Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two different fluency-based reading interventions as determined by fluency progress monitoring rates of participants and teacher-perceived usefulness toward the progression towards the participants' grade-level goals as measured on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) standardized test. This study was precipitated by the recent adoption of a Response to Intervention (RtI) approach in the school setting. This approach is designed to increase student achievement of students who are "below," "at," or "beyond" grade level expectations. This study specifically looked at students who are categorized as "below" grade level in reading achievement. The Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) intervention was utilized with 6th and 7th grade students during the first research period (Study 1) and "The Six-Minute Solution" was used with a group of 5th and 6th grade students during the second research period (Study 2). Results indicated the interventions did have an overall positive effect on the fluency rates and the standardized tests scores achieved by the students in this study.

Book excerpt: This research study examined two intervention programs, Read Naturally (computer-assisted) and The Six-Minute Solution (teacher-guided), for the purpose of finding their effects on reading fluency with 3rd grade students at an elementary school. The participants were from two separate third grade classrooms, randomly assigned to one of the two intervention programs. There were five participants in the Read Naturally program and four participants in The Six-Minute Solution program. Fluency, the word correct per minute (WCPM), was based on assessments through AIMSweb R-CBM fluency probes. The data was analyzed to determine which program has a greater effect on fluency. Results from posttest scores indicated that after four weeks of intervention, there was an increase in fluency in both programs. However, the Read Naturally program showed a significantly higher rate of WCPM (words correct per minute). Results show that repeated reading programs help increase reading fluency. Educators need to see the significance in repeated reading programs and the positive effect it can have on increasing reading fluency. A sample lesson plan is appended.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.

Badenhop and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Reading has long been regarded as the gateway to self-directed education. As students progress from the early to middle elementary years, curricula expect that they will transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Too often, however, students are left behind because they struggle to develop reading proficiency before this transition. With the understanding that they require early and intense intervention to ensure later academic success, finding the most effective and efficient methods to foster reading proficiency among struggling readers is critical. This study examined the differential effects of three variations of repeated readings (with traditional whole word drill, with word retell, and with both traditional whole word drill and word retell) on core literacy components among delayed third grade readers. After random assignment to these three conditions, student performance was analyzed on the constructs of oral reading fluency, oral reading accuracy, reading comprehension as measured by word retell and comprehension questions, and intervention efficiency. Findings indicated that there were few significant differences among the three conditions. Results did indicate that students in the traditional whole word drill and word retell condition improved significantly more in oral reading accuracy from initial to repeated reading than did students in the word retell condition. Results and limitations of the study are discussed, and directions for future research are recommended.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has traditionally been viewed as a goal in reading that is taught and mastered in the early elementary grades. However, over the past decade, reading fluency has come to be seen as a critical contributor to reading proficiency and reading difficulty beyond the primary grades. Unfortunately, there is limited research focusing on the fluency needs and fluency interventions for the upper elementary and middle school students. This study helps to fill the gap in the literature by employing a quasi-experimental design to investigate the effects of the intervention repeated reading on accuracy, rate, prosody, comprehension, and motivation to read among 5th and 6th grade English Language Arts students in a small K-8 school in Massachusetts. After assessing accuracy, rate, prosody, comprehension, and motivation to read with a pretest, implementing the intervention repeated reading for a twelve-week period, and reassessing accuracy, rate, prosody, comprehension, and motivation to read with a posttest, a one-way ANCOVA was used (after testing necessary assumptions) to compare the adjusted means of the reading performance variables. The findings indicate mixed results regarding the impact of repeated reading on reading achievement. This study showed students who received the intervention repeated reading scored significantly higher on accuracy, rate, prosody, and motivation to read, however, there was not a significant difference found in comprehension scores. The results provide confirming evidence that the reading intervention repeated reading assists in the development of upper elementary and middle school students overall reading achievement.
