Book excerpt: According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adults ages 18-29 are among those with the greatest number of alcohol related problems. In the past year, over 3 million college students drove under the influence of alcohol, and 400,000 students had unprotected sex as a result of alcohol intoxication. This research examined the association between actual and perceived drinking norms among college students, as well as the association between binge drinking and other risky behaviors. Analyses used cross-sectional data from the Spring, 2011, administration of the National College Health Assessment II at UNC Charlotte. Nearly 75% (n=827) of students reported non-binge drinking behavior, but 53.7% perceived that the typical student binge drank. After adjustment for other factors, students who perceived other students to be excessive binge drinkers had 4.75 (95% CI: 1.19, 18.91) times the odds of a recent binge drinking episode themselves. Binge drinkers had 7.77 (95%CI: 1.74, 34.69) and 3.86 (95%CI: 1.29, 11.57) times the odds of driving after drinking and having unprotected sex, respectively. Excessive binge drinkers had 7.30 (95%CI: 1.48, 36.00) and 6.56 (95%CI: 2.01, 21.38) times the odds of the same behaviors, respectively. In order to reduce the gap between actual and perceived drinking norms, the campus Social Norm Campaign should be further explored and regularly evaluated. In order to develop supplementary intervention strategies, further investigations should identify additional unknown factors that influence students" alcohol consumption.

Book excerpt: The present study was designed to examine relationships between drinking norms and alcohol use among college students while considering the role of both interpersonal and intrapersonal moderators of this relationship. College students (N=127) who drank at least once during the previous three months reported on their alcohol use, their attitudes toward drinking, perceived drinking norms, relational self-construal, and demographics. Detailed information pertaining to participants' drinking and support social networks were elicited via an interview. It was hypothesized that perceived norms would be related to drinking such that norms reflecting higher levels of alcohol use would be related to more alcohol consumption. This hypothesis was supported. Additionally, the direct and moderating influence of social network characteristics (i.e., size, density, functioning) on alcohol use were examined in a series of regression models. In models not including the influence of norms, drinking networks that were larger were predictive of higher levels of alcohol use. Closeness with network members predicted higher levels of binge drinking. When norms were included in the models, only minimal support was found for the moderating influence of social network characteristics. Satisfaction within the drinking network moderated the influence of norms on alcohol use such that for males, there was stronger normative influence for those high in satisfaction. Relational self-construal was hypothesized as an intrapersonal moderator of norms. This was true for males only, such that higher levels of relational self-construal were related to stronger norm conformity. The present study represents the first step in understanding the complex impact of social networks on alcohol use among college students.

Book excerpt: This research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two different types of alcohol education interventions on the attitudes about alcohol consumption in college, knowledge about alcohol, and self-reported alcohol consumption behavior of college students. The educational interventions were a student-centered CD-Rom interactive program, and a teacher-centered motivational speaker. Each intervention took approximately 60 minutes. The research was conducted at a small public university in Northern New York. Nine classes with a total enrollment of 360 students were randomly selected for the research. The demographic makeup of the sample was similar to that of the overall university population, including gender, class level, membership in Greek organizations and age. Three classes were randomly assigned to the CD-Rom program, three classes were randomly assigned to hear a motivational speaker, and three classes were randomly assigned to a control group. The instrument used was the Student Alcohol Questionnaire (SAQ). Students in all classes completed the SAQ four weeks after the Fall, 1999 semester began. The interventions were conducted the following week. The SAQ was administered again four, eight and twelve weeks post-intervention. Two measures of alcohol consumption behavior were used: A continuous variable measure of both amount of alcohol consumed and consequences related to intoxication, and a dichotomous variable for "heavy drinking," which is defined as more than five drinks in a row at least once a week. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to test for differences across attitude, knowledge and behavior and bivariate combinations of these outcome variables by group. No statistically significant differences were found on any of the post-interventions measures for any combination of aftitude, knowledge or behavior. Analysis of covariance was used to test for behavior difference alone, using the pre-intervention questionnaire results as the covariate. No statistically significant differences were found for behavior alone. Multiple regression techniques were used to determine if alcohol consumption behavior, as measured on the continuous scale, could be predicted by gender, grade point average, class level or religion. Gender (p .000) was the only predictor variable that was statistically significant, with men students consuming more alcohol than women students.

