Book excerpt: "This is an ethnohistory of the Asian and Pacific Islander lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people's (APLBT) movement of San Francisco and its origins in the race, class, gender and sexuality conflicts of the social movements of the 1960s. This study is based on qualitative interviews of community activists and a critical review of historical documents of the Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, Latino, Native American and white civil rights, community empowerment, women's and queer movements. The early Civil Rights Movement and Gay Rights Movement were specifically examined for interpersonal race, class, gender and sexuality problems and how each movement challenged racism, sexism, heterosexism and homophobia in society. In particular, the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a militant interracial youth organization in the South, was wracked with problematic internal organizational problems and interpersonal conflicts that readily fell along race, class, gender and sexuality fault lines. After repeated confrontations with racial violence and disillusionment with whites, liberalism and non-violence, SNCC advocated Black Power and separatism in 1966. Afterwards, the movements divided along racial lines, followed by further splits along gender and sexuality differences. On both sides of the racial divide, problems of racism, tokenism, misogyny and homophobia either alienated or outright excluded gay people of color as full citizens of these movements. A distinct gay people of color movement developed at the margins by the late 1970s. The APLBT movement emerged from within this broader gay people of color movement by the late 1980s. For the next ten years. the APLBT community focused internally to develop a network and movement that valued both gay and API identities and communities. San Francisco, which has large API and gay communities, was studied because of its historical role in building various pan-API and specific ethnic, language, age, sexual orientation and gender identity organizations at the local, national and international levels"--Leaves xi-xii

Book excerpt: Abstract: Very little is known about individuals who identify as LGBTQ from Asian and Pacific Island descent despite the fact that Asian Pacific Americans are the fastest growing racial group in the United States. Parallel to the lack of knowledge is the lack of services for this marginalized population. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to write a grant proposal for a supportive therapeutic program for this population. The literature review indicated that Asian Pacific LGBTQ individuals encounter unique experiences compared to White counterparts. The review also explained the links between challenges and their impact on LGBTQ individuals' well-being. The negative impact from heterosexism experiences is compounded by racial minority stressors. The actual submission of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

Book excerpt: In gay bars and nightclubs across America, and in gay-oriented magazines and media, the buff, macho, white gay man is exalted as the ideal—the most attractive, the most wanted, and the most emulated type of man. For gay Asian American men, often viewed by their peers as submissive or too ‘pretty,’ being sidelined in the gay community is only the latest in a long line of racially-motivated offenses they face in the United States.Repeatedly marginalized by both the white-centric queer community that values a hyper-masculine sexuality and a homophobic Asian American community that often privileges masculine heterosexuality, gay Asian American men largely have been silenced and alienated in present-day culture and society. In Geisha of a Different Kind, C. Winter Han travels from West Coast Asian drag shows to the internationally sought-after Thai kathoey, or “ladyboy,” to construct a theory of queerness that is inclusive of the race and gender particularities of the gay Asian male experience in the United States. Through ethnographic observation of queer Asian American communities and Asian American drag shows, interviews with gay Asian American men, and a reading of current media and popular culture depictions of Asian Americans, Han argues that gay Asian American men, used to gender privilege within their own communities, must grapple with the idea that, as Asians, they have historically been feminized as a result of Western domination and colonization, and as a result, they are minorities within the gay community, which is itself marginalized within the overall American society. Han also shows that many Asian American gay men can turn their unusual position in the gay and Asian American communities into a positive identity. In their own conception of self, their Asian heritage and sexuality makes these men unique, special, and, in the case of Asian American drag queens, much more able to convey a convincing erotic femininity. Challenging stereotypes about beauty, nativity, and desirability, Geisha of a Different Kind makes a major intervention in the study of race and sexuality in America.
