Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the bulk properties of turbulent, three-dimensional, incompressible, air jets issuing into a quiescent air ambient is presented. The jet orifices utilized included rectangular, elliptical, axisymmetric and triangular geometries. Experimental results of pertinent mean flow properties such as axis velocity decay, half-width growth, etc., are reported. The flow fields of such jets are found to be characterized by three distinct regions in the axis velocity decay. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that low-speed jets which originate from non-axisymmetric orifices decay to axisymmetry far downstream of the jet exit. (Author).

This book was released on 1963 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results on the turbulent mixing process between carbon dioxide and hydrogen central jets exhausting into a moving concentric stream of air are presented. The diffusion of mass and momentum only are considered, since both streams are at approximately equal temperature. The flow velocities are in the low to high subsonic range. Principal points of investigation are the condition of equal velocity between jets and the condition of equal mass flow per unit area between jets. Radial and axial distributions of concentration and velocity are presented. On the basis of the measurements it is concluded that no tendency towards segregation of the stream exists when either the velocities or the mass flows of the streams are equal. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the product of local density and eddy kinematic viscosity coefficient can be assumed to be solely dependent upon the axial coordinate. In agreement with previous results it is found that mass diffuses more readily than momentum. Finally, a formulation of the eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity coefficients that adequately describe the results obtained is derived. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of Ducted, Reactive, Turbulent Jet Mixing with Recirculation by : D. E. Chriss

This book was released on 1977 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of ducted, two stream, subsonic, reactive, turbulent jet mixing with recirculation was conducted. A primary jet of air at a mass flow rate of 0.075 lb/sec and velocity of 700 ft/sec was surrounded by an outer, low velocity, hydrogen stream. Data were obtained with hydrogen-air ratios of 0.143 and 0.107. The duct-to-inner nozzle diameter ratio was ten. Radial distributions of hydrogen mass fraction, mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, and total pressure as well as axial distributions of wall hydrogen mass fraction and wall static pressure are presented for axial stations from one-half to five duct diameters from the nozzle exit plane. Comparison of the experimental data with calculations assuming frozen or equilibrium chemistry indicate that he measured velocity, pressure, and composition data are, in general, self-consistent. The maximum turbulent intensities which occurred in the center of the mixing layer and within the recirculation eddy were very high having values of 20 percent of the jet exit velocity. The velocity and composition field indicate that, while and mixing in the reactive flow field is slower than for the nonreactive case, the reaction had little effect on the size and location of the recirculation zone within the mixing duct.
