Using a rigorous phenomenological research methodology, the "lived experiences" of seven teachers successfully adapting pedagogy with Web 2.0 tools were examined giving an in-depth qualitative analysis of how and why teachers integrate Web 2.0 to change pedagogy. The research validated the use of TPACK as a framework as well as the use of phenomenological research methodology in researching about educational technology. A phenomenological approach examined the "lived experiences" of seven secondary teachers through in-depth interviews giving this study an in-depth qualitative analysis of teachers and technology. The widening digital divide between teachers and students causes a barrier for educators trying to reach their students. Students are raised with pervasive technology, while teachers are using Web 2.0 tools on a personal basis, but may not yet be successful in adapting their pedagogy to effectively use the tools for instruction. The ease of use and user friendly interface of Web 2.0 tools makes them a possible catalyst to help teachers change their pedagogy. Past teacher professional development focused on providing teachers with the technical knowledge to bridge the gap, but has fallen short of causing the paradigm shift needed to change pedagogy to use current tools effectively. The Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework has been used in professional development and proven to lead to an effective change in teachers' pedagogy. Most current research has examined both the TPACK framework and Web 2.0 tools, but few researchers have looked at the teacher perspective on the issue. The findings of this study indicated the types of Web 2.0 tools and how they are being utilized, the reasons why teachers are using the tools for instruction, and the technological factors influencing their use. Lastly, the impact their TPACK had on their success in adapting pedagogy points to the need for support either through professional development or support from colleagues. The "lived experiences" of the teachers provided implications for professional development assisting in making the change process easier for teachers, administrators, and students. This study provided an in-depth look at the relationship between in-service teachers, their TPACK, and how it relates to educational technology. In addition, this study demonstrated the rigorousness of phenomenology as a primary research method for educational technology.

Book excerpt: This report presents findings from a two-year investigation of the ways in which Web 2.0 tools and social networking technologies are being used to support teaching and learning in classrooms across the United States. With funding from Intel[R], the Education Development Center's Center for Children and Technology (EDC/CCT) interviewed or visited over 30 educators in 22 different schools throughout the country as they employed these tools in their classrooms in innovative ways. The authors also spoke with and observed a number of students in these schools. Over the two years of their research, the sample of teachers was drawn from the Intel[R] Teach Essentials course and the network of master teachers and training agencies that has grown up around that program. Through this network of educators, the authors sent out a request for volunteers to teachers that are experimenting with Web 2.0 technologies in their classrooms. During the first year they recruited 12 individual teachers, but for the second year they targeted districts with larger groups of teachers experimenting with Web 2.0 and were able to reach 27 educators across three districts. This report is divided into two sections: (1) a summary of some of the most frequent Web 2.0 applications they encountered and (2) a discussion of different themes and issues concerning the use of Web 2.0 tools in classrooms that emerged from all the interviews and visits. Appended are: (1) Tools that create or support a virtual learning environment; (2) Tools that support communication and cultivate relationships; (3) Resources to support teaching and learning; and (4) Tools enabling students to create artifacts representing what they are learning. Analysis of the data found that teachers reported improvement of engagement, motivation, and comprehension with their students when using technology. Teachers also valued the role of the coach for support to brainstorm ideas, co-plan lessons, co-teach lessons, and model technology tools in the classroom. New roles for students, teachers, and coaches emerged: student as expert, resource gatherer, and technical assistant. Effective professional development methods and strategies included hands-on learning and co-planning with teachers.
