This book was released on 1996 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is a major problem in the spinal cord injury (SCI) population. Patients with a SCI often suffer from either centrally-mediated pain (neurogenic pain) or peripherally-mediated pain (musculoskeletal pain). The physical therapy technique known as TENS is often used to treat SCI related pain problems. However, the efficacy of TENS in SCI has yet to be tested. Moreover, previous research suggests that response to TENS may in part determined by subject expectation of a potent medical treatment (Deyo et al., 1990; Langley et al., 1984). The present investigation evaluated: (1) the efficacy of TENS in the SCI population, (2) whether or not patient treatment expectancy influences outcome, and (3) whether the aforementioned factors differentially influence centrally and peripherally mediated pain. Findings suggest that treatment expectation concomitant to TENS treatment may be important in potentiating reductions in distress associated with pain across different types of pain. Additionally, positive treatment expectation may be effective on directly reducing peripherally-mediated pain, but not centrally-mediated pain. The findings are discussed in relation to current biological and psychological theories of pain modulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a technique that delivers mild electrical currents across the intact surface of the skin to reduce pain. TENS is used by practitioners throughout the world to manage painful conditions and TENS equipment can be purchased by the general public so that they can self-administer treatment. There are thousands of experimental and clinical research studies published on TENS and related techniques yet there is uncertainty about the best way to administer TENS in clinical practice. This is because currents used during TENS can be administered in a variety of ways and the findings of research studies have been inconclusive. This book provides guidance on how best to use TENS based on an evaluation of current research evidence. The book covers what TENS is, how it works, and safe and appropriate clinical techniques for many conditions including chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis and cancer pain. It also offers solutions to the problems faced by researchers when trying to design clinical trials on TENS. Accessibility written, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) provides a comprehensive coverage of research issues and findings about TENS and will be essential reading for healthcare professionals, practitioners and students.

Book excerpt: Abundant evidence indicates that TENS can be used effectively to alleviate certain pain syndromes. For patients suffering from chronic musculo-skeletal pain in particular, TENS offers an alternative means of pain management. This book addresses the need among physiotherapists for a practical manual on the application of this relatively new technique. Numerous illustrations provide guidelines for the choice of stimulation parameters, the selection of electrode positions, as well as other aspects related to technique. A brief introduction to the neurophysiological mechanisms of pain and the pain-relieving effects of TENS is also given. These special features make this comprehensive presentation of particular interest to physiotherapists and clinicians actively engaged in the management of patients suffering from pain.

Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on central pain, a field that is largely obscured by lack of knowledge among pain professionals at all levels, including high-end pain centers. As a matter of fact, central pain, classified as a form of neuropathic pain, remains too often a scourge for those affected due to the ignorance of pain therapists worldwide and enduring misconceptions at the academic level. By weighing up the relevant evidence, the authors aim to remedy the situation by providing clear-cut, no-nonsense, unbiased and directly applicable clinical information. The clinically sound guidelines presented here are based on the authors’ twenty years of treating patients and conducting research in the field. The book will be an invaluable guide for neurologists, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, pain therapists as well as physiotherapists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This clinically focused book aims to cover for the first time all of the neurological aspects relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of spinal cord disease. Furthermore, innovative neurorestorative therapeutic strategies - aiming for repair of the damaged spinal cord and/or reorganization of the remaining nervous system - with significant potential for translation into clinical routine are presented. The book covers a comprehensive list of topics, including epidemiology, neuroanatomy, etiology of compressive and non-compressive spinal cord injury, imaging, neurophysiology, neurological sequelae, and complications with emphasis on dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Both clinically established and preclinical therapies are discussed in detail. The book is suited for trainees and practicing clinicians including neurologists, spine surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, neuroradiologists, and occupational/physical therapists; it will also be of value to neuroscientists involved in research into spinal cord disease.
