Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of low frequency floating potential fluctuations (f d"200 kHz) in a research tokamak plasma using two spatially separated electrostatic probes has been performed. The spectra, correlation length, and the phase velocity of the fluctuations in both the radial and azimuthal direction have been determined. The propagation velocity in the toroidal direction was also measured and was found to be in the direction of electron current flow. The waves traveled azimuthally in the ion diamagnetic drift direction, even after the usual E x B rotation was taken into account. The electron density fluctuations associated with these oscillations were large, [delta]n/n [approximately] 0.35 - 0.50. The spectra were found to have regularly spaced peaks which seemed to be related to specific azimuthal modes (m =1,2,3, ..., etc.) A parametric study was made to determine what effect plasma parameters had on these peaks. During periods of high electron density in the first 2 msec of the plasma lifetime, strong sawtooth type oscillations were observed. These oscillations typically had frequencies of approximately 10 kHz and were also present when large amounts of neutral gas were added during the discharge by a process called "gas puffing." The results are compared with experimental observations made on other plasma devices with electric and magnetic probes and with microwave and CO2 laser scattering techniques. (The scattering measurements are complimentary to the probe measurements since, in the former case, the wavelength is fixed by the scattering angle, but the oscillations could not be spatially localized.) The oscillations in the Caltech torus were probably related to a drift-tearing type instability which is thought to play a major role in the anomalous particle and energy flux observed in tokamaks. Comparisons are made between current theory and the experimental results. However, the theory for the observed oscillations is still in a rudimentary stage of development, and it is hoped that the present investigation will stimulate future analytical work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces heavy ion beam probe diagnostics and presents an overview of its applications. The heavy ion beam probe is a unique tool for the measurement of potential in the plasma core in order to understand the role of the electric field in plasma confinement, including the mechanism of transition from low to high confinement regimes (L–H transition). This allows measurement of the steady-state profile of the plasma potential, and its use has been extended to include the measurement of quasi-monochromatic and broadband oscillating components, the turbulent-particle flux and oscillations of the electron density and poloidal magnetic field. Special emphasis is placed on the study of Geodesic Acoustic Modes and Alfvén Eigenmodes excited by energetic particles with experimental data sets. These experimental studies help to understand the link between broadband turbulent physics and quasi-coherent oscillations in devices with a rather different magnetic configuration. The book also compares spontaneous and biased transitions from low to high confinement regimes on both classes of closed magnetic traps (tokamak and stellarator) and highlights the common features in the behavior of electric potential and turbulence of magnetized plasmas. A valuable resource for physicists, postgraduates and students specializing in plasma physics and controlled fusion.

Book excerpt: The Quasi-Coherent (QC) mode, observed at high densities during enhanced D-alpha (EDA) H-Mode in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, has been studied with a phase contrast imaging (PCI) diagnostic. The QC mode is believed to be responsible for the reduced particle (and impurity) confinement during H-mode operation, so as to allow quasi-steady state operation of the tokamak. It is proposed that the QC mode is a form of resistive ballooning mode known as the resistive X-point mode. The measured dispersion and mode stability are found to be in good agreement with the resistive X-point mode predicted by the BOUT (Boundary Plasma Turbulence) code.

Book excerpt: The study of edge plasma physics in tokamaks has developed rapidly in recent years and is now considered as one of the major research areas of magnetic fusion. Edge probe techniques are a necessary experimental contribution to such studies, providing information about the plasma flux to the walls of the reactor. The experiments that were carried out on the Tore Supra tokamak to investigate the scrape-off layer conditions in presence of multiple discrete limiters are presented. The baseline of the scenario is to limit the discharge on discrete limiters on the low field side of the tokamak chamber, increasing the minor radius while the safety factor is kept at a constant value 4.8. Analytical tools for 3D magnetic connection analysis and magnetic field mapping together with a new method for LCFS evaluation are also presented."

Book excerpt: This work presents one of the most powerful methods of plasma diagnosis in exquisite detail, to guide researchers in the theory and measurement techniques of light scattering in plasmas. Light scattering in plasmas is essential in the research and development of fusion energy, environmental solutions, and electronics. Referred to as the "Bible" by researchers, the work encompasses fusion and industrial applications essential in plasma research. It is the only comprehensive resource specific to the plasma scattering technique. It provides a wide-range of experimental examples and discussion of their principles with worked examples to assist researchers in applying the theory. Computing techniques for solving basic equations helps researchers compare data to the actual experiment New material on advances on the experimental side, such as the application of high density plasmas of inertial fusion Worked out examples of the scattering technique for easier comprehension of theory

This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The edge fluctuations play a critical role in the overall tokamak confinement. Experiments on TEXT show that electrostatic fluctuations in the edge plasma are the dominant mechanism for energy and particle transport. The basic mechanisms responsible for the edge turbulence are the subject of ongoing research in fusion devices. To understand the driving forces responsible for edge fluctuations, a novel experiment is underway on TEXT to actively modify the turbulence at the plasma edge by launching waves using electrostatic probes in the shadow of the limiter. This technique permits active probing of the spectral properties of the edge turbulence. This new approach to the study of edge fluctuations can provide more insight into the basic dynamics of the turbulence and may, in turn, enable detailed comparison with the theory. These experiments, which rely on the use of oscillating electric fields at the plasma edge, complement edge fluctuation control studies that are presently limited to the use of applied dc biasing to influence the edge electric field profile. These experiments have been extended to control of the edge plasma fluctuation level, using feedback to explore its effects on the edge turbulence characteristics as well as on confinement.
