The title of this part is, "An essay concerning important physical features exhibited in the valley of the Minnesota River, and upon their signification." The conclusion is that these features are a part of extended physical phenomena on this continent, which are of much Practical importance to engineers, and possessed of special scientific interest. The object of this distribution is to submit the matter to the consideration of scientific men, so that the truth of the conclusions may be tested. Respectfully submitted to the honorable the Secretary of War, and recommended that the report and maps be printed for distribution as requested.
