Book excerpt: Chemical Microbiology: An Introduction to Microbial Physiology, Third Edition covers aspects of the chemical activities of microorganisms. The book describes the molecular architecture of microorganisms, the methods used in studying this molecular architecture; and the ways by which microorganisms can respond to and modify their environment. The text also discusses the various environmental factors that influence microbial activity. The book tackles the principles, the strategies employed, and the methods used in the studies of microbial metabolism. The transport of compounds into and out of microorganisms by the solute-transport processes and endocytosis; the principles of bioenergetics and biosynthesis; and the regulation of metabolism are also considered. The book tackles as well the growth, survival and differentiation of microorganisms. Biologists, microbiologists, chemical microbiologists, geneticists, and biochemists will find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Bacteriological and Enzyme Chemistry The subject of bacteriological and enzyme chemistry is becoming year by year of increasing importance. A knowledge of it is now necessary for the scientific conduct of many industrial processes of great magnitude. Apart from its well-known applications in the fermentation industries, a scientific understanding of this branch of chemistry is likely to exercise considerable influence upon the future development of agriculture. Recent advances in sanitation, especially the provision of pure water, and the inoffensive disposal of sewage, call for the co-operation of the engineer and the biological chemist. The Institute of Chemistry has recognised these requirements in the special examination in biological chemistry, which it has conducted for a number of years past. The author's students have frequently asked him to recommend an elementary book, which should serve as an introduction to the somewhat overwhelming literature of the subject. The difficulty of pointing to any one work which satisfied these requirements led the author to attempt himself to supply the deficiency. In writing the book he has had in mind, not only the purely chemical student, but also members of other professions, with whom he has frequent occasion to co-operate, notably the engineer and medical officer of health, as well as the general reader, to whom the subject offers many attractions. Book excerpt: "Microbiology covers the scope and sequence requirements for a single-semester microbiology course for non-majors. The book presents the core concepts of microbiology with a focus on applications for careers in allied health. The pedagogical features of the text make the material interesting and accessible while maintaining the career-application focus and scientific rigor inherent in the subject matter. Microbiology's art program enhances students' understanding of concepts through clear and effective illustrations, diagrams, and photographs. Microbiology is produced through a collaborative publishing agreement between OpenStax and the American Society for Microbiology Press. The book aligns with the curriculum guidelines of the American Society for Microbiology."--BC Campus website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial physiology, biochemistry, and genetics allowed the formulation of concepts that turned out to be important in the study of higher organisms. In the first section, the principles of bacterial growth are given, as well as the description of the different layers that enclose the bacterial cytoplasm, and their role in obtaining nutrients from the outside media through different permeability mechanism described in detail. A chapter is devoted to allostery and is indispensable for the comprehension of many regulatory mechanisms described throughout the book. Another section analyses the mechanisms by which cells obtain the energy necessary for their growth, glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, the tricarboxylic and the anaplerotic cycles. Two chapters are devoted to classes of microorganisms rarely dealt with in textbooks, namely the Archaea, mainly the methanogenic bacteria, and the methylotrophs. Eight chapters describe the principles of the regulations at the transcriptional level, with the necessary knowledge of the machineries of transcription and translation. The next fifteen chapters deal with the biosynthesis of the cell building blocks, amino acids, purine and pyrimidine nucleotides and deoxynucleotides, water-soluble vitamins and coenzymes, isoprene and tetrapyrrole derivatives and vitamin B12. The two last chapters are devoted to the study of protein-DNA interactions and to the evolution of biosynthetic pathways. The considerable advances made in the last thirty years in the field by the introduction of gene cloning and sequencing and by the exponential development of physical methods such as X-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance have helped presenting metabolism under a multidisciplinary attractive angle. The level of readership presupposes some knowledge of chemistry and genetics at the undergraduate level. The target group is graduate students, researchers in Academia and industry.
