Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clydesdale Motor Truck Company existed in Clyde, Ohio, from 1917 until 1939. As veterans of the early auto industry, Clydesdale engineers worked closely with the London General Omnibus Company to develop what they described as the "perfect" truck chassis. Shipped from Clyde, Ohio, Clydesdale trucks became internationally famous during World War I. The truck's patented "Driver Under the Hood" engine governor wowed drivers and industry leaders alike. Following the war, Clydesdale took center stage at national motor truck shows and motor truck tours, and later, pioneered diesel technology. The story of the Clydesdale company provides a window into early truck manufacturing and the international trucking landscape, just as the modern industry we recognize today was beginning to develop.

Book excerpt: “Since 1910…Federal Trucks Have Been Known in Every Country—Sold on Every Continent.” One of the great “independents” from Detroit, Federal produced a “high quality truck at a good price.” In July 1910, Martin L. Plucher, vice president and general manager of the newly formed Federal Motor Truck Company, personally conducted the first Federal truck to Lynn, Massachusetts, for delivery to its owner. From 1910 to 1959, Federal assembled over 160,000 trucks for all types of uses including delivery vans, buses, garbage trucks, and over the road heavy haulers. Whatever its use, Federal declared, “You can expect years of faithful service.” In World War II Federal produced 11,338 military vehicles, earning the coveted Army-Navy “E Pennant” four times for production excellence. After the war Federal experienced the same difficulties experienced by other independents. Despite the 1950 introduction of the Style Liner and the restyled Golden Eagle Series, introduced in 1957, production of Federal trucks ended in 1959. This Photo Archive chronicles this admired truck through large-format archival photographs with detailed captions. See these legendary trucks once again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated history celebrates the 75th and 70th anniversaries of Volkswagen's two most iconic vehicles, from the first Beetles spearheaded by Ferdinand Porsche in the 1940s to the buses that became synonymous with a generation. Volkswagen is one of the most beloved brands in motoring history, thanks largely to two instantly recognizable vehicles: the Beetle (a.k.a. Bug) and the Bus. More than 23 million VW Beetles have buzzed into the world since 1945, while the VW Bus presaged the minivan by thirty-plus years. Volkswagen: Beetles and Buses examines and celebrates all aspects of the vehicles and the many cultural associations that have swirled around them for more than seven decades. The diminutive rear-engined and easily mass-produced Beetle became the most popular imported car in America during the 1960s. Its success was due to its familiar face, its wildly clever ad campaigns, and the sheer numbers produced. The equally compact yet spacious Bus (a.k.a. Kombi, Microbus, Type 2, Transporter, and simply “van”) has won millions of fans around the world with its practicality, simplicity, and design. In this beautifully illustrated and authoritatively written celebration, author Russell Hayes looks back at the vehicles while focusing on the classic air-cooled VWs that ran into the late 1970s. Along the way, readers witness the Beetle and Bus at work and at play and learn about vehicle development and growing roles in popular culture, including star appearances in films like The Love Bug, Little Miss Sunshine, Footloose, Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, as well as television shows like Lost and Once Upon a Time and on the covers of the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Bob Dylan’s Freewheelin’ album. The story is brought up to date with coverage of the New Beetle and plans for the VW Buzz, a modern electric version of the iconic Microbus due in 2022. Volkswagen: Beetles and Buses deserves a place in the motoring libraries of VW owners, automotive enthusiasts, and those simply interested in pop culture. It's the ultimate illustrated history of these beloved vehicles.

This insightful volume examines the various wheeled conveyances that have been instrumental in agriculture and commerce—carts and wagons, for instance—as well as those that have facilitated human travel—coaches, bicycles, cars, and buses, among others. Also explored is the evolution of roads, as they have expanded to accommodate various modes of wheeled transportation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vintage U.S.-made cars on the streets of Havana provide a common representation of Cuba. Journalist Richard Schweid, who traveled throughout the island to research the story of motor vehicles in Cuba today and yesterday, gets behind the wheel and behind the stereotype in this colorful chronicle of cars, buses, and trucks. In his captivating, sometimes gritty, voice, Schweid blends previously untapped historical sources with his personal experiences, spinning a car-centered history of life on the island over the past century. Packard, Studebaker, Edsel, De Soto: cars long extinct in the United States can be seen at work every day on Cuba's streets. Havana and Santiago de Cuba today are home to some 60,000 North American cars, all dating back to at least 1959, the year the Cuban Revolution prevailed. Though hardly a new part has arrived in Cuba since 1960, the cars are still on the road, held together with mechanical ingenuity and willpower. Visiting car mechanics, tracking down records in dusty archives, and talking with car-crazy Cubans of all types, Schweid juxtaposes historic moments (Fidel Castro riding to the Bay of Pigs in an Oldsmobile) with the quotidian (a weary mother's two-cent bus ride home after a long day) and composes a rich, engaging picture of the Cuban people and their history. The narrative is complemented by fifty-two historic black-and-white photographs and eight color photographs by contemporary Cuban photographer Adalberto Roque.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When motorized vehicles replaced the horse as the modern form of transportion, it wasnt as if everyone owned went out and bought a vehicle to drive, much less to haul with. Rural residents relied heavily on vendors to bring the goods directly to them or their nearest town, and vendors relied on delivery trucks to deliver their food items or services. The idea took on a life of it's own and in 1915 Reo created an entire class of vehicles called "Speed Wagons" that provided the basis for a new generation of delivery vehicles dubbed in Commercial Car Journal as "Speed Trucks". The Speed Truck chassis could provide for a whole range of special delivery-type vehicles to satisfy a growing need for reliability, speed, convenience, and a level of style that would create the right impression for the user to haul goods to its customers. Other manufacturers created specialized chassis and mechanical configurations for delivery vehicles and in addition, companies such as Boyertown Body created bodies to suit the needs of the customer, including vans, panel trucks, and even pick-up trucks. Color, paint schemes, and lettering were crucial to creating a positive image. Some of the major Marques featured in this illustrated history include Reo, Federal, Diamond T, Sterlilng, Divco, International, Fargo, Dodge Chevrolet, Ford, Graham, Pak-Age-Car (Stutz and Diamond T), to name a few.
