Book excerpt: Under the 1737 Licensing Act, Covent Garden, Dury Lane and regional Theatres Royal held a monopoly on the dramatic canon. This work explores the presentation of foreign cultures and ethnicities on the popular British stage from 1750 to 1840. It argues that this illegitimate stage was the site for a plebeian Enlightenment.

Download or read book The Image of Algeria in Anglo-American Writings, 1785-1962 written by Osman Benchérif and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the way in which British and American visitors experienced Algeria and about their imaginary responses to the country. It also attempts to trace the elaboration and evolution of the perception of Algeria in the West with particular focus on the impressions and representations of those Anglo-Americans who experienced Algeria at first hand and wrote about it. The book provides historical perspective from the 16th century to the turn of the 19th century, but more specifically from 1785, which opened the chapter of the young American Republic clashes with the Regency of Algiers, to the last years of the Algerian War of Independence in 1962. It provides for the first time a corpus of literary texts that offer a basic anthology of Anglo-American writings on Algeria. In that sense, some valuable documents that had fallen into oblivion have been retrieved, throwing some illuminating light on the common and often forgotten cultural connections between Algeria and the Anglo-American world over four centuries.

Book Synopsis Terrorism and Literature by : Peter C. Herman
Download or read book Terrorism and Literature written by Peter C. Herman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 1052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorism has long been a major shaping force in the world. However, the meanings of terrorism, as a word and as a set of actions, are intensely contested. This volume explores how literature has dealt with terrorism from the Renaissance to today, inviting the reader to make connections between older instances of terrorism and contemporary ones, and to see how the various literary treatments of terrorism draw on each other. The essays demonstrate that the debates around terrorism only give the fictive imagination more room, and that fiction has a great deal to offer in terms of both understanding terrorism and our responses to it. Written by historians and literary critics, the essays provide essential knowledge to understand terrorism in its full complexity. As befitting a global problem, this book brings together a truly international group of scholars, with representatives from America, Scotland, Canada, New Zealand, Italy, Israel, and other countries.
