Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Investigation of the Process of Choosing The Experimental Investigation of the Process of Choosing By Raymond H.Wheeler University of Oregon I. Introduction The experimental investigation here reported aims to present a detailed description and analysis of the mental processes involved in the act of choosing, together with an interpretation of the functioning of these mental processes. In 1910 Michotte and Prum (6)made an experimental analysis of the act of choosing. Their materials consisted of groups of numbers which were written upon cards in such fashion that certain simple arithmetical operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing), were possible and convenient; and their method consisted of presenting one of these cards in a tachistoscope, with the instructions that the observer should choose for a serious motive either to add or subtract, to multiply or divide the numbers. Here it was found that one of the determining factors of the volitional consciousness consisted of a feeling of mental activity conscience de I action) which is unanalyzable and which is intimately associated with a consciousness of the self. The authors expressly state that this feeling of activity should be differentiated sharply from an awareness of muscular strain. Contemporary with these latter experiments, Barrett(3) investigated motives and motivation. He first established strong associations between eight unpleasantly tasting liquids and eight corresponding nonsense names; then he presented these names to his observers in as many combinations of pairs as possible. On a shelf between the observer and the experimental apparatus rested the two glasses of liquids corresponding to the names in the tachistoscope. Treats the problem in similar fashion, but where mcdougall definitely attributes sense of effort only to the presence of the self-regarding sentiment, Stout refers all forms of volitional choice to the interposition Of a self-factor, and under the concept self as expressed in the word I is included in systematic unity the life history Of the individual, past, present and future, as it appears to himself and others together with all its possible or imaginary develop ments The motives are motives only in so far as they arise from the nature Of the self, and presuppose the connec tion with the self as a determining factor. From this it fol lows that the recognized reasons for a decision can never con stitute the entire cause Of a decision. Behind them there al ways lies the idea of the self as a whole. What this involves can never be completely analysed or stated in the form Of definite reasons or special motives. Calkins (5 p. 226) also specifically emphasizes the ego-centric nature of volition. In will I am actively, assertively, related to my environment, I am conscious of my superiority and my independence Of it, I conceive of it as existing mainly for my own use or gratifica tion. And she finally dissents emphatically from any attempt to define the act merely in structural terms of sensation, image and feeling, the consciousness of the self as Willing being utterly irreducible to such. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Investigation of the Action of Medicines, Vol. 1: Circulation Pathology. - In order to choose a drug which will have the effect that we desire to obtain, we must know where the morbid changes are taking place, and what their nature is and we must be sure that our medicine will act on the affected part, and in such a way as to counter act the disease. We must trace every symptom which we see, back to its unseen source; every flush on the cheek, every quickening of the pulse, back to the vaso-motor or cardiac nerves, which have allowed the capillaries to become dilated, and thus produced the redness, or have permitted the heart to beat more rapidly than its wont. We must then inquire what has produced this alteration in the nervous system, and so on, till at last we discover, if possible, the hidden cause of the mischief. We will then give that remedy which will act in the proper way'on the part which we believe to be the seat of the morbid process; and, if the expected result does not ensue, we shall, at any rate, have discovered what the pathology of the disease is not; and, by trying a remedy which will act in a different way or on a different structure, we may find out what it really is. When I Speak of the pathology of a disease, I do not mean those obvious alterations in the structure of an organ which we meet with in post mortem examinations, but the so-called functional changes which precede and are the cause of both them and the symptoms. For ex ample, the disorganisation of a man's liver by the presence of an abscess, or of his kidneys by fatty degeneration, is not the disease from which he suffered, any more than a field strewn with slain or crowded with heaps of wounded is a battle. The disease was the alteration in the nervous and vascular systems, and in the nutrition of tissues, which we call the inflammatory process, and which produced the abscess and degeneration, and the disturbance of the same systems to which these lesions in their turn give rise just as an army may not only lose the battle for want of the assistance which its slain and wounded would have given, but its retreat may be embarrassed by their presence. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book excerpt: In a fascinating analysis of the great psychological and sociological thinkers—including Freud, Maslow, McClelland, Durkheim, Skinner, Lewin and Mead—this erudite text challenges the models, myths and metaphors of modern psychology. Psychologists have promoted the view that human beings are the victims of internal and external forces, and have laboured to absorb free and responsible individuals into a pseudo-scientific framework that denies moral agency and thus renders them incapable of recognising notions of right and wrong. This book will appeal to anyone who has read enough psychology to have been perplexed and frustrated by its famous emperors. It demonstrates that if we take these naked emperors seriously and deny human freedom and personal responsibility, we shall have contributed to the undermining of our civilisation. With skill and verve, the book carries readers through an array of ideas to a ‘purposive psychology’ that enables individuals to gain insight into, and mastery of, themselves.

Book excerpt: Constructing Social Theories presents to the reader a range of strategies for constructing theories, and in a clear, rigorous, and imaginative manner, illustrates how they can be applied. Arthur L. Stinchcombe argues that theories should not be invented in the abstract—or applied a priori to a problem—but should be dictated by the nature of the data to be explained. This work was awarded the Sorokin prize by the American Sociological Association as the book that made an outstanding contribution to the progress of sociology in 1970.

The book Emotional Intelligence: A Cybernetic Approach, to the best of the authors’ knowledge is a first compreh- sive text of its kind that provides a clear introduction to the subject in a precise and insightful writing style. It begins with a philosophical introduction to E- tional Intelligence, and gradually explores the mathematical models for emotional dynamics to study the artificial control of emotion using music and videos, and also to determine the interactions between emotion and logic from the points of view of reasoning. The later part of the book covers the chaotic behavior of - existing emotions under certain conditions of emotional dynamics. Finally, the book attempts to cluster emotions using electroencephalogram signals, and d- onstrates the scope of application of emotional intelligence in several engineering systems, such as human-machine interfaces, psychotherapy, user assistance s- tems, and many others. The book includes ten chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the s- ject from a philosophical and psychological standpoint. It outlines the fundamental causes of emotion arousal, and typical characteristics of the phenomenon of an emotive experience. The relation between emotion and rationality of thoughts is also introduced here. Principles of natural regulation of emotions are discussed in brief, and the biological basis of emotion arousal using an affective neu- scientific model is introduced next.
