This book was released on 1976 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of the flow over delta and double-delta wings was conducted in a 7' x 10' low speed wing tunnel. The configurations tested were AR-3 and AR-4 delta wings and the AR-4 wing which was modified with AR-1 and AR-2 strakes attached to form double-delta wings. Pressure measurements, surface flow visualization, and vortex core visualization studies were conducted over a wide range of angles of attack.

Book excerpt: An experimental and analytical investigation was carried out to determine the character of the lee side flow field over a slender delta wing with sharp leading edges in a hypersonic free stream. The experiments of the initial phase of a two part experimental program were for the purpose of obtaining qualitative data to identify the dominant features of the flow field. Schlieren, vapor screen and surface oil flow were useful experimental techniques in this application. The surface pressure, surface temperature, and impact pressure were measured at the points of an extensive array in the lee side flow to determine the magnitude and extent of the flow phenomena. Analysis of the experimental results led to a description of the principal features of the flow field. The character of the flow was identified in three regimes by a specific and dominant property of the flow. The principal concern of this research program was for regime number 2 which had the following characteristics. The viscous flow field on the lee side of the wing caused a significant interaction with the inviscid flow which caused an effective change in the wing geometry. The flow expanded to the displacement boundary layer across the wing leading edge, causing a deflection of the velocity vector toward the plane of symmetry (a plane through the central chord and normal to the surface of the wing), which caused the occurrence of a realignment shock imbedded in the inviscid flow. This shock was sufficiently strong to cause the viscous layer to separate. Results of an impact pressure survey indicated that to a good approximation, the flow field was conical. (Author).

This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from an experimental investigation documenting the flowfield over a 75 deg swept delta wing at an angle-of-attack of 20.5 deg are presented. Results obtained include surface flow visualization, off-body flow visualization, and detailed flowfield surveys for various Reynolds numbers. Flowfield surveys at Reynolds numbers of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 million based on the root chord were conducted with both a Pitot pressure probe and a 5-hole pressure probe; and 3-component laser velocimeter surveys were conducted at a Reynolds number of 1.0 million. The Pitot pressure surveys were obtained at 5 chordwise stations, the 5-hole probe surveys were obtained at 3 chordwise stations and the laser velocimeter surveys were obtained at one station. The results confirm the classical roll up of the flow into a pair of primary vortices over the delta wing. The velocity measurements indicate that Reynolds number has little effect on the global structure of the flowfield for the Reynolds number range investigated. Measurements of the non-dimensional axial velocity in the core of the vortex indicate a jet like flow with values greater than twice freestream. Comparisons between velocity measurements from the 5-hole pressure probe and the laser velocimeter indicate that the pressure probe does a reasonable job of measuring the flowfield quantities where the velocity gradients in the flowfield are low. This book was released on 1983 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation was performed to study, by employing a laserlight-sheet and oil-flow visualization technique, the flow above and behind a sharp-edge 76 deg, delta wing and two sharp-edged double-delta wing models (76/60 and 76/40 deg., kink at midcord). In addition, balance measurements were performed to determine lift, drag and pitching moment. The tests were carried out for angles of attack from 5 to 25 deg. and at a free-stream velocity of 30 m/sec, corresponding to a Reynolds number of 1400000 x 10 to the 6th power, based on centerline chord. Above both double-delta wings a single-branched strake vortex is formed fed by vorticity from the strake leading edge. Downstream of the leading-edge kink a wing vortex is formed which is conjectured to be single-branched at about 5 deg, angle of attack and double branched at angles of 10 deg., an beyond. The flow pattern downstream of the trailing edge of the 76/60 deg. double-delta wing has been observed to be similar to that behind the delta wing. Above the 76/40 deg. double-delta wing breakdown of both the wing and strake vortices took place ahead of the trailing edge. (Author).
