Download or read book Environmental Physiology of Fishes written by M.A. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very good piece of work, I assure you, and a merry. -Now, good Peter Quince, call forth your actors by the scroll. -Masters, spread yourselves. A Midsummer Night's Dream. Act 1, Sc. 2 This volume is the outcome of a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in August 1979 at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. About 130 participants from all the countries of the aJiiance as well as India and Japan attended this event which lasted two weeks. Seventeen of these participants had been invited to present reviews of chosen topics, usually in their specialty. This book is constituted mainly of these presentations, which were prepared as chapters. In addition, six of the participants, whose seminars were found to complement the main chapters, were coopted by the invited lectures/authors to provide additional chapters. Although a lecture was given on electric fields, a chapter on this matter is unfortunately absent due to the lack of preparation time. One may say that Environmental Physiology of Fishes as a discipline originated in Canada. Having been involved as a teacher and worker in this field since 19 54, it was but natural that I was tempted to organise an ASI and get a volume out on the matter. I was encouraged by discussions with colleagues and the acceptance on the part of a large number of eminent colleagues to attend the ASI, deliver lectures and write chapters.

Book Synopsis Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes by : Robert J. Wootton
Download or read book Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes written by Robert J. Wootton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes is the first integrated review of the reproductive biology of the bony fishes, which are the most species-rich and diversified group of vertebrates. Teleosts display remarkable variation in their modes of reproduction, and this volume is intended to provide a framework for understanding the remarkable reproductive diversity of this group. It describes their reproductive biology using, wherever possible, phylogenetic analyses and life-history theory as a means to interpret the information. The book addresses the genetic, physiological, behavioural, ecological, evolutionary and applied aspects of teleost reproduction in a comparative framework that emphasises the adaptive basis of reproductive diversity. Reproductive Biology of Teleost Fishes provides a comprehensive synthesis of fish reproduction that will be of great interest to life scientists, particularly ecologists, evolutionary biologists, physiologists and advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and research workers requiring a comprehensive overview of fish reproduction. The book is suitable for courses in fish biology and ecology, reproductive physiology and reproductive genetics. It also addresses applied questions and will be of value for courses on fisheries science and aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where biological sciences, fisheries science and aquaculture are studied and taught should have several copies of this important book on their shelves.

Book Synopsis The Regulation of the Annual Reproductive Cycle in the Three-spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus Aculeatus L. by : Bertil Borg
Download or read book The Regulation of the Annual Reproductive Cycle in the Three-spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus Aculeatus L. written by Bertil Borg and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis the regulation of seasonal reproduction in the three-spined stickleback, especially the mechanisms of photoperiodic influences, was studied. Two main questions were asked : 1) Are extra-retinal photoreceptors involved in the photosexual response ? 2) What is the functional relationship between the separated yearly cycles in steroid-dependent characters and spermatogenesis ? Methods : Electron microscopy, immuno-cytochemistry and other histological techniques. Laboratory experiments using different photoperiods, temperatures and hormones, evaluated with the use of organ weights and routine histology. Results : 1. Both photoperiod and temperature have strong, though season-dependent effects on reproduction. 2. Extra-retinal photoreception can control the photoperiodic effects on reproduction in this species. 3. The pineal organ of the stickleback contains well-developed photoreceptor cells. 4. High doses of melatonin have antigonadal effects, resembling the effects of short photoperiod and high temperature. 5. Well-developed androgen-dependent characters and active spermatogenesis do not occur simultaneously. Androgen-administration inhibits spermatogeneis. 6. LHRH-immunoreactive cells are present close to the ventricle in the diencephalon and mesencephalon.
Book Synopsis Tinbergen’s Legacy in Behaviour: Sixty Years of Landmark Stickleback Papers by : Frank von Hippel
Download or read book Tinbergen’s Legacy in Behaviour: Sixty Years of Landmark Stickleback Papers written by Frank von Hippel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a flurry of post-war productivity, Niko Tinbergen re-established his lab in Leiden, wrote landmark papers and his famous book The Study of Instinct, and founded the journal Behaviour to serve the burgeoning field of ethology. Tinbergen and his senior assistant, Jan van Iersel, published their classic paper, "Displacement reactions in the three-spined stickleback," in the first issue of his new journal in 1948. Stickleback are now a powerful model in the fields of behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology, developmental genetics, and ecotoxicology - an extraordinary development for a small fish that began its modeling career among an enthusiastic core of Tinbergen students in the 1930s. From a series of clever experiments with painted model fish to the use of the sequenced genome to analyze the genetic basis of courtship, stickleback science progressed in leaps and bounds, often via seminal studies published in the pages of Behaviour. Tinbergen’s Legacy in Behaviour traces sixty years in the development of science using stickleback as a model, with 34 original articles covering topics ranging from homosexuality and cannibalism to genetics and speciation. Desmond Morris, Theo Bakker, Robert Wootton, Michael Bell, Tom Reimchen, Boyd Kynard, Harman Peeke, and Iain Barber provide fresh retrospectives on their republished works. Commentary by Frank von Hippel accompanies the articles and explains the roles they played in the frontiers of science as researchers falsified or expanded upon one another’s ideas.
