Book Synopsis Housing Markets and Housing Institutions: An International Comparison by : Björn Hårsman
Download or read book Housing Markets and Housing Institutions: An International Comparison written by Björn Hårsman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-06-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to make international comparisons of economic institutions and government policies due to regional characteristics of the local environment. This is particularly true in comparative analysis of housing and the operation of housing markets. This book overcomes such difficulties by focusing on single cities or metropolitan areas within national systems. The countries selected include Austria, Finland, the Netherlands, Hungary, Sweden, the U.K. and the U.S.; the metropolitan areas that form the base of the analyses include Vienna, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Budapest, Stockholm, Glasgow, and San Francisco. Each article, written by a group of economists and economic geographers based in a university in a particular city, presents a description and analysis of a national housing market and an analysis of the development of housing policy and outcomes in a particular metropolitan area. The articles also include a detailed review of the spatial development of the major city, the operation ofthe housing market and the pattern of housing occupancy, and the principal institutions that affect the production and distribution of housing.
Book Synopsis International Productivity and Competitiveness by : Bert G. Hickman
Download or read book International Productivity and Competitiveness written by Bert G. Hickman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-03-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking volume conveys the "state of the art" of contemporary research on productivity growth and international competitiveness--arguably the most important problems facing contemporary economics. Adopting a worldwide perspective that features comparative analyses of both industrialized and developing countries, the book assembles papers from an international roster of leading scholars who cover a wide range of complementary topics and approaches. A number of the papers attempt to increase the clarity of thinking about "competitiveness" by developing formal definitions of the concept and relating it to more conventional economics concepts such as productivity. Some provide a macroeconomic perspective whereas others compare cross-sections of individual industries across countries or analyze the efficacy of industrial policies to promote competitiveness. Among the common themes, which are highlighted in the editor's overview chapter, are the measurement of labor and total factor productivity, accounting for the sources of productivity growth, the use of purchasing power parity indexes in international comparisons of productivity levels, the worldwide productivity slowdown, the extent of productivity convergence among developed economies, the primacy of exchange rate fluctuations in short-term movements of competitiveness since the early 1970's, and the causes of the apparent loss of U.S. competitiveness during the 1980's.

Book Synopsis The Human Capital Index 2020 Update by : World Bank
Download or read book The Human Capital Index 2020 Update written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human capital—the knowledge, skills, and health that people accumulate over their lives—is a central driver of sustainable growth, poverty reduction, and successful societies. More human capital is associated with higher earnings for people, higher income for countries, and stronger cohesion in societies. Much of the hard-won human capital gains in many economies over the past decade is at risk of being eroded by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Urgent action is needed to protect these advances, particularly among the poor and vulnerable. Designing the needed interventions, targeting them to achieve the highest effectiveness, and navigating difficult trade-offs make investing in better measurement of human capital now more important than ever. The Human Capital Index (HCI)—launched in 2018 as part of the Human Capital Project—is an international metric that benchmarks the key components of human capital across economies. The HCI is a global effort to accelerate progress toward a world where all children can achieve their full potential. Measuring the human capital that children born today can expect to attain by their 18th birthdays, the HCI highlights how current health and education outcomes shape the productivity of the next generation of workers and underscores the importance of government and societal investments in human capital. The Human Capital Index 2020 Update: Human Capital in the Time of COVID-19 presents the first update of the HCI, using health and education data available as of March 2020. It documents new evidence on trends, examples of successes, and analytical work on the utilization of human capital. The new data—collected before the global onset of COVID-19—can act as a baseline to track its effects on health and education outcomes. The report highlights how better measurement is essential for policy makers to design effective interventions and target support. In the immediate term, investments in better measurement and data use will guide pandemic containment strategies and support for those who are most affected. In the medium term, better curation and use of administrative, survey, and identification data can guide policy choices in an environment of limited fiscal space and competing priorities. In the longer term, the hope is that economies will be able to do more than simply recover lost ground. Ambitious, evidence-driven policy measures in health, education, and social protection can pave the way for today’s children to surpass the human capital achievements and quality of life of the generations that preceded them.
