Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Study in the Psychology of Reading More recently, however, a marked Change has been taking place. As a result, the reading process is rapidly being analyzed, and careful studies are being made of its several components, such as rate and comprehension. Individual differences are being determined, reading materials standardized, norms and standards of accomplishment established, the differences between silent and oral reading more definitely set forth, and new practices developed. This new and promising movement is due in part to the influence of the rapidly growing technical psychology of reading, the incep tion and development of which are traced in the next Chapter, and in part it is part and parcel of the present scientific movement in education - the movement which is ruthlessly challenging all of our practices, in so far as these rest upon traditional and empirical rather than scientific principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Reading: An Experimental Study of the Reading Pauses and Movements of the Eye These interesting observations were further extended and first given significance by the extensive investigations of Erdmann and Dodge.2 By a similar method of direct observation, the movements of the reader's eye were recorded from the reflection in a mirror. It was found that an average of five fixation pauses per line was made by one subject (d) in reading a page from Locke's Es say, (width Of line cm.) and an average Of eight pauses per line was made by E in reading from Helmholtz's Physiol. Optik, (width of line The variations from this average were small. The main conclusions from their varied experiments are the following: A larger number Of pauses are made in difficult than in comparatively simple narration, and the simpler the text the more nearly equal are the pauses and movements. Similarly a longer time and more pauses are necessary to read a foreign lan guage than to read one's own language. The same is true when the attention is directed to the text, as in proof-reading. The average angle of movement between two successive pauses varied from 3 54' to 5 for difficult or unfamiliar passages of the above cited books, and from 4 14' to 5 36' for familiar passages. That is, in either case3 the eye does not reach to the very edge of the line, but the first and last fixations fall within the line. The first fixation comes nearer to the beginning of the line than the last fixation to the end of the line. This distance, as the angle of movement shows, is lessened in the more difficult reading. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, reading research had become a true interdisciplinary endeavour with flavours of anthropology, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, educational psychology, linguistics, neuroscience and instructional technology. Given appropriate integration, results from these diverse perspectives can enhance our understanding of reading behaviour tremendously, both in its acquisition and in its skilled functioning. Thus, the enthusiasm for such interdisciplinary interaction had been quite intense for some time. In the years before publication, the National Reading Conference had been doing everything possible to accelerate this interaction. Originally published in 1981, the chapters in this book are the fruits of that effort. The research focuses on specifying skills in identifying alphabetical elements and the rules that govern their combination, on constructing models that characterize the recognition of individual words and the interpretation of texts, and on discovering what factors are responsible for blocking the normal acquisition process in many children. Chapters 2 to 12 of this book reflect these changing foci. They are nevertheless sandwiched by two chapters that deal with the historical background and future outlook of reading instruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Inspection Copy available for instructors here The field of social psychology is defined by a number of 'classic studies' that all students need to understand and engage with. These include ground-breaking experiments by researchers such as Asch, Festinger, Milgram, Sherif, Tajfel and Zimbardo. With the help of international experts who are renowned for work that has extended upon these researchers' insights, this book re-examines these classic studies through careful reflection on their findings and a lively discussion of the subsequent work that they have inspired. Organized in a way that way maps onto the content of most introductory courses, this title can work at a number of levels: as an accessible text for introductory classes that present a historical analysis of social psychology via its key studies, or as a broad-ranging text for higher-level courses that survey contemporary theory and encourage critical thinking. More generally, it is a compelling read for anyone who wants to know more about social psychology and the dramatic studies that lie at its heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Pedagogy of Reading: With a Review of the History, of Reading and Writing and of Methods, Texts, and Hygiene in Reading Ten years has given a development here of which experimental psychology may be proud. Dodge, Zeit ler, Messmer, Dearborn, and others have thoroughly investigated important phases of reading, and the col lected studies now present a very tolerable account of the main processes involved. It has therefore seemed to me that a conspectus should be made of this work, not to close the story but to furnish a new point of departure for further study, and to give perspective for new researches. Then it is due to educatien that from time to time the psychological investigations that have pedagogical bear ings be edited, for such applications as education can helpfully make of them. And while engaged in this latter task, for reading, and falling in with much of the pedagogical literature of the subject, it became ever more evident that there was great need of bringing together the data not merely from the psychology of reading, but from the history of reading and of reading methods, from the current practice and points of view in the subject, and from the side of hygiene, drawing finally such conclusions as these collected data might warrant for the guidance of present and future practice in reading and learning to read.
