Download or read book Sketches of the History of Man, in Two Volumes written by Lord Henry Home Kames and published by . This book was released on 1774 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following work is the substance of various speculations, that occasionally amused the author, and enlivened his leisure-hours. It is not intended for the learned; they are above it: nor for the vulgar; they are below it. It is intended for men, who, equally removed from the corruption of opulence, and from the depression of bodily labour, are bent on useful knowledge; who, even in the delirium of youth, feel the dawn of patriotism, and who in riper years enjoy its meridian warmth. To such men this work is dedicated; and that they may profit by it, is the author's ardent wish, and probably will be while any spirit remains in him to form a wish"--Preface. Download or read book The Image of the City written by Kevin Lynch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1964-06-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.

Book Synopsis The History of Guilford, Connecticut (Classic Reprint) by : Ralph Dunning Smith
Download or read book The History of Guilford, Connecticut (Classic Reprint) written by Ralph Dunning Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history. Book Synopsis American Military History Volume 1 by : Army Center of Military History
Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
