Prone from natural disposition to retirement rather than to public display - belonging to a profession whose studies and active pursuits afford little leisure for the investigations of general science, or the cultivation of elegant literature - surrounded with other engagements, which allowed but a scanty measure of time for preparation, it would have relieved me from no small degree of embarrassment, if the duty had fallen upon some one more competent to discharge it.
