Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930's. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M ́ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of predicting the behavior of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient is re-examined. An outline of the problem is given along with a brief summary of the work that has already been done, including both experimental investigation are presented for a separating turbulent boundary layer with various pressure distributions. An approximate theory is developed in which the momentum integral equation is satisfied for each half of the boundary layer. The velocity profiles used in the analysis consist of the well known wall and wake regions, resulting in a two-parameter family with the Reynolds number as one parameter. It is assumed, with some experimental justification, that the eddy viscosity can be reasonably approximated from zero pressure gradient experimets. The numerical calculations, using the Runge-Kutta procedure, show good agreement with the experiments. The reliability that can be expected of such approximate methods is discussed. (Author).

This book was released on 1973 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental investigation of the effect of adverse pressure gradient on the vortex breakdown phenomenon in a diverging tube are presented. Adverse pressure gradient was found to be as significant in determining the breakdown position as were the previously known parameters of Reynolds and circulation numbers. An approximate momentum analysis for predicting the vortex breakdown position was carried out which appears to hold promise as a breakdown predictor. (Modified author abstract).

This book was released on 1988 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experiment studied the effect of streamwise vortices on unsteady turbulent boundary-layer separation. The objectives were to document the flow field, to characterize the time response of the boundary layer, and to understand the actual mechanisms by which the streamwise vortices modify boundary-layer behavior. A new configuration for non-obtrusive three-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) determined the phase averaged velocity and Reynolds stress components, in an unsteady water tunnel, at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of 1840. The streamwise vortices were created by three pairs of half-delta wing vortex generators, while the boundary-layer separation was controlled through impulsively initiated opposite-wall suction, which created a strong adverse pressure gradient. The time response of the freestream velocity demonstrates that convection is the primary mechanism by which vortex generators modify the response of the boundary layer. There is an initial fast response throughout the boundary layer which is unaffected by the presence of vortex generators, followed by a slow or convective response, the magnitude of which is substantially modified by the presence of the vortex generators. Flow control, Unsteady turbulent layers. Aircraft, Vortex generators. (jes).
Book Synopsis Experimental Investigation of the Turbulence Production Mechanism in Boundary Layers by : R. E. Falco

This book was released on 1986 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past year we have discovered the mechanism of production of the long streaks and a mechanism for creation of vortex ring-like typical eddies, and have demonstrated the occurrence of both within a real turbulent boundary layer. These aspects were the missing links needed to complete the conceptual structural model. This model de-emphasizes the importance of hairpin vortices in wall layer transport. However, experimental determination of the relative importance of each of the elements of the model in low Reynolds number layers is far from complete, and we know very little of the Reynolds number dependence or pressure gradient dependence of the model. What we have learned so far suggests several critical parameters that can be manipulated to control the production of turbulence and hence reduce drag. In the proposed research we want to focus on acquiring additional data to support the rational theory that has been formed so as to provide the basis for determining how much leverage we have in our efforts to control boundary layer turbulence.
