Book Synopsis Scientists as Entrepreneurs by : Karel J. Samsom
Download or read book Scientists as Entrepreneurs written by Karel J. Samsom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When you are doing something that is a brand new adventure, breaking new ground, whether it is something like a techno logical breakthrough or simply a way of living that is not what the community can help you with, there is always the danger of too much enthusiasm, of neglecting certain mechan ical details. Then you fall off. 'A danger path this is. ' When you follow the path of your desire and enthusiasm and emotion, keep your mind in control, and don't let it pull you compulsively into disaster. " Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth Through ten years of working with and observing scientists in the bio medical fields, I have found Joseph Campbell's words to be especially applicable to the scientist who decides to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. Joseph Campbell was not a student of entrepreneurship. His scholarship was contained in a series of comprehensive studies of mythology, the captivating stories of mankind's search over the ages for truth, meaning and significance. Still, his advice here contains many of the essential ingredients of successful science-based venturing: the charting of new ground socially, technological breakthroughs, enthusiasm and emotion balanced by careful reasoning, and finally, awareness of the danger of neglecting details. Coming from such a different philosophical and occupational culture into entrepreneurship and business, the scientist faces extraordinary challenges although the rewards of putting together a successful company can be equally satisfying.

Book Synopsis Demystifying Venture Capital by : Mohammad Mustafa
Download or read book Demystifying Venture Capital written by Mohammad Mustafa and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venture Capital is a marriage between 'people with money and no ideas' and 'people with ideas and no money'. It is a high-risk investment vehicle with the potential for manifold returns and the possibility of a complete investment written-off. Although it is essentially private money and smaller in size than traditional financing pillars, its impact has been phenomenal, even to the extent of transforming the way we live in the modern world. Yet the fact remains that the business of venture capital is not fully understood by startup founders and fund managers are also not familiar with the inner workings of other venture funds. And, as more public or tax-players’ money flows into this asset class, it begs a shift from the existing esoteric styles to more transparent and predictable operations. It would also be beneficial if the craft of venture capital is well understood by the business community and most importantly, policymakers as Demystifying Venture Capital: How it works and How to get primarily written to address these concerns, and to explain the subject in a nontechnical manner, as far as possible. A handbook for fund managers, startups, academicians interested in the subject, policy makers, and aspiring entrepreneurs, this book is unique as it has been written along with the top 25 venture funds in India as co-authors. The first part builds the concepts and theoretical framework of venture investing throughout the venture capital life cycle, giving readers a robust academic backdrop while the second part offer 25 first-hand accounts of how VCs invest, where they invest, what they look for while investing, providing invaluable insights into the minds and methods of VCs. All in all, this prototype is a first-of-its-kind endeavour to deliver a 360-degree + view of the Venture Capital universe.

Book Synopsis The Entrepreneurial State by : Mariana Mazzucato
Download or read book The Entrepreneurial State written by Mariana Mazzucato and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning economist Mariana Mazzucato’s famously incisive international bestseller debunking the pervasive myth of the inept state versus an innovative private sector—with a new preface by the author According to conventional wisdom, innovation is best left to the bold entrepreneurs of the private sector, and government should get out of the way. But what if that wasn't case? What if, from the inventions of Silicon Valley to medical breakthroughs, the public sector has actually been the most courageous and valuable risk-taker of all? Critically acclaimed and influential thinker and scholar Mariana Mazzucato argues comprehensively against the myth of a lumbering, bureaucratic state versus a dynamic, innovative private sector with remarkable original and deep research. In a series of case studies—from nanotechnology to the emerging green tech of today—Mazzucato reveals that the opposite is true: the private sector only finds the courage to invest after an entrepreneurial state has made the high-risk investments. The Entrepreneurial State reveals how every technology that makes the iPhone so “smart” was actually funded by the government—from the Internet and GPS technology, to touch-screen displays and voice-activated Siri. In the history of modern capitalism, the State has not only fixed market failures, but has also actively shaped and created markets. In doing so, it sometimes wins and sometimes fails. Yet by not admitting the State’s role in active risk taking, we've created an "innovation system" where the public sector socializes risks while privatizing reward, as Mazzucato controversially argues. This bold and provocative book considers how we adopted this dysfunctional dynamic, and then how we can overcome it so that economic growth can be not only "smart" but "inclusive" as well.
Book Synopsis The Entrepreneur's Freedom Journal by : Nate Goodman
Download or read book The Entrepreneur's Freedom Journal written by Nate Goodman and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Entrepreneur's Freedom Journal is a must for any entrepreneur. Plan your day, complete your goals and get your life as an entrepreneur moving. This journal was written by an entrepreneur, for entrepreneurs. It is purposely printed in a small, thin form, making it easier to throw in your laptop bag and carry with you. It's meant to be a 30-day plan for you to journal your way through one single month. The Why: As an entrepreneur, you need to journal. Journaling is important because it helps you reconnnect with your core self. All of us spend too much time inundated with the chaos of our daily lives: we're overworked at our jobs, email keeps coming in, and there's the constant barrage of the news and social media. It's all just too much. If you can't get quiet with your own thoughts, then who are you? Journaling helps you settle down from all the noise. When you journal, you'll write down your goals, your plans for today and the next month, and your insights into your life. By writing these things down, you clarify and focus the things that matter to you. So don't just have a goal in your mind like, "I'm going to write a book." Put it down on paper, and write each day about what you are going to do that day toward your goal. It's far more powerful. And it actually strengthens your belief in your dreams. The When: Journal in the morning, before the day gets started. The reason you do this is because, by starting in the morning, you're focusing your day on the important, not the urgent. If you don't set your day up this way, you'll end up doing the same thing you've always done--reacting to events as they pop up. Do you want to get out of "survival mode?" Then journal daily. The "Daily Progress" chart is meant for you to check off items each day that you accomplish. Mediation- if you've never tried it, don't scoff. It's been around for thousands of years for a reason. Meditating daily will settle your mind and you'll feel so relaxed after each session. Affirmations- again, if you've never spoken affirmations to yourself, don't scoff. People who have emerged from the rut of "survival mode" have done so through affirming things to themselves. There is blank space for you to write down other topics of importance to you. Daily pages: In the daily pages, each day, write down your goal such as "Finish first draft of my novel." Give yourself a time limit to accomplish this goal and fill that in. Then use the Action Plan to write down the things you'll do today toward that goal. There is significant space for your daily journaling and space for you to record your wordcount for the day. You'll be surprised when you've finished the month to go back and look through how much you've accomplished. Before long, you'll have achieved your goal!
