New classes of students enter the training program at regular interval. Students endured rigorous academic, simulator, and aircraft training throughout the program. Squadron schedulers ensure the multiple classes and students are scheduled for the activities. Simulator and aircraft training are scheduled individual for each student. Academic training are taught to the class. Aircraft utilization must also be considered. Aircraft Sortie training are also constrained by daylight hours. Additionally, students are limited to a maximum of three training events in a given day. Squadron schedulers must balance these requirements to ensure students meet their training requirements and successfully graduate. The dynamic training environment requires advanced robust schedules with flexibility to accommodate changes. A Visual Interactive Modeling approach is used to generate schedules. Current schedules are being generated manually with an Excel spreadsheet. Taking advantage of Excel's Visual Basic Programming language, the Excel tool is modified in several ways. Scheduling Dispatch rules are implemented to automatically generate feasible schedules. Graphical User Interfaces are used to create a user-friendly environment. Schedulers guide the schedule building process to produce a robust schedule. An attrition environment is created to simulate attrition probabilities of aircraft sortie training due to operations, maintenance, weather, and other cancellations. Analysis of dispatch rules are analyzed.

Book excerpt: Scheduling of flights for a flight training squadron involves the coordination of time and resources in a dynamic environment. The generation of a daily flight schedule (DFS) requires the proper coordination of resources within established time windows, This research provides a decision support tool to assist in the generation of the DFS. Three different priority rules are investigated for determining an initial ordering of flights and a shifting bottleneck heuristic is used to establish a candidate DFS. A user interface allows a scheduler to interact with the decision support tool during the DFS generation process. Furthermore, the decision support tool provides the capability to produce a weekly schedule for short-term planning purposes as well as the entire flight training program schedule for long- term planning purposes.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research effort was to trace the evolution of a decision support system for a fighter training unit scheduler. The purpose of a Decision Support System (DSS) is to assist the cognitive processes of judgment and choice as performed by a squadron scheduler. This DSS was built using the adaptive design process. The adaptive design process includes development of a concept map analysis of tasks and data, and identification of the kernel to select the central decision process. The designers employ this central decision process to develop a feature chart and storyboards, the starting point for the DSS construction. Ideally, the DSS begins with a small prototype that decision makers use and evaluate. Builders then customize and modify the DSS as a result of user feedback. This process repeats, incorporating user needs and requirements. Thus, the DSS improves with each successive iteration. This particular DSS automates the squadron scheduling decision process without interrupting the schedulers ability to concentrate on the task at hand. This DSS interfaces with an automated wing procedure. The procedure currently used at Holloman AFB supplies each fighter squadron with daily flying information on a computer disk. This DSS processes the data residing on the disk and automatically displays the scheduling framework, eliminating the need for grease boards. The DSS database tracks the availability of personnel, thus replacing two more scheduling grease boards. Elimination of the grease boards frees the scheduler from the time-consuming process of manually updating them. As a result of this DSS, more quality flying training will be accomplished. (Theses).

This book was released on 1989 with total page 1298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book Synopsis Decision Support Systems: An Approach to Aircraft Maintenance Scheduling in the Strategic Air Command by : Stephen B. Hackett

This book was released on 1982 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining increasingly complex Air Force weapon systems requires optimum use of all available resources. Timely and accurate resource coordination is vital to ensure continuous mission capability; any improvement in coordination can produce an increase in readiness. Essential to such resource coordination is the aircraft maintenance scheduling function at the unit level. It is hypothesized that the application of computer technology to the maintenance scheduling decision process could result in improved maintenance resource allocation. A promising tool for computer-aided scheduling exists; Decision Support Systems (DSS) are intended to combine the information storage and assimilation powers of the computer with the experienced judgement of the manager to produce more effective decisions. The first requirement of a DSS is to model the current decision process; this research effort has generated a maintenance scheduling model of a SAC wing-level organization. The architecture of the model is based on Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) technology, specifically incorporating the structure explained in the ICAM Definition (IDEFO) Function Modeling Manual.
Book Synopsis Interactive Dynamic Aircraft Scheduling and Fleet Routing with the Out-of-kilter Algorithm by : Jan van Cotthem
Download or read book Interactive Dynamic Aircraft Scheduling and Fleet Routing with the Out-of-kilter Algorithm written by Jan van Cotthem and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decision support system is introduced that automates dynamic aircraft scheduling and fleet routing. Interactive graphics-based schedule construction and modification tools automate the dynamic scheduling of aircraft of a single-type aircraft fleet and the out-of-kilter algorithm is employed to automate their routing. With the out-of-kilter algorithm, either the minimum fleet size required to serve a complete schedule or the routes that aircraft of a fleet of fixed size should serve in order to maximize fleet income can be determined. Since many scheduling scenarios can be easily constructed and evaluated, fleet routing solutions that achieve planning goals, while satisfying organizational constraints, can be quickly obtained. As a result, significant improvements in aircraft scheduling and fleet routing productivity and quality are possible.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
