Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we assess the impacts of the Mercosul preferential trade agreement on Brazil's regional trade flows by means of a gravity model, extended to include dummy variables for Mercosul and for a Brazilian region. Using panel data, we implement the model in three different ways: a pooled cross section model, a fixed effects model and a first differences model. As in previous work by these authors, which were carried out using cross section data, our results show that the most significant regional impacts of Mercosul were on Brazil's Southern and Southeastern regions, whereas the North, Northeast and Center-West regions had much smaller impacts in the period from 1990 to 2000. This shows that these results regarding the regional impacts of Mercosul are robust, and are independent of the data structure or the type of model used.

Book Synopsis EU-MERCOSUR Interregionalism by : Mario Torres Jarrín
Download or read book EU-MERCOSUR Interregionalism written by Mario Torres Jarrín and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on EU-MERCOSUR relations from a diplomatic and trade perspective against the background of the political agreement between the two in 2019. The authors take into consideration that EU-MERCOSUR cooperation developed during recent decades has tried, on the one hand, to build a strategic partnership to respond to the main challenges of international agendas and, on the other, to incorporate in Latin American countries the European new vision of transatlantic regionalism. Starting from a historical perspective of the development of interregionalism between the EU and MERCOSUR, the book goes on to study the geopolitical impacts of Brexit, stagnation of the EU-USA relationship, the COVID-19 pandemic, and of new geopolitical players in EU-LAC interregionalism. It discusses the legal institutional framework of the EU-MERCOSUR relations and provides a comparative view of features of MERCOSUR countries vis-à-vis the European Union. The book also analyses and provides a comprehensive overview of various aspects of interregional trade in the context of the 2019 agreement. Highly topical and authored by experts in this field, this book is of interest to a wide readership in the social sciences and economics: from political sociology to international relations, diplomacy studies and international trade.
Book Synopsis Beyond Borders: The New Regionalism in Latin America by : Inter-American Development Bank
Download or read book Beyond Borders: The New Regionalism in Latin America written by Inter-American Development Bank and published by IDB. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although regional integration initiatives have a long history in the world economy, these efforts have expanded significantly since the 1990s. In Latin America and the Caribbean, a wave of regional integration initiatives has included free trade areas, customs unions, and steps towards common markets. The emergence of this "new regionalism"of trade in which global and regional forces complement one another has been driven by such factors as the opening up of economies and structural reforms. This year's edition of Economic and Social Progress in Latin America explores the dimensions of integration, macroeconomic coordination, and the effects of regional integration on productivity, market access, foreign direct investment, infrastructure and income inequality. Topics include subregional integration schemes, the multilateral trade agenda launched in Doha, initiatives such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and interregional agreements with the European Union.

Book Synopsis ASEAN-5: Further Harnessing the Benefits of Regional Integration Amid Fragmentation Risks by : Nuri Baek
Download or read book ASEAN-5: Further Harnessing the Benefits of Regional Integration Amid Fragmentation Risks written by Nuri Baek and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-09-15 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ASEAN-5 region, which comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, has benefited substantially from its integration to the world economy, particularly through trade. Rising risks of geoeconomic fragmentation could reverse some gains reaped from globalization over the past decades. In this context, advancing regional integration among ASEAN-5 members has the potential to enhance the region’s resilience against external headwinds. This paper shows that despite sizeable progress, particularly in regional trade integration, there is room to advance financial integration, which also lags trade integration in ASEAN-5. Empirical findings from the paper illustrate that a higher degree of regional financial integration could generate sizeable output gains for the region. Using firm-level data, the paper highlights that digitalization, an area where the region is thriving, can support regional integration by helping firms better integrate into global value chains, with the benefits being stronger for small and medium sized enterprises. The results also suggest that digitalization can help firms move up the value chain through the production of more sophisticated products, often coined as higher export sophistication.

Book Synopsis Asymmetric Economic Integration by : Snorri Thomas Snorrason
Download or read book Asymmetric Economic Integration written by Snorri Thomas Snorrason and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates whether the effects of economic integration differ according to the size of countries. The analysis incorporates a classification of the size of countries, reflecting the key economic characteristics of economies in order to provide an appropriate benchmark for each size group in the empirical analysis of the effects of asymmetric economic integration. The formation or extension of Preferential Trade Areas (PTAs) leads to a reduction in trade costs. This poses a critical secondary question as to the extent to which trade costs differ according to the size of countries. The extent to which membership of PTAs has an asymmetric impact on trade flow according to the size of member countries is analyzed by employing econometric tools and general equilibrium analysis, estimating both the ex-post and ex-ante effects of economic integration on the size of countries, using a data set of 218 countries, 45 of which are European. ?
