of modern algebra. Its origins are to be found in the work of Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), Paulo Ruffini (1765-1822), and Evariste Galois (1811-1832) on the theory of algebraic equations. Their groups consisted of permutations of the variables or of the roots of polynomials, and indeed for much of the nineteenth century all groups were finite permutation groups. Nevertheless many of the fundamental ideas of group theory were introduced by these early workers and their successors, Augustin Louis Cauchy (1789-1857), Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918), Camille Jordan (1838-1922) among others. The concept of an abstract group is clearly recognizable in the work of Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) but it did not really win widespread acceptance until Walther von Dyck (1856-1934) introduced presentations of groups.