Book Synopsis The Impact of the Accelerated Reader Software on the Reading Achievement of Third Grade Students in a Rural Southeastern Mississippi School District by : Suzanne McKee Waddell
Download or read book The Impact of the Accelerated Reader Software on the Reading Achievement of Third Grade Students in a Rural Southeastern Mississippi School District written by Suzanne McKee Waddell and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine if a significant difference existed based on the reading achievement of 3rd grade students as measured by the Mississippi Curriculum Test Reading Scaled Score of those students who utilized the Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader Software Management Program and those who did not participate in the program. The impact of gender and ethnicity on reading achievement and the relationship between the STAR Test for Assessment of Reading and the Mississippi Curriculum Test (MCT) as measures of reading achievement were also studied. The findings indicate students who participated in the Accelerated Reading Program achieved significantly higher reading scores than students who did not participate in the program. Within the Accelerated Reading Group, Caucasians earned significantly higher scores than the African-American/Other group. Female participants scored significantly higher scores than males. There was a strong association between the scores students on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment and the Mississippi Curriculum Test. The findings of this study indicated that gender, ethnicity, and the Accelerated Reading Program impacted MCT scores. There existed a strong association between scores on the Mississippi Curriculum Test and the scores on the STAR Test for Reading Assessment. Conclusions that emerged from the study suggest that Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader software when used in conjunction with the regular reading series seemed to have a positive impact on reading achievement. Recommendations for future research include investigating a possible gender bias in literature that could impact reading achievement and the impact of ethnicity on reading achievement.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of student choice of three reading interventions, listening while reading, repeated reading, and repeated reading plus retell, on reading fluency and delayed reading comprehension with elementary students with reading difficulties. The researcher used a single-subject alternating treatment design with a return to baseline phase. The participants were four fourth grade students from a rural school district, who demonstrated below-grade level reading comprehension skills. Participants’ reading comprehension of expository text was measured through multiple-choice questions. Visual analysis and descriptive statistics were used to examine the effects of listening while reading, repeated reading, and repeated reading plus retell. Results indicate that reading comprehension and reading fluency improved across each of the three interventions with highest gains seen in the intervention the students preferred.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After pre assessing students in a third grade classroom, the researcher noted four students, scoring below the 20th Percentile on the reading portion of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) exam, fall, 2008, in a pilot study. As the researcher further assessed these students, it was noted that these students lacked fluency and vocabulary skills. Focusing on fluency combined with individual, vocabulary instruction, the researcher individualized each of the students' reading program within the regular education classroom. Each of the four students was working at their current level of reading, entering the third grade and progressing throughout the school year. The researcher used a combination of the Power Reading program and coupled it with individual, vocabulary strategies to assist readers with fluency and comprehension. As their reading progressed, students were challenged to next levels. Data was analyzed using the NWEA assessment, Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessment and Kansas State Reading Assessments during the course of the school year to mark progress. All four students in year one exited the bottom quartile of the NWEA, gained two reading levels according the Houghton Mifflin Leveled Reading Assessments and scored in the top twelve percent of the Kansas State Reading Assessments. The pilot study was replicated in the school year, 2009-2010, Year Two, with ten students with similar needs.
Book Synopsis Fluency and Reading Comprehension in Typical Readers and Dyslexics Readers by : Simone A. Capellini
Download or read book Fluency and Reading Comprehension in Typical Readers and Dyslexics Readers written by Simone A. Capellini and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading involves decoding and comprehension components and, to become efficient, it requires a large number of cognitive and linguistic processes. Among those, the phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, the decoding, the fluency, the lexical development and the text comprehension development. The reading comprehension is strongly related with the development of vocabulary, oral language, linguistic skills, memory skills and ability to make inferences, and the world experiences of each individual. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting difficulties in learning how to read. The difficulty using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme and phoneme to the word reading construction characterizes the dyslexia, which is a specific learning disorder with a neurological source. These difficulties presented by students with dyslexia interfere in their learning process impairing the learning development. Knowing and following the reading development and its processes, as well as obtaining the punctuation of fluency abilities and students comprehension allow us to understand what happens when the student presents difficulties to read. This could help in the identification of learning disabilities and in the development of intervention programs.
