Book excerpt: Appreciation of the natural environment is a vital step on the way to environmental sustainability. Environmental education in K-12 education plays an important role in developing ecologically literate and environmentally responsible citizens. Outdoor environmental education experiences in primary and secondary education (grades K-12) provide opportunities to generate this appreciation during the early stages of knowledge development (Sobel, 2004 and 2008). Today, many school systems struggle to achieve federal and state-mandated education goals while, by and large, US education efforts are diverging from an "ecologically literate and culturally critical citizenry" (Gruenewald and Manteaw, 2007). As the global population continues to increase, it is important for people to understand the impact of their choices on the environment. Integrating environmental education and sustainability principles into the curricula of grades K-12 can help to foster understanding and consideration of human environmental impact throughout students' lifetimes (Kozicki, 2010b). Incorporating outdoor environmental education experiences improves students' knowledge and sows the seeds for environmental sustainability. Sixth grade students participating in a meaningful watershed educational experience (MWEE) (CBP, 2010) with an outdoor education component increase their watershed knowledge. This would indicate that student learning would benefit by including an outdoor education component (Hungerford and Volk, 1990; Sebba, 1991; Yerkes and Haras, 1997; Dillon, Rickinson, Teamey, Morris, Choi, Sanders, and Benefield, 2006; UNESCO, 2008). This thesis examined the literature surrounding K-12 environmental education; indicated barriers to implementing outdoor activities in existing curricula; and showed the impact of incorporating outdoor education experiences into a 6th grade watershed curriculum. A recently implemented watershed education program in Prince William County, Virginia, provided context to examine a collaborative development process and describe and test a methodology to determine teacher and student improvement in watershed knowledge. By analyzing teacher workshop questionnaires and pre- and postexperience student surveys, this thesis evaluated the first year of a recently implemented 6th grade watershed education program in Prince William County, Virginia, to determine students' watershed knowledge. This evaluation indicates that a teacher workshop improves teachers' confidence and intentions in teaching about watersheds and the OEE improves students' knowledge of watersheds, familiarity with watershed issues, and ability to accurately assess the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research the role of the conservation education program, Trout in the Classroom (TIC), in nurturing environmental literacy. The Virginia TIC program has greatly expanded in the last 10 years; it is now conducted within 230 schools in the state (The Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited, n.d.). While the TIC program has been growing in Virginia, so have efforts to improve environmental literacy. In 2015, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe established the first ever Environmental Literacy Challenge with the vision of Virginia students graduating from high school “with the knowledge and skills to make informed environmental decisions” (Commonwealth of Virginia Executive Order 42, 2015, p. 2). The TIC program may provide one possible pathway for achieving this vision. This study used the nationally validated Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey to determine if a relationship exists between the conservation education program, Trout in the Classroom, and environmental literacy among Virginia middle school students, grades 6 and 7. The TIC participant results were compared to the National Environmental Literacy Assessment Project, Year 1, National Baseline Study for Middle Grades Students. Although both the 6th and 7th grade TIC participants had higher means in some environmental literacy sub-domains, only the 7th grade ecological foundations sub-domain was found to be statistically significant favoring the TIC participants.--Abstract

Book excerpt: This study considers the need to better understand environmental education's contribution to fostering environmental literacy of young students. In the coming years, students will be called upon to understand complex environmental issues and make informed decisions in their private and public lives. All this comes at a time when young people are less connected to the natural world (Mertz, 2010). This study used the Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey to explore the environmental literacy level of 6th grade students at an environmental charter school. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of environmental charter school participation on the environmental literacy levels of 6th grade students.

Producing a citizenry that can understand and address the complex environmental issues facing the world today and in the future is essential to sustainable life on this planet. Using the Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey, 6th grade students across Arkansas were surveyed to obtain a baseline measure of environmental literacy based on the four domains of environmental literacy included in the survey; ecological knowledge, environmental affect, cognitive skills, and behavior. Individual domain scores were combined into a composite environmental literacy score. Results were then compared to the national baseline established by the National Environmental Literacy Assessment Project. The research population consisted of a stratified random sample of 6th grade students across Arkansas. An ex post facto research design was used to analyze the sample. The results of the research indicated that the Arkansas 6th grade students scored in the moderate range for the domains of ecological knowledge, environmental affect, and behavior. However, scores for cognitive skills were in the low range. The mean composite environmental literacy score indicated the 6th grade students had a moderate level of environmental literacy overall. Students in Arkansas scored significantly lower (t (4110) = 15.41, p =
