While there is an abundant amount of research asserting the effectiveness of social stories as a social intervention strategy for children with ASD, there are also limitations of that previous research. The current study identifies three limitations of existing social story research, including: a lack of adherence to the social story guidelines published by Carol Gray (the creator of social stories), limited information reported on participants with predominant use of elementary school aged and seemingly higher functioning participants, and the inability to exhibit a causal relationship between an independent and dependent variable. In order to address these three limitations, a social story intervention aimed at increasing appropriate social behaviors was implemented using three pre-school age children with ASD. All social stories utilized throughout the study fully adhered to Carol Gray's guidelines and acted as a sole independent variable. A withdrawal design was employed and provided no evidence of an increase in appropriate behavior displayed by any of the three participants. This study utilized a mixed methods triangulation design consisting of a single subject experimental ABAB design to record the frequency of the target behavior before and after the intervention, field notes gathered during observations, and interviews with school staff members. Findings from this study yielded inconclusive results regarding the effectiveness of increasing the target behavior, seeking attention. Further research regarding effective and reliable interventions to aid in increasing positive social interactions is recommended.

Book excerpt: Social Stories are narratives written to explain a social situation, social skill, or concept to individuals with an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis or developmental disabilities. Although the main goal of a Social Story is to increase the individual's understanding of the targeted situation, skill, or concept, this intervention is implemented to increase appropriate behaviors and decrease inappropriate behaviors. Researchers have investigated the efficacy of Social Stories when applied to both increasing appropriate and decreasing inappropriate behaviors. Results to date have been contradictory both supporting Social Stories and showing the intervention to be ineffective. These conflicting results could be related to many procedural variations across studies. Additionally, few studies conducted either a functional analysis or functional behavior assessment prior to implementing a Social Story intervention when attempting to decrease behavior. This may also contribute to the contradictory evidence. It is possible, for example, that a Social Story could possibly serve as an abolishing operation for attention maintained inappropriate behaviors. By providing attention prior to the emission of the attention maintained inappropriate behavior, the value of attention could decrease and the likelihood that the individual will engage in the behavior that produces attention could decrease. This might suggest a Social Story was effective when it was the noncontingent provision of attention that produced the effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a Social Story could serve as an abolishing operation for attention maintained inappropriate behaviors if read prior to a situation in which the individual would likely engage in the target behavior. Five participants were identified as engaging in inappropriate behaviors that were possibly maintained by attention. The participants were exposed to reversal designs manipulating the temporal location of the Social Story. The latencies of the targeted behaviors were measured from a specific directive to the emission of the behavior. The initially short latencies of the target behaviors were increased for only one participant, but it is unclear what variable was responsible for this change. For the other four participants, latencies varied greatly with no discernable patterns across conditions. These findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Using a multiple baseline across participants desing, three social stories were implemented and direct observations of the participants' identified target behaviors were collected three times per week during unstructured school activities (e.g, recess). Data revealed an increase in the social communication skills of two of the three participants when the treatment was implemented. In addition, maintenance of treatment effects was observed in two participants. These data support recommendations for using social stories to teach social skills to children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders.

Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Social Stories utilising either photograph or symbol illustrations to address the target behaviours of children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Multiple single-case experiments were conducted utilising an ABA design with 10 participants, all of whom were boys attending mainstream primary schools within a West Midlands Local Authority. The children ranged in age from 5-11 and all of them had a diagnosis and a primary need in relation to ASD. Personalised Social Stories were composed for each of the participants to address a specific target behaviour that had been identified by the child and members of teaching staff. The stories were written by the researcher alongside a member of staff from the Local Authority's Autism Outreach Service and all adhered to the criteria and guidelines for construction outlined by Carol Gray (2004). The format for each of the stories was identical but for the manipulation of the illustrations. The effectiveness of the intervention was monitored using a variety of measures including a Behaviour Log recording the frequency of the target behaviour across each of the experimental phases; the Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 1997); and a Teacher / Teaching Assistant Questionnaire that had been designed by the researcher and was based on items contained within the Behaviour Intervention Rating Scale (BIRS) (Elliot & Treuting, 1991). The data obtained from these measures was analysed through the visual inspection of graphical data and the calculation of effect sizes. Discussion is provided about the suitability, reliability and validity of each of the measures and the methods of data analysis. 11 Overall the study provides evidence of the utility and effectiveness of Social Stories for addressing the target behaviours of children with a diagnosis of ASD. Furthermore it offers an original contribution to the existing literature by exploring the impact of different forms of illustration on story efficacy. 111.

These difficulties are often viewed by parents as some of the most challenging behaviors to address in their children on a daily basis (South, Ozonoff, & McMahon, 2005). One intervention that has been proposed to address transition difficulties of individuals with ASD is Social Stories. However, their effectiveness in situations involving daily school transitions remains largely unexplored, with only a limited number of studies conducted to date. Using a withdrawal (i.e., ABAB) design, this study examined the efficacy of Social Stories in addressing transition difficulties of three students with ASD and moderate intellectual disability (ID). Results suggest mixed effectiveness of Social Stories, with promising results obtained for one out of three participants. Out of the four dependent variables targeted, the intervention held promise for addressing disruptive behaviors. The effects of the intervention were minimal for on-task behaviors, and absent for latency to transition and duration of time in transition. The intervention was viewed as acceptable by teachers and by students, and was implemented with high fidelity.

While the intervention appeared effective in improving body and eye contact, staying on the topic, and disruptive behavior, overall it appeared that the social stories did not cause the change in the behavior. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the use of social stories that integrate a child's particular restricted and repetitive behaviors results in differential social outcomes compared to the use of social stories that do not integrate restricted and repetitive behaviors. A non-concurrent multiple baseline experimental design across participants was used to examine the effects of two Social Story interventions on the frequency of appropriate social behaviors made by participants in a school setting. Field notes were also completed during each day of data collection in order to document the social context, events, activities, moods and behaviors of participants associated with each data collection session. Field notes also included the researcher's thoughts, observations, and reflections on these variables. Overall, the intervention that included participants' restricted interests within the Social Story had the effect of increasing participants' appropriate social behaviors in contrast to the intervention that did not employ restricted interests. This research substantiates the principle that the restricted interests of children with ASD should not be viewed as a form of deficiency that needs to be eliminated. Rather, restricted interests should be viewed as reinforcing agents that increase children's motivation to pursue activities that involve social initiations and interactions with their peers.
