Book excerpt: Black youth in America must overcome many systematic obstacles to function successfully in American society. Racist social views and racist structures significantly impact Black youth's access to equitable education and resources and lead to disparate educational outcomes. One intervention that may help protect school age Black youth from the impact of racism is racial affinity groups. Racial affinity groups are successful spaces for discussing concepts unique to a group's shared experiences. An 8-session racial affinity group with fourteen Black second-grade participants was the pilot intervention used in this study. A mixed-method research design was used to evaluate this intervention. The dependent variables included self-esteem, self-efficacy, and school belonging. Student questionnaires, parent and teacher focus groups provided data which was assessed to determine the intervention's impact. The quantitative data illustrated modest and inconclusive results. Self-esteem was the dependent variable most positively impacted by the intervention, as evidenced by the quantitative data collected from students and the qualitative data collected from parents and teachers. Qualitative findings suggest that Black parents believe racial affinity groups at this age level are essential for Black youth. Teachers discussed students’ excitement in participating in the group and the improvement in some students' self-esteem. Future evaluation in this area is imperative. Recommendations for future studies are to increase the length of the intervention, improve communication between teachers and the researcher between group sessions, provide student participants with semi-structured interviews, increase generalizability, and evaluate additional domains such as racial identity and social development.

Book excerpt: This is a ground-breaking research study on Black immigrant identities in South African schools. It is the first major book on racial integration and immigrant children in South African schools. The overall aim of this study is to investigate how immigrant students negotiate and mediate their identity within the South African schooling context. This study set out to explain this complex phenomenon, guided by the following research objectives: One, to describe how immigrant student identities are framed, challenged, asserted and negotiated within the institutional cultures of schools. Two, to evaluate the extent to which the ethos of these schools has been transformed towards integration in the truest sense and to determine how immigrant students perceive this in practice? Three, to explore the ‘transnational social fields’ in terms of social networks and cross-border linkages of immigrant students and how this impacts on their identity formation. Four, to determine if there are any new forms of immigrant student self-identities that are beginning to emerge? Five, to determine the extent to which racial desegregation has been accompanied by social integration between immigrant and local students. Six, to determine the impact of the South African social/schooling context on immigrant student identity formation. And seven, to identify critical lessons and ‘good practice’ that could be learnt and used to accelerate the racial desegregation and social integration of immigrant students in South African schools.

For the latter, transformation situations may strengthen a sense of group belonging, may foster the emergence of a new group identity. After 1990, some media and scholars observed a new ethnic assertiveness among persons classified as ""coloured"" in apartheid South Africa. As a majority in the Western Cape, yet a minority on the national level, they expressed fear of being discriminated against under black majority rule: ""In the past we were not white enough, today we are not black enough."" In this statement resonates a sense of exclusion from the democratic process. By evaluating a quantitative survey, this book analyses how a minority perceives the South African transformation process. The author examines attitudes towards the old regime, towards new government policies and intergroup relations as well as their impact on the self-perception and the political behaviour of coloured people in South Africa. "
