One of our biggest successes was in the ever-expanding set of didactic lecture notes and radiologic, gross, microscopic, ultrastructural, and other images that course participants received, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when we were approached by the publisher to consider creating an updated compilation of some of the best talks and packaging them in a monograph available to a broader population of physicians and scientists. With the extraordinary attention to detail that he is known for, my co-editor David Chhieng has been both the brains and the brawn of this project, resulting in the bringing together of such a collection while trying to be sensitive and representative of the various branches of pathology reflected in the actual course. From surgical pathology, chapters cover select topics in endocrine, gynecologic, GU, and GI pathology with contributions from Walter Bell, Michael Conner, Katrin Klemm, and Audrey Lazenby, respectively. Tom Winokur has begun to prepare us for the near future with a treatise on molecular markers in breast cancer. The interactive nature of cytopathology and surgical pathology are brought together by Claudia Castro [now at the U. T. Medical Branch at Galveston] and David Chhieng in three chapters covering mediastinal, pleural, and pulmonary pathology.

Book excerpt: in the human visceral pleura is the sole reliable criterion for the statement that it belongs to the ‘thick type’, while all observed animals have a ‘thin’ type VP. The mesothelium and underlying structures of the SM represent a highly permeable bidirectional membrane with signi?cant differences in the organ and region tra- port as a local phenomenon after horseradish peroxidase application. Stomata are constant features seen by SEM, but are occasional ?ndings observed by TEM over both sides of the diaphragm, lower intercostal spaces, anterior abdominal wall and greater omentum in untreated animals. Our data extend the location of stomata over the liver and broad ligament of the uterus. We strictly de?ned and nominated the main structures of the lymphatic regions as lymphatic units, stomata, and LL. Several different types of vascularization of omental and extraomental (medias- nal pleura and lesser pelvis) MS are observed after India ink application. Human and animal differences in their location, mesothelial covering, the vessel (blood and lymphatic) supply, free and connective tissue cells and their arrangement are discussed. The mesothelium and the BL changes start early in the gestation and continue throughout the postnatal period. Both cell types (?at and cubic) are already evident through prenatal life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-pathologists, such as toxicologists and study personnel, can find it difficult to understand the data they receive from pathologists. Toxicological pathologists write long, detailed and highly technical reports. Study personnel are under daily pressure to decide whether lesions described in pathology reports are treatment-related and thus important to the pharmaceutical company or whether the lesions are background changes and thus of little significance. Written by experienced toxicological pathologists, Pathology for Toxicologists: Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Pathology for Study Personnel serves to bridge the gap in the understanding of pathology data, enabling non-pathologists to more easily comprehend pathology reports, better integrate pathology data into final study reports and ask pathologists relevant questions about the test compound. This succinct, fully referenced, full colour book is suitable for toxicologists at all stages of their training or career who want to know more about the pathology encountered in laboratory animals used in safety studies. Key features include important chapters on spontaneous and target organ lesions in rats, mice, non-human primates, mini pigs, rabbits and beagle dogs as well as information on general pathology, macroscopic target organ lesions, ancillary pathology techniques, haematology, biochemistry and adversity. Pathology for Toxicologists: Principles and Practices of Laboratory Animal Pathology for Study Personnel includes: Colour diagrams explaining how lesions are caused by either external compounds or spontaneously The anatomic variations and background lesions of laboratory animals Advice on sampling tissues, necropsy, ancillary pathology techniques and recording data A chapter on the haematology and biochemistry of laboratory animals Full colour photographs of common macroscopic lesions encountered in laboratory animals A comprehensive glossary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of Experimental Pathology, Volume 30, is organized around the theme of renal disease. The choice of renal disease reflects both the author’s personal interest and the realization that there is a need for such a collection of reviews in this area. There are many new books on renal pathology, but almost all have a clinical rather than experimental orientation. The book opens with a chapter on the pathogenesis of experimentally induced renal papillary necrosis and upper urothelial carcinoma. Subsequent chapters deal with the use of cell cultures in the study of renal diseases; mechanisms of cyclosporine nephrotoxicity in humans and animal systems; spontaneously occurring renal diseases in laboratory animals; and the use of video microscopy to define the reactivity of the renal microvasculature and the hydraulic permeability of the glomerular capillaries. This book will be of interest to a diverse group of readers interested in renal disease. This broad spectrum of potential readership is reflected in the list of contributors which includes, in addition to pathologists, nephrologists, anatomists, veterinarians, and experimental chemists. This volume will also be of interest to transplant surgeons and to pediatricians specializing in renal disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acute inflammatory response is the body's first system of alarm signals that are directed toward containment and elimination of microbial invaders. Uncontrolled inflammation has emerged as a pathophysiologic basis for many widely occurring diseases in the general population that were not initially known to be linked to the inflammatory response, including cardiovascular disease, asthma, arthritis, and cancer. To better manage treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of these wide-ranging diseases, multidisciplinary research efforts are underway in both academic and industry settings. This book provides an introduction to the cell types, chemical mediators, and general mechanisms of the host's first response to invasion. World-class experts from institutions around the world have written chapters for this introductory text. The text is presented as an introductory springboard for graduate students, medical scientists, and researchers from other disciplines wishing to gain an appreciation and working knowledge of current cellular and molecular mechanisms fundamental to inflammation.

The book illustrates how pathologists harness their understanding of these entities to develop new diagnostics and treatments for various human diseases. This new edition offers pathology, genetics residents, and molecular pathology fellows an advanced understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that goes beyond what they learned in medical and graduate school. By bridging molecular concepts of pathogenesis to the clinical expression of disease in cell, tissue and organ, this fully updated, introductory reference provides the background necessary for an understanding of today’s advances in pathology and medicine. Explains the practice of "molecular medicine" and the translational aspects of molecular pathology, including molecular diagnostics, molecular assessment and personalized medicine Orients non-pathologists on what pathologists look for and how they interpret their observational findings based on histopathology Provides the reader with what is missing from most targeted introductions to pathology—the cell biology behind pathophysiology
