In the Islamic world these could be seen as clashing with Islam's central message -- total surrender to God's will, and its foremost principle -- God's supreme and unmediated authority. Yet history reveals that Muslim societies developed different views towards engaging with the supernatural, ranging from plain acceptance to utter condemnation. Spanning from Morocco to China and the 12th to the 20th century, the books, vessels, garments and jewellery showcased in Power and Protection: Islamic Art and the Supernatural present divinatory and talismanic arts as intellectual resources and founts of artistic inspiration. By reflecting the daily fears and hopes of lower and upper classes alike, they also reveal how the human quest for protection and good luck has often overlapped with the belief in God's all-powerfulness"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings together a series of essays about art in Hong Kong written over the last ten years, with the intention of offering a personal chronicle of the Hong Kong art world during a time of great change. Many of the essays concern themselves with the work of local artists, but Western and Chinese artists whose works have been exhibited in Hong Kong during this period are also discussed. In addition to a consideration of particular artists and works of art, there are also essays which engage with debates that have been taking place in Hong Kong concerning curatorship and various arts policy issues. Fully illustrated and written in a straightforward style, Art and Place is one of the first serious attempts to evaluate the art of Hong Kong. It should be of use to anyone interested in the cultural life of one of Asia's leading cities.

Book excerpt: This book considers urban development in China, highlighting links between China’s history and civilization and the rapid evolution of its urban forms. It explores the early days of urban dwelling in China, progressing to an analysis of residential environments in the industrial age. It also examines China’s modern and postmodern architecture, considered as derivative or lacking spiritual meaning or personality, and showcases how China's traditional culture underpins the emergence of China’s modern cities. Focusing on the notion of “courtyard spirit” in China, it offers a study of the urban public squares central to Chinese society, and examines the disruption of the traditional Square model and the rise and growth of new architectural models.

Book excerpt: In Eighteen Lectures on Dunhuang, Rong Xinjiang provides an accessible overview of Dunhuang studies, an academic field that emerged following the discovery of a medieval monastic library at the Mogao caves near Dunhuang. The manuscripts were hidden in a cave at the beginning of the 11th century and remained unnoticed until 1900, when a Daoist monk accidentally found them and subsequently sold most of them to foreign explorers and scholars. The availability of this unprecedented amount of first-hand material from China’s middle period provided a stimulus for a number of scholarly fields both in China and the West. Rong Xinjiang’s book provides, for the first time in English, a convenient summary of the history of Dunhuang studies and its contribution to scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly illustrated with 200 black-and-white and 32 color plates, this stimulating collection surveys the full range of 20th-century Chinese painting, covering all the schools and major artists, both within the People's Republic and elsewhere. Chinese artists now draw their inspirations from an amazing variety of subjects--airplanes and automobiles, Vietnamese refugees and Beijing opera, ancient cave murals and historical figures--and they have developed new techniques and formats that have greatly expanded the range of Chinese paintings. Their work reveals how traditional techniques, when reintroduced into unexpected contexts, can bring about strikingly new results. In light of the tremendous variety of artistic impulses and stylistic approaches that exist in 20th-century Chinese painting, and the rapidity with which these changes have occurred, it is quite remarkable that China's artistic tradition has not only been able to sustain itself, but continues to evolve in new and exciting directions. This beautiful volume captures the vibrancy of a national art that is stunning in its complexity and diversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visually stunning book focuses on the rebirth of Chinese art in the twentieth century under the influence of Western art and culture. Michael Sullivan, recognized throughout the world as a leading scholar of Chinese art, vividly documents the conflicting pulls of traditional and Western values on Chinese art and provides 364 illustrations, in color and black-and-white, to show the great range of artistic expression and the historical processes that occurred within various movements. A substantial biographical index of twentieth-century Chinese artists is a valuable addition to the text. Sullivan discusses artists and their work against China's background of oppression and relaxation, despair and hope. He expertly conveys the diverse and at times bizarre intertwining of Chinese cultural history and art during this century. Included are the intense debates between traditionalists and reformers, the creation of the first art schools, and the birth of the idea—shocking in ethnocentric China—that art is a world language that obliterates all frontiers. The scholarly traditions of classical Chinese painting, the belated discovery of Western modernism, the artistic upheaval under Communism, and China's rethinking of the very nature of art all have a place in Sullivan's fascinating history. Michael Sullivan has known many of the major figures in China's modern art movement of the 1930s and 1940s and has also gained the confidence of younger artists who rose to prominence following the 1979 "Peking Spring." This long-awaited book—richly documented and abundantly illustrated—is a capstone to Sullivan's work and will be enthusiastically welcomed by art lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: In 1933, Shih-I Hsiung (1902–1991), a student from China, met with Allardyce Nicoll, a Shakespearean scholar at the University of London, to discuss his PhD study in English drama. After learning about Hsiung’s interest and background, Nicoll suggested that he should consider studying Chinese drama for his dissertation and writing a play of a Chinese subject. Hsiung took the advice to heart and set out to write Lady Precious Stream, a play based on a classical Beijing opera. In six weeks, the writing was completed; six months later, the manuscript was accepted for publication by Methuen; and not long after, Little Theater in London agreed to produce the play, which ran for 900 successive shows. The phenomenal success turned Hsiung into stardom all at once: he became the first Chinese to write and direct a West End play in England; in 1936, the play had its Broadway premiere and subsequent performances in Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and other U.S. cities; and it has been produced and staged in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia ever since. Following the success of Lady Precious Stream, Hsiung translated into English the Chinese classic The Romance of the Western Chamber; in addition, he wrote a number of plays, novels, and essays, in both English and Chinese, as well as the biography The Life of Chiang Kai-shek.Shih-I Hsiung: A Glorious Showman unfolds the transnational and transcultural life experience of an extraordinary showman: a literary master, a theater man, and a social actor bold and impassioned on socio-cultural stages. Hsiung introduced English and American literature to readers in China through his translation works in the 1920s and early 1930s. After his arrival in England, he began writing in English for audiences not familiar with the Chinese culture. His works were known for their originality, humor, and a deep sense of cultural and historical engagement. Later in his life when he was residing in Hong Kong, he was devoted to education and was also active in Chinese literary and theater circles.
