Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Research Into Surgical Shock: An Essay Awarded the Cartwright Prize, for 1897 Considering the great importance of the subject, it is a matter for surprise that there has not as yet been presented, so far as I am aware, an account of any considerable experimental research into surgical shock. The present research had progressed but little before it became apparent that its scope was so comprehensive, and involved so many unsettled problems in physiology, that a clearly satisfactory termination could not be hoped for. The aim has been to obtain graphic data furnished in the performance of various surgical operations or by the infliction of different injuries. For the sake of clearness certain hypotheses have been advanced in a part of the research, with the understanding that they are subject to future change. In the main I have aimed to obtain the results bearing on the subject, without always assuming to be able to explain the mechanism of their production. The magnitude of the subject and the great number of unsolved questions of physiology involved must serve as my apology for the incompleteness of the research. All the experiments were performed on unselected dogs, in regular order as they were supplied by the laboratory servant. Complete records of each experiment, including the tracings, description of the animal, of the experiment, and of the autopsy, have been preserved. Only a sufficient number of tracings to serve as illustrations have been published. In all, one hundred and forty-eight animals have been subjected to experiment. Book Synopsis Pathophysiology of Shock, Sepsis, and Organ Failure by : Günther Schlag
Download or read book Pathophysiology of Shock, Sepsis, and Organ Failure written by Günther Schlag and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book current knowledge of the pathophysiology of shock, sepsis and multi organ failure is presented. The rapid progress which has been made and the results achieved in intensive care medicine are based on sound basic research, which is duly reflected in these chapters. Multiorgan failure is the foremost cause of postoperative and posttraumatic death and many complex mechanisms are involved. Only with a good foundation of basic research can abnormalities in the physiological, biochemical, and morphological course of shock be recognized and the necessary conclusions for treatment drawn. Therapy must proceed from profound knowledge of the multi variant physiological events in order to influence shock, sepsis and organ failure. Although numerous possibilities for therapy have arisen from pharmaceutical research in recent years, they are beyond the scope of this book and are not discussed here. To gain a better understanding of the pathophysiological events it was necessary to examine and to describe different models that simulate and reproduce these events. Here we describe the causative agents (shock) and the consequences (sepsis, organ failure) in two main sections, divided on the basis of their pathophysiology.