Book excerpt: Social norms play a pivotal role in both explaining the development and maintenance of collegiate alcohol use and creating prevention and intervention programs targeted at reducing heavy drinking. By theoretically functioning as a model of normative and popular behavior, descriptive and injunctive norms are consistently associated with college drinking. In the current study, we endeavored to test the mechanisms through which social norms influence drinking by experimentally manipulating normative beliefs. Participants (N = 181) were assigned to one of nine conditions in a 3 (descriptive norms (DN): positive, negative, none) x 3 (injunctive norms (IN): positive, negative, none) experimental design. Norms exposure occurred within a series of three same-gender Internet-based chat room sessions. The norms manipulation was partially successful in creating groups with distinct normative beliefs, with the no norms groups failing to maintain a neutral norm for both descriptive and injunctive norms. Consequently, no descriptive norms groups were combined with positive descriptive norms groups and no injunctive norms groups were combined with negative injunctive norms groups, resulting in a 2 (DN: positive, negative) x 2 (IN: positive, negative) design for analyses. Overall findings for type (DN, IN) and valence (positive, negative) of norms indicated that participants globally reduced descriptive norms and drinking from pre-chat room to post-chat room, regardless of the type or valence of the manipulation, indicating that there were no experimental effects by condition. Whereas drinking appeared to stabilize at post-chat room, descriptive norms continued to decrease by three-month follow-up. Injunctive norms and personal attitudes about alcohol use also decreased by three-month follow-up. Although we were unsuccessful in changing normative beliefs in expected directions, these findings have important implications for college prevention and intervention programs for reducing drinking. The lack of experimental effects suggested that changing norms may be more complex than previously hypothesized and that changes in norms may not result in changes in drinking, which is the purported mechanism of change in norms-based interventions. These results further suggested that continued research is necessary to provide empirical support for a causal link between norms and drinking and that alternative explanations for the association between norms and drinking need to be considered.

However, not all interventions have been successful, and the campus environment may be responsible for the variable reactions that students have to these interventions. Three articles were written to investigate the nature and utility of social norms interventions in an environment where alcohol use is relatively low. The first article details an online social norms intervention implemented on a low-use campus. Results suggest that if adapted to the campus culture, a social norms approach to reducing alcohol use could be successful in this unique environment. The second article investigates the impact of social norms in the form of censuring alcohol use. Using the theory of reasoned action, the study shows how alcohol use differs for those exposed to different types of norms, and how attitude toward being censured may change whether exposure to a particular social norm is indicative of decreased alcohol use. The third article is a process evaluation of the social norms intervention in a unique environment. It reviews difficulties encountered in implementing an intervention as well as recommendations for future online approaches to intervention implementation.

Book excerpt: Self-monitoring was examined as a moderator of the effectiveness of persuasive messages for reducing college student binge drinking. Low self-monitors tend to be influenced by their personal values and attitudes, while high self-monitors tend to be influenced by the behavior of those around them. Via a website simulation, college students were presented with one of three types of anti-binge drinking messages: a self-schema message, which highlighted how responsible drinking is consistent with the message recipient's personal values and attitudes; a social norms message, which explained that most college students drink less than one might think they do; or a control message, which stated in general terms that people can experience a variety of problems from binge drinking. Overall intended drinking behavior in the self-schema message condition was almost identical to that of the social norms message condition, both of which were lower than drinking intentions in the control message condition. When presented with a self-schema matched message, low self-monitors intended to drink less alcohol than did high self-monitors, but these means were not significantly different. However, high self-monitors intended to drink significantly less than did low self-monitors when presented with a social norms message. The results suggest that self-schema matched messages may be effective at reducing binge drinking for most students, and that social norms messages may be equally as effective but only for high self-monitors.
