Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Historians A college course in English history must introduce the student to a number of great authorities on special periods and topics. It is not enough that these authorities should be casually read; they should be studied as carefully as a case - book in law, and then critically considered in the classroom. It is also necessary that all the students should do this Special reading at the time when the particular topic is reached in the text - book or lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Historians With an Introduction Any attempt to illustrate the characteristics of English historians by a series of extracts can attain at best to a very limited success. Much more than any other volume in this series it must recall the classical wiseacre who carried round a brick as a sample of the house that he had for sale. At first it seemed to me impossible to devise any thing within the limits imposed which could be of service to serious students of literature; but, upon deliberation, it seemed that something might be done by a double and to some extent parallel series of extracts, the first illustrating the aims and motives of historians, mostly by their own utterances with regard to their craft; the second exhibiting their style and method of composition by passages of some length drawn from their most important works. I have convinced myself during the progress of the book that the study of the development of historiography offers a promising and little-worked field, from which valuable results might come both for philosophy and history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the English Language The substance of the following chapters was delivered, in the form of County Council lectures, in London during the sessions 1907 - 9, and subsequently at the Summer School, St. Andrew's. It is hoped that the book will serve to introduce students of English to the somewhat neglected background of their studies. In the interest of these a certain amount of specialised material has been introduced, without, it is hoped, impairing the readableness of the book for the general public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages The period of time of which this book treats is that lying between the greatest splendor of the Roman Empire and the beginning of what may properly be called the Middle Ages. It is a period which has often been passed over lightly by historians or dismissed with a sneer as the Dark Ages of the world. And this was done in spite of the fact that perhaps the greatest historian, all things considered, who has ever written in the English language, chose just this period for his theme. It is not improbable that the very title of Gibbon's great work may have done its part toward creating a false impression of the time he describes. If one comes to our period as a time of Decline and Fall merely, one can hardly fail to carry away from the study of it a depressing sense of gloom and wretchedness. Gibbon himself, great historian as he was, did not succeed in avoiding this danger. His splendid narrative is on the whole a mournful one. We feel ourselves to be dealing with the wild movements of men, either half brutal or wholly brutalized. We see a magnificent edifice crumbling to decay, but we are not impressed with the elements of life contained in this very process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon', said Napoleon. Yet the actual writing of history, especially ancient history, is a practice that often prompts more discord than assent. In his new textbook, Luke Pitcher aims to overcome the hostility which exists between two rival camps in their study of classical historiography. The first camp looks at the classical historians with an eye to what data they can provide about the ancient world. The second camp examines the ancient writers as literary texts in their own right, employing the tools of literary criticism and engaging with such matters as narrative artistry.Attempting to fuse these two - mutually suspicious - approaches, Luke Pitcher's attractive introduction offers undergraduate students of classics the first comprehensive introduction to historiography in antiquity on the market. It unites the nitty-gritty of the historian's trade (the finding and managing of data) to an awareness of the importance of style, form, allusion and composition. The book also seeks to do justice to individual classical historians, and discusses such important figures as Livy, Tacitus, Herodotus, Cicero, Plutarch and Lucian. A comprehensive bibliography and glossary are included. "Writing Ancient History" at last does full justice to the mechanics of history-writing in the ancient world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of England and English People A history of England, given in a few hundred pages, must necessarily be a sketch. In the present volume the main purpose has been to make as prominent as possible the personal career of the chief actors in the several parts of the great drama. The work is in tended strictly as an introduction to a more continuous study of the subject 5 and the matter, it is hoped, has been so put as to awaken and call into action the reader's powers of thought and judgment. Unless these are exercised throughout, the task of reading history is of not the smallest use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Those who settled on the Atlantic coast from Maine to Florida, were Englishmen. The ancestors Of the English were those Germans who lived north Of the Elbe river in Germany, and near to the coast Of the North Sea. If we call the early English people our grandfathers, we must claim those early German people as -our great-grandfathers. From this it is evident that the Americans, the English, and the Germans are all members Of one great family, or race. This is known as the Ger manic family. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Richard Green was an English historian. He was the author of seven books although History of the English People was arguably one of his finest. Although Green began his career as a clergyman, he was always an enthusiastic student of history. Ultimately he decided to change his chosen profession, quit the clergy and became the librarian at Lembeth. Writing history was always part of his plan and he began straightaway to bringing those plans to fruition. When he undertook the project that resulted in this book, he began with the thought in mind that there were not enough published and reputable materials about the history of England. "For the conquest of Britain by the English our authorities are scant and imperfect." Therefore, he took it upon himself to complete a comprehensive and well sourced document about English history. While completed later in his life, this book (along with his last of his books), were written during a period of ill health. Due to this, his wife, Alice Stopford, helped complete his writing when he was too ill to continue. That means that some of this book is written by her hand as well which makes it an interesting exploration of England and perhaps the first one written by both a man and a woman (although she is not given author credit). Only the reader can determine if Green was truly successful in his quest to achieve a complete work (with verifiable and strong sources) about the life and history of the English People. His work stands the test of time as a monument to the life and dedication of one man, relentless in his quest to pursue his dreams and ultimately make the world a better place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Medieval Literature The recent abundance of reprints and translations marks a second approach toward the recovery of the middle age. While the previous generation of historians was dispelling the legendary darkness of this dark age, the critics turned the connotation of Gothic from pity to praise. Pity for the middle age became so antiquated that enthusiasts ven tured even to demand worship instead. What remained for our time was more exact appreciation through an increasing availability of medieval literature. To the widely interesting body of literature now at hand in English I have tried here to furnish a students' guide. This book is not for scholars. They are provided already. What seemed to be lacking was such a brief manual as Should Open the main literary signifi cances to students not specially trained. Therefore, though the discussion necessarily includes works written in Latin and Old French, and relies, of course, on foreign as well as Eng lish scholarship, the citations and the suggestions for further study are generally limited to works accessible in English. What I have thus tried to provide is, not a substitute for close study, but an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
