Book Synopsis Block Printed Textiles by : Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project
Download or read book Block Printed Textiles written by Milwaukee WPA Handicraft Project and published by . This book was released on 1935 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The block prints included in this series were designed by artists on the Milwaukee Handicraft Project and printed under their direction by unskilled women workers. These designs were made for the covers of books bound by the bookbinding department of the project and for wallhangings and draperies printed for state, county, and city institutions. There soon developed such a demand for the individual prints to be used for educational purposes that this collection was made up. It is the hope of the Milwaukee State Teacher's College, sponsor of the project, and the project supervisors that this collection of hand-blocked printed paper and textiles will prove of value in acquainting students with the limitless possibilities of this medium."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pinson Mounds: Middle Woodland Ceremonialism in the Midsouth is a comprehensive overview and reinterpretation of the largest Middle Woodland mound complex in the Southeast. Located in west Tennessee about ten miles south of Jackson, the Pinson Mounds complex includes at least thirteen mounds, a geometric earthen embankment, and contemporary short-term occupation areas within an area of about four hundred acres. A unique feature of Pinson Mounds is the presence of five large, rectangular platform mounds from eight to seventy-two feet in height. Around A.D. 100, Pinson Mounds was a pilgrimage center that drew visitors from well beyond the local population and accommodated many distinct cultural groups and people of varied social stations. Stylistically nonlocal ceramics have been found in virtually every excavated locality, all together representing a large portion of the Southeast. Along with an overview of this important and unique mound complex, Pinson Mounds also provides a reassessment of roughly contemporary centers in the greater Midsouth and Lower Mississippi Valley and challenges past interpretations of the Hopewell phenomenon in the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Leading the way describes how the men and women of Air Force civil engineering have provided the basing that enabled the Air Force to fly, fight, and win. This book depicts how engineers built hundreds of bases during World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. At the same time, these engineers operated and maintained a global network of enduring, peacetime bases. It describes the engineers' role in special projects such as the ballistic missile program, the Arctic early warning sites, and construction of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Using hundreds of sources, this detailed narrative tells the story of how civil engineers have been organized, trained, equipped, and employed for more than 100 years. From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan, civil engineers have forged an unmatched record of success and built a solid foundation for today's Air Force."--Back cover.
