Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Holmes O. Paulding was the only medical officer with Colonel John Gibbon's Montana Column during the fateful summer of 1876 on the way to the Little Bighorn. Fort Lincoln had been Paulding's first post and he considered many of the officers of General George Custer's 7th Cavalry to be close friends. Two days after Custer's death, the young surgeon was with the relief column that found five companies of dead 7th Cavalry troopers. But before that awful event, Paulding wrote in his diary of the cold, the heat, the boredom, as well as the laughter, drinking, hunting, and singing on the trail along the Yellowstone River from Fort Ellis to the Little Bighorn. In a fascinating glimpse of frontier soldier life, you'll find details of men and events that you haven't read in other accounts of Custer's last summer. The deaths of two soldiers and a civilian from Gibbon's column at the hands of Sioux warriors is usually a footnote in other Little Bighorn books. Paulding was detailed to retrieve the bodies and he wrote the notes of his examination of their wounds in his diary. Only 23-years-old, Dr. Paulding had opinions about nearly everything. In particular, he had nothing good to say about his commanding officer and the way his campaign was conducted. This is a new and important contribution to the Custer literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Lukas and other leading filmmakers acknowledge their indebtedness to mythographic scholarship on archetypes. In his new study, author Rodney Farnsworth identifies a pattern of filmmakers' obsessions with archetypical rituals centered on sacrifice and the family in films made between 1977 and 1983, a period of political upheaval on both sides of the Atlantic. Combining a strong historical reading of the films in a sociopolitical context and utilizing Queer Theory as a framework for his arguments, Farnsworth offers a close examination of key films of the period, including works by Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, and Francis Ford Coppola, and provides a fascinating and timely glimpse of an important political and cinematic time. Marking the end of a more liberal era, the late seventies and early eighties witnessed the growth of reactionary conservative movements such as the New Religious Political Right. These were the years that gave birth to movies--from esoteric art-house pictures to blockbusters such as Star Wars--that seemed in many cases to be adaptations of primordial mythology, subverting liberal-to-moderate views into reactionary depictions of family life. Although filmmakers had turned to these myths to shape their works, Farnsworth observes, the unstable, volatile nature of the archetypes deconstructed their best social intentions into something rich, strange, and deadly. This thought-provoking work will be of interest to students of social history as well as film studies.

Book excerpt: While the contemporary era has witnessed a series of spectacular failures with severe and widespread global consequences, failure is still broadly understood on an individual level, while its broader causes and consequences receive little attention. This book reconceptualises failure as a method for characterising and critiquing systems and institutions on both a global and a local level. It defines global failure as comprising global inequality, economic crisis, and ecological disaster, and as a condition which informs and is informed by localised failure. It examines the negotiation between global and local failure in narratives of failed quests by four contemporary authors: Cormac McCarthy, Julia Kristeva, Michael Ondaatje, and Basma Abdel Aziz. As a genre, the quest narrative is associated with the idea of hard-won success. The failed quest narrative, or the narrative of the failed quest, is therefore the ideal vehicle through which to examine the socio-political and institutional conditions of failure. Primarily a contribution to the field of world literature, this book is also relevant to those with an interest in the contemporary novel, failure studies, and the quest narrative.

Book excerpt: In this New York Times–bestselling author’s “very funny novel,” a frustrated woman gets the ultimate makeover—by making an unwitting deal with the devil (Library Journal). Florida real estate agent Barbara Chessner is down on her luck, up several dress sizes, drowning herself in Bloody Marys—and, worst of all, has just been dumped by her husband for a blonde TV weatherperson. Tired of living the life of a woman in a “before” ad, Barbara stumbles outside in the midst of a thunderstorm and beseeches heaven to help her—unaware that someone diabolical might be listening . . . Barbara wakes up with golden hair (not her own premature gray), perfect pitch (she’s tone deaf), a strange black dog (registered to her), no double chin, a waistline . . . and definite cleavage! Talk about a good night’s sleep! Even more bizarre and seemingly wonderful things begin to happen to Barbara, including some potential new romances, and her friends at the real estate agency attribute the inexplicable to everything from hot flashes to dark forces. Not even she knows what the devil is going on. But when she finds out, all hell is going to break loose . . . “Barbara is a terrific character—clever, witty, and truly likable.” —Library Journal “Sly, smart-mouthed fun.” —People “Fiendishly funny.” —Booklist

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Complete Novels of Rudyard Kipling: The Light That Failed + Captain Courageous: A Story of the Grand Banks + Kim + The Naulahka: A Story of West and East (Illustrated)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "Stalky & Co." is a novel about adolescent boys at a British boarding school. Reflecting its origins, the novel is episodic in nature, with self-contained chapters. It is set at an unnamed school referred to as the College or the Coll., which is based on the United Services College in Devon, which Kipling attended. The character Beetle, one of the main trio, is partly based on Kipling himself, while the charismatic character Stalky is based on Lionel Dunsterville, M'Turk is based on George Charles Beresford and Mr King is based on William Carr Crofts. "Kim" is and adventure novel about the orphaned son of an Irish soldier and a poor Irish mother who have both died in poverty. Living a vagabond existence in India under British rule in the late 19th century, Kim earns his living by begging and running small errands on the streets of Lahore. "Captains Courageous" follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the spoiled son of a railroad tycoon, after he is saved from drowning by a Portuguese fisherman in the north Atlantic. "The Light That Failed" is a psychological novel. Most of the novel is set in London, but many important events throughout the story occur in Sudan or India. The Light that Failed follows the life of Dick Heldar, a painter who goes blind. "Naulahka: A Story of East and West", is an adventure novels, the story of a priceless Indian jewel. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children.
