Quantitative measurements of the stand-off distance were made in a three-inch electromagnetic shock tube with free-stream velocities up to 22,000 feet per second. The test body was a hemispherical cylinder containing a coaxial pulsed magnet coil in the nose which produced field strengths at the stagnation point of up to 40 kilogauss. The application of the magnetic field displaced the bow shock upstream and the stand-off distance increased by a factor of 7.5 for the condition, nondimensional parameter = 69. The experimental results were compared with theory and good agreement was obtained within the range of experimental conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Results are presented for a study of the pressure and heat-transfer distributions and force characteristics of slab delta wings of 70° sweep at Mach numbers of 6.8 and 9.6 in air and 18 in helium. The wings had cylindrical leading edges and were tested with two different noses. One was sharp in plan view and the other was a tangent sphere with the same diameter as the cylindrical leading edge. Simple approaches to predicting the heat transfer are shown to be successful if the flow pattern peculiar to the angle-of-attack range under consideration is taken into account.

The investigation was conducted at a Mach number and Reynolds number per foot of 3.88 and 16,700,000, respectively. Experimental heat transfer data, determined by a transient heat transfer technique, were obtained for both heated and cooled base conditions. A series of three models were used, permitting the measurement of an average value of base heat transfer, as well as the angular and radial variations. The experimental data obtained in the investigation were compared with published experimental data and with recently published correlating parameters for both base heating and base cooling. (Author).
