Book excerpt: This experimental study reviewed the efficacy of a new classroom tool known as the Showcase Assignment. This assignment reduces public speaking anxiety in the public speaking classroom. This assignment asked students to pick a talent (poetry reading, singing, etc.) that is important to them in some way, give a brief description of what their talent is, disclose its importance to them, and perform it in front of the class. This study was based on literature related to communication apprehension, experiential learning and self-disclosure theories, and classroom environment. This study used pre-test post-test survey methodology of 179 students, split into treatment and control groups, enrolled in speech courses at two mid-sized universities in the Southern United States to answer five research questions: (1) How does the implementation of the Showcase Assignment affect public speaking anxiety as it relates to speech classrooms? (2) How does the Showcase Assignment impact grades on speaking assignments compared to those that are not exposed? (3) How do students describe the Showcase Assignment in relation to a supportive classroom environment? (4) How do students describe the Showcase Assignment in relation to creative learning? (5) How do perceived instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment compare to the students' perception of instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment? The study found that the Showcase Assignment did not have a significant impact on students' self-reports of anxiety overall but, the instructor teaching the Showcase Assignment did impact those reports. The Showcase Assignment did improve student́'s observed anxiety levels, meaning that students in the experiment group appeared more confident when speaking. The assignment also showed an improvement in student grades on speaking assignments. The study found that students reported positive feedback concerning the Showcase Assignment including its benefits in creating a supportive classroom environment and in enhancing creativity skills to help with other speech class presentations. Finally, the study showed that positive instructor personality and implementation of the Showcase Assignment will result in positive student feedback.

Book excerpt: Previous research has demonstrated that video feedback through video self-modelling effectively improves public speaking performance; however, results have been inconclusive with respect to its effectiveness in decreasing public speaking anxiety. The present study investigated the effects of video feedback on public speaking anxiety by implementing a video self-modelling technique in a sample of university students with public speaking anxiety. Students with upcoming presentations in their university-level courses were recruited to participate. They completed an online questionnaire measuring state and trait public speaking anxiety and were filmed performing a practice version of their upcoming presentation. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental condition, in which they were provided with and were instructed to watch their video prior to their class presentation or a control condition in which they were not provided with a copy of their presentation to watch. After their live presentations in class, participants filled out a final online questionnaire measuring state and trait public speaking anxiety. It was hypothesized that all participants would experience a decrease in state and trait public speaking anxiety from pre-intervention to post-intervention with the experimental participants experiencing a significant decrease in state and trait anxiety compared to the control participants. Results showed that all participants experienced a decrease in state public speaking anxiety from pre-intervention to post-intervention; however no other findings were statistically significant. Possible mechanisms, limitations, and future directions for these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACTPublic speaking is considered a valuable and necessary skill in professional, academic, and social contexts. However, research shows that public speaking anxiety is the top social fear for most people. Whereas public speaking anxiety exists among physical, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions, psychological approaches to intervention typically target cognitions. Negative self-talk is a component of cognitive anxiety, and interventions to improve self-talk have been widely implemented in clinical and sports psychology disciplines. This study examined the effects of a novel online self-talk intervention on public speaking anxiety reduction and speech performance ratings. The study also explored participants' perceptions of the intervention on reducing speech anxiety, improving speech performance, improving speech self-talk, and increasing speech self-efficacy of students in the college public speaking classroom context. This quasi-experimental research study utilized a convenience sample of 149 students enrolled in the public speaking basic course at a small, rural, state college in the southeastern United States region. The study included experimental and control groups. Data were analyzed primarily using quantitative methods with a smaller qualitative component. Results showed no significant differences between experimental and control groups in speech anxiety reduction, as assessed by the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety (PRPSA) (McCroskey, 1970) and the Speech Anxiety Thoughts Inventory (SATI) (Cho and others, 2004) when comparisons were made from the beginning of the semester until the end. Speech anxiety in both the experimental group, which received skills training and the online self-talk intervention, and the control group, which received skills training alone, decreased from pre-test to post-test. Hierarchical multi-regression analyses revealed no significant predictor variables in terms of groups (experimental or control), gender, ethnicity, or college classification; however, PRPSA and SATI pre-test scores were found to be significant predictors of speech anxiety reduction. Results suggested that the majority of participants in the experimental group perceived the intervention as at least somewhat beneficial in reducing their speech anxiety, improving their speech performance, improving their speech self-talk, and increasing their speech self-efficacy. The participants indicated that the intervention was particularly beneficial in improving their speech self-talk and increasing their speech self-efficacy. Future research should focus on extending investigations on self-talk interventions on cognitive speech related variables, as the results here have implications for benefits not only to students, but for society at large.

The study employed a single-subject A-B design with parametric variations. Two phases were utilized in this study: baseline (exposure therapy) and treatment (video self-modeling) with a one-month follow-up. Generalization probes were also employed to assess whether or not decreases in PSA would generalize to other settings. Results indicate a significant decrease in public speaking anxiety from both pre- to post-treatment as well as from baseline to exposure. However, these results may be specific to public speaking anxiety, as other forms of anxiety did not result in such decreases. Results from a post-treatment survey indicated that the participant felt that the treatment was beneficial in reducing public speaking anxiety.
