Book Synopsis The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali by : William Q. Judge
Download or read book The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali written by William Q. Judge and published by . This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Patanjali's Yoga Aphorisms is not put forth as a new translation, nor as a literal rendering into English of the original. In the year 1885 an edition was printed at Bombay by Mr. Tookeram Tatya, a Fellow of the Theosophical Society, which has been since widely circulated among its members in all parts of the world. But it has been of use only to those who had enough acquaintance with the Indian system of philosophy to enable them to grasp the real meaning of the Aphorisms notwithstanding the great and peculiar obstacles due to the numberless brackets and interpolated sentences with which not only are the Aphorisms crowded, but the so-called explanatory notes as well. For the greater number of readers these difficulties have been an almost insurmountable barrier; and such is the consideration that has led to the preparation of this edition, which attempts to clear up a work that is thought to be of great value to earnest students. It may be said by some captious critics that liberties have been taken with the text, and if this were emitted as a textual translation the charge would be true. Instead of this being a translation, it is offered as an interpretation, as the thought of Patanjali clothed in our language. No liberties have been taken with the system of the great Sage, but the endeavor has been faithfully to interpret it to Western minds unfamiliar with the Hindu modes of expression, and equally unaccustomed to their philosophy and logic.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali This edition of Patanjali's Yoga Aphorisms is not put forth as a new translation, nor as a literal rendering into English of the original. It may be said by some captious critics that liberties have been taken with the text, and if this were emitted as a textual translation the charge would be true. No liberties have been taken with the system of the great Sage, but the endeavor has been faithfully to interpret it to western minds unfamiliar with Hindu modes of expression, and equally unaccustomed to their philosophy and logic. About Patanjali's life very little, if anything, can be said. In the Rudra Jamala, the Vrihannandikeshwara and the Padma-Purana are some meagre statements, more or less legendary, relating to his birth. Book Synopsis Classical Samkhya and Yoga by : Mikel Burley
Download or read book Classical Samkhya and Yoga written by Mikel Burley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samkhya and Yoga are two of the oldest and most influential systems of classical Indian philosophy. This book provides a thorough analysis of the systems in order to fully understand Indian philosophy. Placing particular emphasis on the metaphysical schema which underlies both concepts, the author adeptly develops a new interpretation of the standard views on Samkhya and Yoga. Drawing upon existing sources and using insights from both Eastern and Western philosophy and religious practice, this comprehensive interpretation is respectful to the underlying spiritual purpose of the Indian systems. It serves to illuminate the relation between the theoretical and practical dimensions of Samkhya and Yoga. The book fills a gap in current scholarship and will be of interest to those concerned with Indology as well as philosophies in general and their similarities and differences with other traditions.

Download or read book Hindu Philosophy written by Theos Bernard and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of Hindu Philosophy is the exinction of sorrow and suffering by the method of knowledge that alone can free man from the bondage of ignorance. It points to a clear way of thinking which enables one to understand Reality by direct experience. In this perspective, Hindu Philosophy is an art of life and not a theory. In this book the author presents a precise and illuminating study of six systems of Indian Philosophy classified into three divisions (1) Nyaya-Vaisesika, (2) Samkhya-Yoga, (3) Mimamsa-Vedanta. The first division lays down the methodology of science and elaborates the concepts of Physics and Chemistry to show how manifestations of phenomena come into being. The second division sets forth and account of cosmic evolution on purely logical principles. The third division critically analyses the basic principles, developing them in greater detail and furnishing arguments to substantiate, as well as making incidental contribution on points of special interest. Beside presenting an account of philosophical systems of India, the author adds a study of Kashmir Saivism--a system of Ideal Monism founded by Vasugupta and based on Siva Sutras. In this context the author throws sufficient light on the traditional Tantric literature that has sufered wide criticism both from Western and Eastern scholars. The book is documented with Preface, Introduction and Glossarial Index.
