Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods are given for nondestructively inspecting rocket motor cases, nozzles, and motor-case insulation. The motor cases may be fabricated from steel, titanium, or glass-reinforced plastics and made by welding or wrapping processes. In some designs, the nozzle consists of tungsten inserts fitted in graphite heat-sink backup rings with a molybdenum sleeve shrunk over the graphite ring. The inside insulation is generally a rubber-base substance adhered to the motor case. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile properties that may be obtained in highstrength alloys for use from -423 to 4000 F are presented. Representative properties are given for high-strength alloys of the common base metals having melting points from that of Mg to that of W. The primary purpose is to illustrate the upper limits of the yield strength to density ratios for these alloys within the range of possible service temperatures. The temperature and time effects are combined in the LarsonMiller parameter for 0.2% offset yield strength or 0.2% plastic creep strain for limited creep data. The time for 0.2% offset yield strength determination is assumed as 0.01 hr. This permits use of yield-strength data from tensile tests and 0.2% plastic-creep-strain data from creep tests in the same charts. The LarsonMiller parameter may not be strictly applicable for certain alloys. In some instances, the data are for current production alloys with standard heat treatments. (Author).

Book excerpt: Propellants 113 (1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane) and 114B2 (1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane) were studied with respect to their corrosion properties with metals, plastics, and elastomers commonly used in missile applications. Related chemical and physical properties of these propellants were summarized including data on hydrolysis, thermal stability, toxicity, and impact sensitivity.

Book excerpt: A brief study of delayed fracture in a seam-welded titanium panel is summarized in this memorandum. Examination of the fracture surface with electron microscopy showed that the material cleaved, failing in a brittle manner. Although the nature of the embrittlement was not clearly defined, titanium hydride phase was suspected as a prime contributor to failure. Even though the hydrogen content of the titanium was only 65 ppm, hydride embrittlement was thought to have occurred from precipitation of hydride platelets on crystal planes oriented normal to welding stresses. Other work, briefly discussed in the memorandum, has confirmed that hydride platelets in titanium can be oriented by stress and that tensile ductility of Zircaloy (which behaves similarly with respect to hydrogen, to titanium) depends upon hydride orientation. Stress-relief annealing of welded titanium structures is recommended wherever possible to minimize embrittlement by stress-oriented hydrides. (Author).

This book was released on 1962 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There appear to be two ways in which interstitials promote brittle behavior in Groups V-A and VI-A refractory metals: (1) By locating at the grain boundaries in the form of segregates of precipitates, promoting grain-boundary rupture and crack initiation; and (2) In solid solution by inhibiting dislocation movement and reducing the resistance to crack propagation. Both embrittling effects operate in Group VI-A metals; whereas, only the latter is significant in the Group V-A at the levels of purity currently achieved. The problem of reducing the low-temperature brittleness of Group V-A metals is readily solved through the purity route. Purification of Group V-A metals to interstitial levels well below the solubility limits may be readily accomplished either in the initial purification of the base metal or during melting or consolidation. There are three possible routes to solving the problem of the embrittling effect of interstitials on the Group VI-A metals: (1) the purity route, (2) through working, and (3) through alloying (thermodynamically through strong scavengers, by additions which modify the electron bonding, and via grain-refining dispersions). (Author).
