Book excerpt: This book brings together recent research on interpersonal relationships in education from a variety of perspectives including research from Europe, North America and Australia. The work clearly demonstrates that positive teacher-student relationships can contribute to student learning in classrooms of various types. Productive learning environments are characterized by supportive and warm interactions throughout the class: teacher-student and student-student. Similarly, at the school level, teacher learning thrives when there are positive and mentoring interrelationships among professional colleagues. Work on this book began with a series of formative presentations at the second International Conference on Interpersonal Relationships in Education (ICIRE 2012) held in Vancouver, Canada, an event that included among others, keynote addresses by David Berliner, Andrew Martin and Mieke Brekelmans. Further collaboration and peer review by the editorial team resulted in the collection of original research that this book comprises. The volume (while eclectic) demonstrates how constructive learning environment relationships can be developed and sustained in a variety of settings. Chapter contributions come from a range of fields including educational and social psychology, teacher and school effectiveness research, communication and language studies, and a variety of related fields. Together, they cover the important influence of the relationships of teachers with individual students, relationships among peers, and the relationships between teachers and their professional colleagues.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on current working relationships between high school principals and counselors. The study represents a case of three high schools in one district in Southern California. Nine counselors and three principals were interviewed with regard to their role, the role of the counselor as perceived by their principals, the counselor/principal working relationship in each school and the counselor's job satisfaction. Findings in key areas reveal less than total counselor and principal collaboration and less than total job satisfaction by the counselor. Principal and counselor working relationships are very limited as admitted by both groups of participants. Although counselors reported being happy in their chosen professions, they expressed wanting more contact with their principals. The majority of counselors also stated that their principals did not have a clear understanding of their role as counselors on the school's campus. As a result of this study. school principals may want to consider developing methods in which stronger connectivity can be established with all members of the counseling departments. The study demonstrates the need to improve collaboration, communication and working relationships between these professionals.

Book excerpt: There are few studies that examine the area of collaborative leadership through the viewpoints of counselors, assistant principals, and campus principals as members of the high school campus leadership team. These relationships have become increasingly important with the influence of state testing accountability and the pressures to improve student achievement. Through a distributive leadership lens, the perceptions of the relationships among the campus principal, assistant principals, and counselors were examined to better understand how each of these individuals contributed to the campus leadership team. This qualitative single case study of the leadership team at a large comprehensive high school in Texas provided necessary research on organizational relationships at the high school level that could be strengthened to significantly improve student outcomes. Two focus groups interviews and an individual interview were conducted to obtain the data needed to adequately explore the nature of the relationships. Key findings of this study have indicated that successful relationships among high school counselors, assistant principals, and campus principals must involve focused collaboration, knowledge of roles and responsibilities, communication, shared vision, mutual respect, and the distributed leadership mindset. The perceptions of the principal, assistant principals, and the counselors shape the role of the counselor on the leadership team and influence the collaboration among these professionals.

Book excerpt: To anyone who wishes to work in educational administration, having a clear understanding of how one perceives others, how one is perceived, and how one interprets what one perceives is a great advantage in relating to many different kinds of people (Owens, 1995, p. 40). Schoonover (1988, p. vi) stated, "Interpersonal skills are the basis for all management practices. They represent the foundation for productive work and employee satisfaction." The degree to which school principals possess interpersonal skills could be pivotal in the creation of a school climate conducive to student success. Unfortunately, research findings are very limited in clarifying high school principals' interpersonal skills. Thus, the research is vital in the investigation of the perceived relationship between principals' interpersonal sensitivity and the perceptions of the campus improvement teams of the principals' interpersonal sensitivity. Research is needed to add to the theoretical and practical dimens-ions of the principal's interpersonal skills. This study utilized a blend of descriptive research methods and naturalistic inquiry to gain insight into the differences between the principal's perception of his own interpersonal sensitivity and the perceptions of his campus team members. An important implication of the study was that awareness of the differences in perception between the principal and the campus team members is an important step in the development of interpersonal skills for the principal. The findings of the survey instrument showed that there were differences in the self-assessments of the principals and their respective campus teams' assessment of their interpersonal sensitivity. Among the differences was overall, the male principals tended to rate themselves higher on the instrument than did their campus teams and the female principals tended to be rate themselves lower than did their campus teams. The ability to perceive the needs of others and affect their behavior is essential in leadership. Being aware of the skills of interpersonal sensitivity is the first step to putting into practice the theories of management, motivation, and decision making.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study analyzed the perceptions of public school principals and assistant principals regarding the appropriateness of school counselor duty assignments. Perceptions of the participants were compared to the recommendations published in 2005 by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) in its National Model. Further comparisons were made between the perceptions of elementary and secondary administrators. Participants (N=91) represented 15 of the 16 school districts in one south central county in Pennsylvania. A survey was used to collect data as well as subsequent interviews with 12 randomly-selected participants. Results indicated that although most participants rated themselves as only slightly familiar with the ASCA National Model, their perceptions regarding which counselor duties were important and which were not important matched the recommendations in the model. The duty ranked most differently by elementary and secondary principals was the delivery of classroom guidance lessons, which the elementary principals felt was much more important than the secondary principals. Although some non-counseling duty assignments were discovered during the data collection process, results indicated a very favorable outlook for school counselors who wish to comply with the ASCA National Model and implement an effective comprehensive guidance program for their school.

Book excerpt: Despite the development of the American School Counseling Association's National Standards for school counseling programs, the school counseling profession continues to struggle with role ambiguity and role conflict. In an effort to gain additional information regarding the school counselors' role, this study employed a research survey design to examine the principals' and counselors' perceptions of the school counselors' role and to investigate the similarities and differences between those perceptions. A purposeful sample of 141 public school principals and 149 counselors from elementary and secondary schools located within Region 4 in southeast Texas were solicited to complete a modified version of the School Counselor Activity Rating Scale (SCARS) (Scarborough, 2005). The researcher analyzed the data obtained from the SCARS by calculating frequency distributions and percentages for each statement of the SCARS to determine which activities were perceived by principals and counselors as most and least important. The findings of this study indicate the majority of principals and counselors have similar perceptions on 35 of the activities and differing perceptions on 15 of the activities measured on the SCARS.
