Book excerpt: Government budget constraints had forced the Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) at a military installation to work with less than the normal number of staff. A Program Proposal was developed previously that had determined that a learning gap existed in the researcher's work environment at a military installation. To counter this gap, Learning Tasks were developed to determine the best curriculum for dispatchers to instruct firefighters in becoming 911 Dispatchers when the need became available. The purpose of this study was to develop Learning Tasks to determine what firefighters would need to do to learn the content and accomplish achievement-based objectives. The data for this study were drawn from the dispatchers and firefighters at the fire department where the training would need to take place. The population for this study came from the EDC dispatchers and firefighters. A literature review was conducted through Google Scholar and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) where primary and secondary sources were located to support the curriculum. Results of the literature review and learning tasks indicated a very comprehensive and effective curriculum. The author suggests that the results provide for a very effective curriculum if collaboration exists continuously between dispatchers and firefighters.

Nor has research been conducted to contrast thelearning style preferences of novice undergraduate students with those of graduatestudents, and educators who construct and/or teach in tertiary e-learning environments.The aim of this study was to investigate preferred styles of learning and how these relateto e-learning environments both qualitatively and quantitatively. Three research cohortswere of interest in this research, and following extensive invitations to participate in theresearch, forty-five undergraduate e-learners, nine graduate e-learners, and twenty-eighteducators working in e-learning environments participated. Participants completed tworesearch instruments. Quantitative data was obtained from the learning styles instrumentIndex of Learning Styles (ILS) (Felder & Soloman, 1991, 1994). The ILS assessesvariations in individual learning style preferences across four dimensions or domains:Information Processing (active to reflective learning preferences), Information Perception(sensing/factual to intuitive/theoretical learning preferences), Information Reception (visualto verbal learning preferences), and Information Understanding (sequential to globallearning preferences). Participants also completed a survey questionnaire which gatheredfurther quantitative data (demographic data) and qualitative feedback (extended openendedresponses of their self-perceptions of the impact of learning styles within theirspecific e-learning environment in addition to snapshots of the participant's e-learningenvironment).In summary, the statistical analysis of the quantitative data discerned that a mildpreference existed across all three cohorts for active learning environments. A moderatelystrong preference existed across all three cohorts for visual learning environments. Astatistically significant difference, however, was recorded in the data betweenundergraduate e-learners and the other cohorts on the two remaining learning styledomains. Undergraduate e-learners scored a mild preference towards sensing (or factual)learning environments, while graduate e-learners and e-educators both scored amoderate preference towards intuitive (or theoretical) learning design. Additionally,undergraduate e-learners scored a mild preference for sequentially-structures e-learningenvironments, while graduate e-learners and e-educators both scored a mild preferencefor global e-learning designs.The results of this study indicated that learning style preferences betweengraduate e-learners and educators were aligned. The qualitative responses provided richdata on the impact of learning styles within e-learning environments. These findingssuggest that learning styles do appear to be a consideration for both learners andeducators in terms of learning (from the e-learner's perspective), and in relation to theconception, design, and creation of effective e-learning environments (from the educator'sperspective). It concludes that in e-learning environments, just as in any other educationalcontext, style does matter, and that a one-size-fits-all approach to learning design is atbest inappropriate. The findings support a balanced multimodal approach to e-learningwhich is consistent with today's media-rich world. The thesis concludes by recommendingkey principles for educators to consider in designing for, and teaching in, e-learningenvironments.
