Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fusion Mathematics: A Correlation and Unification of Intermediate Algebra and Plane Trigonometry The achievement of the educational Objectives that should be realized by the study Of mathematics necessitates a textbook that: (1) is written to the student; (2) consciously aims to develop in the student those qualities and attitudes that will better fit him for life in the modern world; (3) embodies a clear understanding Of the varying needs, interests, and mental capacities Of the student. With a clear understanding Of these considerations and their educational implications, this book was prepared. This book is written to the student. It is self-teaching. Each new concept is developed by statements and questions to be completed by the student. This leads him through his own activity to the disco-very Of new meanings. Afterwards he is presented with a simple, clear, and accurate statement Of the results Of his investigation and thinking. Finally, illustrative examples fully worked out clear up any remaining difficulty. The motivation-that introduces each new idea is planned to arouse the interest Of the student and to show him his need for further study. Furthermore, each topic, as far as possible, is introduced when the work of the preceding topic makes it seem worth while to the student. For example, the binomial theorem is developed after he has raised several binomials to powers and has felt the need for a shorter and a general method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Algebra IN most high schools the course in Elementary Algebra is finished by the end of the second year. By the senior year, most students have forgotten many of the principles, and a thorough review is necessary in order to prepare college candi dates for the entrance examinations and for effective work in the freshman year in college. Recognizing this need, many schools are devoting at least two periods a week for part of the senior year to a review of algebra. For such a review the regular textbook is inadequate. From an embarrassment of riches the teacher finds it laborious to select the proper examples, while the student wastes time in searching for scattered assignments. The object of this book is to conserve the time and effort of both teacher and student, by providing a thorough and effective review that can readily be completed, if need be, in two periods a week for a half year. Each student is expected to use his regular textbook in algebra for reference, as he would use a dictionary, to recall a definition, a rule, or a process that he has forgotten. He should be encouraged to think his way out wherever possible, however, and to refer to the textbook only when forced to do so as a last resort. The definitions given in the General Outline should be reviewed as occasion arises for their use. The whole Outline can be profitably employed for rapid class reviews, by covering the part of the Outline that indicates the answer, the method, the example, or the formula, as the case may be. The whole scheme of the book is ordinarily to have a page of problems represent a day's work. This, of course, does not apply to the Outlines or the few pages of theory, which can be covered more rapidly. By this plan, making only a part of the omissions indicated in the next paragraph, the essentials of the algebra can be readily covered, if need be, in from thirty to thirty-two lessons, thus leaving time for tests, even if only eighteen weeks, of two periods each, are allotted to the course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermediate Arithmetic His work has been prepared to meet a demand for a book that contains, within brief compass, an elementary course in arithmetic. It is also designed to be an introduction to the more thorough and exhaustive treatment of the science which is given in the author's standard arithmetic. The first part of the book contains exercises arranged in such a manner that they secure an easy and natural development of the ideas of numbers, and they afford sufficient practice to fix the results in memory. Ready knowledge of results can be secured only by frequent repetition and thorough drill, and the lessons that have been prepared are believed to be admirably adapted to produce expertness in computing, without sacrificing interest in the subject through constant practice with abstract numbers. When the more systematic treatment of the science is presented, the pupil is led by natural, progressive, and logical steps to an understanding of the definitions, principles, processes, and rules, before he is required to state them; consequently, all definitions, principles, and rules are but the expressions of what he already knows. It is evident, therefore, that the plan pursued in the work will develop in the student the habit of investigating for himself any subject which may claim his attention, and this is an extremely important part of proper teaching. Book excerpt: A best-selling text for developmental intermediate algebra courses, Intermediate Algebra, Sixth Edition, provides mathematically sound and comprehensive coverage of the topics considered essential in a basic college math course. The Aufmann Interactive Method ensures that students master concepts by actively practicing them as they are introduced. This approach is ideal for traditional and returning students in both classroom and distance-learning environments. The Sixth Edition features expanded and enhanced coverage of functions, with mapping of functions and illustrations of function machines. New graphing exercises also prompt critical thinking. Discussion of solutions of systems of equations in Chapter 4 has been expanded and enhanced to promote greater understanding of dependent, inconsistent, and independent systems of equations. Simplification of radical expressions now features perfect powers rather than prime factorization. New concept-based writing exercises encourage students to verbalize—and understand—concepts and new developmental exercises in many exercise sets further reinforce concepts and skills. Eduspace is Houghton Mifflin's online learning tool. Powered by Blackboard, Eduspace is a customizable, powerful and interactive platform that provides instructors with text-specific online courses and content. The Aufmann/Barker/Lockwood Intermediate Algebra course features even-numbered questions from the book and test bank content in question pools.
