Meanwhile the enterprise went strugglingly forward, and by the untiring exertions of the people, the walls were completed and the building was put under roof. On' March the 13th, 1848, Rev. Mr. Drysdale, who had labored as stated supply from the organization of the Church, was elected pastor, Rev. Dr. Converse moderating the meet ing. The call was presented before Presbytery at its meeting April 13th, and on the 25th of April, Presbytery met in the Church, and ordained and installed Mr. Drysdale; Dr. Brain erd preaching the sermon, and Dr. Gilbert, delivering the charge to the people. In October of this year Mr. Drysdale was compelled by failing health to resign his charge, the Church numbering at this time thirty-two members. On the resignation of Mr. Drysdale, Rev. Charles S. Ren shaw was invited to supply the pulpit. In April of the fol lowing year he was elected to the pastorate, and installed on May the 3d, 1849; the committee of installation consisting of Rev. Messrs. Brown, Gilbert, Brainerd and Cross. During the following year, (1850) James C. Fisher and William Gallagher were elected and ordained as elders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the First Presbyterian Church, Red Springs, North Carolina, 1889-1979: Ninetieth Anniversary, June 3, 1979 The Rev. Mr. Campbell began his ministry in the now famous old churches of Barbecue, Bluff, and Longstreet. These three churches, with Brown Marsh and Black River, formed a nucleus from which all churches in Fayetteville and Wilmington Presbyteries have sprung. Mr. Campbell also preached on occasion at Raft Swamp from a stand in the grove before the church building was erected, and a Sabbath School was organized. This old church wielded a powerful influence, and one result of its ministry was the organizing of Antioch Church in 1833, which later proved to be a great influence on the Red Springs Church. The first six ordained ministers in Fayetteville Presbytery were sons of Raft Swamp, two of whom were sent to Mississippi by Synod as missionaries to the Natchez country about 1804. It is interesting to note that during the Revolutionary War, the Rev. Mr. Campbell was an outspoken advocate for freedom of the colonies, which incensed the Scottish people who were still loyal to the king, and threats were made against him. He left this section and went to Guilford County, but later returned and is buried across the Cape Fear River from Bluff Church. After the Revolution, occasional ministers passed through what is now the Philadelphus community going to settlements in the upper part of the state. Hugh Brown, a pious and influential citizen lived near the road and, being a hospitable man, his house became a favorite stopping place for these ministers who often tarried long enough to hold worship services in his home for the neighbors. This eventually led to the forming of Philadelphus Church sometime before 1794. Hugh's son Neill furnished the land, and erected a church building on Richland Swamp, and a school was established. The people who were involved had formerly been members of Raft Swamp Church. Two of Hugh Brown's sons, Daniel and Duncan, became ministers, Daniel being called to the new church as its first pastor in 1802, where he preached in both English and Gaelic. He remained at Philadelphus until 1809. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in Flemington New Jersey, for a Century: With Sketches of Local Matters for Two Hundred Years To these thronging emigrants, Hunterdon County presented unusual attractions. The climate was mild less bleak than New England, not so hot as Virginia. Peaches, plums, and berries grew plentifully in the woods. This whole region was heavily wooded with oak, hickory, beech, and maple. These forests abounded with game. The streams were alive with fish and most delicious shad made annual visitations along the bor ders. That fish was caught higher up the South Branch than Flemington, before mill dams obstructed the stream. The hauls of them in the Delaware have been enormous within the memory of old people. Also the Indians were peaceable and friendly. The Raritan was navigable up to the junction of the North and South Branches. In seasons of freshets the farmers conveyed their grain to New Brunswick in at-bottomed boats. The Delaware also was navigable up to Trenton. So that immigrants coming to this county could have the advantage of navigation within a few miles of their lands. Also early in that same century the farming lands had been well occupied in Monmouth and Bur lington Counties. Hence the passion to go on to the frontier was impelling the sons of the settlers to seek a home among the attractive hills of Hunterdon. And the county rapidly filled up from 1715 - 1730. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Delaware takes the reader on a journey through the coastal beauty of the state, from the Twelve-Mile Circle to the Nanticoke River. Although Delaware is the second smallest state in terms of area, the guide offers 27 driving tours accompanied by engaging photographs and pen-and-ink drawings. Published in 1938, this guide to the First State, also details Delaware’s rich history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the eight decades preceding the Civil War, Kentucky was the scene of tremendous building activity. Located in the western section of the original English colonies, midway between North and South, Kentucky saw the rise of an architecture that combined the traditions of nationally known designers, eager to achieve the refinements of their English mother culture, alongside the innovativeness and bold originality proper to the frontier. Tradition thus provided a tangible link with world architectural development, while innovation offered refreshing variations. The result was a distinctive regional architecture. In his newest look at Kentucky architecture, Clay Lancaster broadens his scope to include analyses of significant structures from throughout the commonwealth, illustrating the entire range of stylistic development. Like his acclaimed earlier book Antebellum Houses of the Bluegrass, the current volume provides historical background as well as drawings, photographs, and floor plans, showing both general features and details. Among the many Kentucky buildings discussed are examples by such well-known early American architects as Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Thomas Jefferson, James Dakin, Isaiah Rogers, Alexander J. Davis, and Francis Costigan, as well as the work of local master builders such as Matthew Kennedy, Micajah Burnett, Gideon Shryock, Thomas Lewinski, and John McMurtry. Also included are Kentucky buildings designed from nationally distributed architectural books and builders' guides. Lancaster gives special attention to the Geometric Style, which evolved further and produced more noteworthy monuments in Kentucky than anywhere else in America. Such buildings, in turn, bestowed a simplicity and straightforwardness on structures in later styles. As Lancaster shows, the architecture that resulted from Kentucky's fertile eclecticism constitutes a rich and rewarding architectural heritage. All lovers of fine architecture will treasure this handsome and informative book.
