Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Chemistry of Radio-Active Substances In writing this book I have tried to bring before students who are interested in radio-activity tho chief facts concerning tho chemistry of radio-active substances at present known. As far as I am aware there is no book in English on this subject which is reasonably up-to-date. This book is not a monograph in the ordinary sense, and although I have taken pains to collect together the best and most recent data and views on the subject, I have made no attempt to deal with any part of it exhaustively, and I have not thought it necessary to cite authorities and references except for a few statements. A monograph very rightly, I think, should give chapter and verse for every statement of importance, but a book like this one, which does not pretend to do more than give a short account of a large subject, need not. Below are given a list of books which I recommend as primary sources of information on radio-activity and cognate subjects, and from them, merely by consulting their indexes, a reader may speedily be put on the track of tho original papers dealing with any matter on which he requires further information. I wish to express here my indebtedness to the writers of these books in the task of compiling my own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radioactivity and Radioactive Substances: An Introduction to the Study of Radioactive Substances and Their Radiations I have read with pleasure this little book of my friend Dr. J. Chadwick. It is a clear and accurate account of radioactive phenomena written by one who has a first-hand knowledge of the facts. For the beginner, the treatment of the subject gains in clearness by using, as the author has done, the modern conceptions of atomic structure and by disregard of the historical order of discovery. To all those who are interested in the development of our knowledge of this fascinating subject I can strongly recommend this book as a simple, concise, and accurate statement of the main facts and theories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Radio-Elements Radioactivity has introduced into the science of chemistry a new conception. The radioactive elements are radio active because they are in progress of spontaneous change. The chemistry of the radio-elements is concerned largely with the nature of the products of these changes, their isolation and separate identification. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radioactive Substances: Their Properties and Behaviour The discovery of these radioactive sub stances was due to the fact that they emit radiations having certain peculiar properties, one of the most remarkable of which is to render gases through which they pass feeble conductors of electricity. It will therefore be necessary, before proceeding to a study of the phenomena of radio-activity, to study some of the most important facts connected with the conduction of electricity through gases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unrivaled text in the field of celestial mechanics, Moulton's theoretical work on the prediction and interpretation of celestial phenomena has not been superseded. By providing a general account of all parts of celestial mechanics without an over-full treatment of any single aspect, by stating all the problems in advance, and, where the transformations are long, giving an outline of the steps which must be made, and by noting all the places where assumptions have been introduced or unjustified methods employed, Moulton has insured that his work will be valuable to all who are interested in the subject. The text is divided into ten chapters which progress logically in terms of the difficulty of their subject matter. They are: Fundamental Principles and Definitions, Rectilinear Motion, Central Forces, The Potential and Attractions of Bodies, The Problem of Two Bodies, The Determination of Orbits, The General Integrals of the Problem of n Bodies, The Problem of Three Bodies, Perturbations ? Geometrical Considerations, and Perturbations ? Analytical Method. Important topics cove red include general equations, motion of falling particles, the heat of the sun, simultaneous differential equations, examples where J is a function of the coordinates alone, the universality of Newton's law, determination of the orbit from the law of force, attractions of simple solids, potential and attractions of simple bodies and ellipsoids, Ivory's method and level surfaces, elements of orbits, expansions and positions in orbits, transformations of coordinates, the Laplacian and Gaussian methods of determining orbits, motion of center of mass and area integrals, motion of the infinitesimal body, surfaces of zero relative velocity, effects of the components of the disturbing force, lunar theory, method of computing perturbations, and the perturbative function. Each chapter is followed by a historical sketch and bibliography pertaining to that subject. Over 200 problems appear at key points in the text, many of them answered.
